Sure does look like a plate carrier of some description, and an M4 with an optic.
He probably got it from his day job in the Iraqi security forces.

Didn't think about that.....Maybe one of the Iraqi Army solders that got trained and left.
but that's just speculation on my part.

Good speculation, but I've yet to see an Iraqi soldier carry an M4; I usually see them - through photographs - with AK-47/72, etc... So I doubt the fact they're trained with them and are consequently issued them

From what I've seen the only Iraqi solders that are issued M4's are the special forces and commandos.....And no I'm not saying he's either one, I'm just commenting on what I've seen.

Iraqi SOF's use the M4, but your right, it's not a low level grunts weapon.

Just wild speculation on my part, as I read in various sources that state how some of those employed in Iraq's security services are sometimes also insurgents by night.

My first thoughts after seeing this picture was that he is a hired mercenary(from SA or Iran Syria etc.)...but why would insurgents hire a mercenary when they have the manpower in surrounding cities...? Reminds me of the incident were a place was held up by mysterious gunmen who wore ski masks and were "professional" in Iraq....but as far as i know that story was just heresay. Again, who knows....

Most probably they were just issued a few rounds like five or ten, so they dont have the means to stage a coup on their own.

The weapon was probably captured from a dead soldier or contractor. The gear could have been purchased pretty much anywhere by someone with money. While most of the guys in the parachute pants and man dresses are poor, not all of them are.

When you see these boys up close, the rifles are the least of your worries. some of them can be pretty mean when fired up. and staging a coup around civillians, having no mags in place means no UD's or civvies accidentaly shot.
Btw, what sort of rifles are they?
