European Socialists promised on Thursday to work to rebuild Europe's strategic alliance with the United States now that the Democrats control Congress after last month's elections.
Socialist leaders attending a meeting of the European Socialist Party pledged that with the Democrats on the rise, strong ties could be renewed with the United States after years of cool relations with Republican President George W. Bush.
Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.
"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America," former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the European Socialist Party, said in remarks directed at Dean.
The Democrats gained control of both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994 in the mid-term elections, reshaping the political landscape ahead of the 2008 presidential race.
"Europe needs an America that is back on track," said Portuguese Socialist Prime Minister Jose Socrates, whose country is hosting the meeting.
"We need, today more than ever, to reinforce and renew the strategic alliance between the United States and Europe," Socrates said. "We know that a stronger Democratic Party is key for this to happen."
Socialists, or centre-left governments, currently hold or share power in just over half of Europe.
Many European governments, not just Socialist ones, have above all been angered by Bush's war in Iraq and what has been seen as the U.S. failure to work with allies in international affairs.
They expressed hopes after last month's election for a new era of open dialogue on a more equal footing with Washington and the Bush administration during the final two years of his presidency.
Socrates said Dean's Democrats "should know that they can count on European Socialists" for support.

Great idea, Dean: associate your party with groups that have crippled their own countries' growth with high-taxes, bloated bureaucracy, and inefficient and wasteful policies.
And I love the reaction of these Europeans; they have no idea that the election was more of a slap at Republican lethargy and corrupt Congressmen than any endorsement of Dean and his cohorts.

Anyway, over the last couple of years, I've gotten quite comfortable with going it alone. The European Socialists should take their own car if they insist on tagging along.

Ronald Reagan's America.Give me a break. If you think that the US government and military has only used torture under the Bush administration, you're quite hilariously naive. The only difference in interrogation methods under Bush is that they haven't kept it quiet and under wraps.

Its the 'Red Rose' coalition. Britians Labor and France's Socialist are a part of it.
European Socialists are considered the equivilant to the Democratic Party. (sorta Center Left.)
Keep in mind that European nations operate within a parlamentary form of government. Meaning that the party or a coalition of parties that wins the majority of seats, governs the country. If the United States were a parlamentary system, the president would be a figurehead and the Speaker of the House would be the Prime Minister.
This is why political party affiliation are stronger in Europe.

Finally a reply that makes some sense. It is amusing to see the hatred towards European moderate socialist parties while at the same time Bush's US and socialist-led Blair's GB are the best of friends (and Blair being a member of the PES).
Even here in Finland the party (SDP) that is a member of PES can quite comfortably form a government with a right wing party (and it's been like that as long as I can remember..there are 1 big socialist and 1 right-wing party in government and things still get done). Hell, it's hard to tell the difference between today's "socialist" parties and centre right parties.
All in all, it seems that socialist has a bit different meaning in US than it has in Europe.

In the latest election, the Democrats won Congress thanks to the 'Blue Dog' (Conservative Democrats) canidates. I doubt that the European Socialist will be given a big bear hug.
Socialism is viewed as a radical political leftist movement in the US. Perhaps the European Socialist should consider re-branding thier political product before approaching DC.

WHAT? There is no such thing as a conservative Democrat. The closest thing to that is Joe Liberman and the only thing he's conservative on is the war on terror. He's a liberal socialist on everything else.
Republicans did not lose because of the mythical "Conservative Democrats".
Replublicans and George Bush lost the congressional elections because they turned their backs on real conservatives.
They thought that if they carried themselves on a conservative platform, they would win the election and they did for the first three elections, but on this last one, conservatives were really pissed off about the way republicans abandoned them after the conservatives elected them and started pandering to the left.
Dubai Ports (porks) deal, Illegal Immigration, fighting the Iraq war "PC" style, social security, bumbling around like a dufus and ultimatly being duped like a dufus by the media and the left after hurricane katrina.
The Dubai Ports deal is the one that really, really pissed off alot of people including me. The fact that he had the nuts to say after opposition had built momentum, that he would veto any proposal to stop a pork deal like that from going through.
WTF!
M*therF*cker! You won't veto any of your goddamn spending bills that are plunging America more into debt, but you will veto this.

I don't care what was said in Venezuela, that was the case here.
I didn't vote a completely straight ticket, I voted for a Dem for attorney general and the only reason was because he got an A- against a C where gun rights are concerned.
Dewine got an F against D-, so guess what Dewine was out, I really think gun owners votes count over here and they don't take kindly to those that were put in office messign with their firearms.
Allot of the Republicans have upset the voters, they stood for one thing when they were voted in, but lied to us, they ended up being RINOs, so they either didn't get put back in office due to people not voting for them or people voting against them in protest.

And to add to the big sh!t sandwich was Jim Leach campaigning in DC. Rude awakening for him. Lemonade time. I still have Indian casinos and the lottery.

Nixon was President of the United States. When he met with the North Vietnamese enemy it was to form some agreement on finding peace.
Kerry went to Paris as a war protester and as someone who seeked to undermine the effort. He met with the Viet Cong and then campaigned for their terms in the United States.
