Bush Signals Support for U.N. Iraq Plan (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=544&ncid=716&e=1&u=/ap/20040416/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_britain)
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) signaled support Friday for an interim government to take power in Iraq (news - web sites) on June 30, saying the plan under development by a U.N. envoy is "broadly acceptable to the Iraqi people."
The authority of the coalition backed by the United States will expire on the June 30 deadline previously set, Bush said at a news conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites), adding that "coalition forces will remain in Iraq to help the new government succeed."
Turning his attention to a second contentious foreign policy issue, the president called on Palestinian leaders to "rise to the challenge" of accepting permanent Israeli possession of certain portions of the West Bank seized in the 1967 Mideast war.
"It gives all sides a chance to reinvigorate" the peace process, said Bush, who signed off earlier this week on a fundamental shift in American policy in response to a request from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites).
Bush made his comments at a news conference in the sun-splashed White House Rose Garden, standing shoulder by shoulder once more with Blair, his principal ally in the effort to topple Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and restore democracy in Iraq.
"It was never going to be easy and it isn't now" in Iraq, said Blair, who echoed Bush's comments and also his resolve.
"We will not waver in the face of fear and intimidation," said the president.

of course he wants the United Nations in NOW ... and without giving them real power. he wants to use the UN at his will and/or to later blame them if everything goes wrong in Iraq.
it'll be interesting to see if the UN gets REAL political power in Iraq. Or if they just have to oversee, speak: give legitimation to, occupation plans ...

'Real power' by the UN over Iraqis or over the US?
Would that include 'power' over the distribution of United States Taxpayer funding of reconstruction efforts, or security forces or 'power' to enact UN financed efforts.
If it's over security issues then the UN has the 'power' to provide it's own security forces. If it's over input into the composition of Iraq's political future, then they have already gained 'power' though Coalition Consent.
By having previously announced a June 30th date for transfer of sovereignty back to the Iraqis, 'power' is beeing relinquished to the Iraqis themselves through self-governance.
So where does UN 'Power' come into play, Soulhunter?

I saw the conference with Blair and Bush. I was very impressed by both their comments and answers.

You are an idiot :cantbeli:
It's people like you I don't even try to convince. If the US goes it alone...they're conducting an illegal war. If they let the UN in on the security and fiscal part (they already let them in the political process) then they are manipulating the UN. We're f*cked either way huh?
The reason the UN refused to send security forces in already is that the US insisted that they would operate under US command, not UN command. After June 30, ALL forces in the country would be under Iraqi control.

Well, technically speaking they should be. The Iraqi government is going to take control of the country instead of the US. While I have no doubt that the US will carry significant weight in the country for a while, the final decision, say, for the Army to go into Najaf would be in the hands of Iraqis.

There is not "technical" control. There is just CONTROL. If you have an entire foreign army overseeing what you are doing, you donīt control anything.

June 30 is the date to have an interum government in place.
I believe they will slap one together quickly to show progress, this is going to clearly be a puppet government with limited power.
it is however a step in the right direction, the ultimate goal of having Iraq soverign (apart from that large US Military base they want  , but that's just a base.)

The only thing the U.N. has ever done successfully is conducting and supervising elections, The provisional Constitution that spells out the legal path to give sovereignty back to the Iraqi's was subject to US oversight and is now in place. All the U.N. will do is negotiate the implementation of it, as the final Constitution is ratified and national elections are held.
The U.N. will not control the policy, they will simply give their stamp of approval and oversee the elections. Read the provisional Constitution that CPA ratified 60 days ago, it's all part of the plan set forth and is on schedule
