That is true.

That reminds me of an excercise that was held in our school a few years back. Reservists actually marched in with their gear and rifles, established a command point in the auditorium and set guards and sentries around the school. It was pretty confusing and I still remember the look on the parent's faces who brought their kids to school and met a couple MP's at the parking lot :)

yep, the weather wasn't very cool. I were 4 days in the combat phase of hukka06 and I have never been so wet for such a long time. Anyways, the exercise was kinda fun. Didn't see any enemies although i was a reconnaissance teamleader:).

good stuff, when we intergrate with the EUBG soon, we'll be going to train in Finland and Swedenwoot, because of the silly legilation against non-Irish raised militaries operting on Irish soil:roll:

btw off topic, but is there any news on that new Finnish SOF's unit you were raising?...I think it was originally called "KOVA" or something.

The KOVA has been around for a while already, first it was designed to be following 1 year training for the paratroop-trained reservists after their conscript service. But after the beginning of 2005 it changed, that you may apply to it, if you just pass the tests, no matter are you a reservist of any branch (cpl or higher rank needed though), conscript or professional personel.

Yeah, it seems that after the 14 month training you have few options:
You can sign a 5 year contract to be a "SpecialJaeger NCO." But no further info on that. Maybe somekind of a readiness force on domestic matters. Other options:
Apply for regular officer training at FDF militaryschools.
Apply for international peacekeeping missions.
Or just go back to reserve, but with changed branch to "SpecialJaeger" and if needed participate to normal refreshner exercises, but as a specialjaeger.

one guy forgot to bring the proper helmet.... that would be a one time mistake in real war.....

It's because security reasons, I quess

Few years ago one motorbikerunner(don't know if that is the right term) somehow managed to get himself in the target area. He was wearing a black helmet and at the same time there was a ongoing live fire exercise.

Unfortunately, the targets were black balloons, runner was hit in the head and died.

Yes it is. Colors might look a bit different but that's just because of the moisture.

The Finns seem to really love the rubber. Do the Finns not have Goretex? I was just wondering because I actually prefer rubber suits like Helly Hansen over Goretex, but most forces have gone to Goretex. Rubber won't leak and I don't find gore all that breatheable. Those Finnish suits look really good.
Oh, and what low temperature can those winter rubber boots be used for and still feel comfortable?

It's propably mostly a question of money. Rubber jackets and trousers go into incredibly small space so they can be put into the equipment belt when there is no need for them.

I had no problems with the winter boots even in the coldest weathers (-30c) as long as I managed to keep the extra felt socks that we use with them dry. They are very warm.

I mean these:

Seems they have hearing protectors. One time when we were at one of these exercises I was a mg gunner, I had fogotten to take my ear protection with me. Those small yellow things which you stuff to your ears. Then when the "enemy" attacked I fired continously for a few minutes. I have to tell you, my ears really hurted after for a while...

I believe it's the shrapnel vest (sirpaleliivi). I think there are 3 types of M05 vests:

-Ballistic vest (greyish non modular)
-Equipment vest (green vest with MOLLE, two variants, can be used on top of ballistic vest)
-Shrapnel vest (camo vest with MOLLE and crotch plate)

M91 vests (not sure about these):

-Shrapnel vest
-Ballistic vest (MPs use these)
-Coastal jaeger vest (sniper in one of the photos seems to have this)
-Peacekeeper vest (look for Afganistan photos in mil.fi)

Paratrooper have their own vest too (Savotta?)

Winter rubber boots is just about the only thing that works in extreme temperatures (-45 C and below).

Jörn-kängan and boots with similar designs are alternatives though.

And rubber boots generally are the best thing after pre-cut bread up here, when it's cold and wet and damp and so on...

The forests can be wet even in the middle of summer, and wet feet equals cold and less than optimal fighters. In the winter they equal useless fighters.

Hooray for the rubber boots! Dumb looking in someone's opinion but oh soo warm and dry.

Oh, you mean those. Those are just a new model for bullet proof vests. We had those in Kosovo also. Goes side by side with the older ones which had only two magazine pouches similar to shrapnel vest.

I drive an antique M113 120mm Mortar Carrier in the Swiss Army, I would kill to drive the AMOS :)
A fire mission can be done within a fracture of the time and twice as effective as we need to lob some 120mm rounds towards the target...

I wouldn't say that the AMV is a bad choice either for AMOS.

Interwievs are all about just some general stuff about AMOS and the ongoing project with it.

Now there's a great, relatively simple and lowtech APC/artillery-tractor/field-ambulance/engineer-platform/FO-vehicle/etc.

I served on one of these (and that's a very lightly camourflaged one, the camo we did looked like a moving bush) and they were excellent in difficult terrain and snow.

Yep it's good to see that there's still use for older gear. Didn't Sweden make their MTLBs into mortar carries? It would be nice to see Finland doing the same too.

Finland uses the MTLBv variant which has wider tracks thus making it perform well in harsh terrain :).

I also found this (http://www.edu.lahti.fi/%7Earoinila/leo/mt-lbv.wmv) short video of MTLBs PKT in action p-).

Cutting up the roof and inserting a 360-rotating mortar would be an easy job. Currently they are mostly used pulling around heavy mortars. It's extremely unlikely that they will be seeing any conversions anymore since they are being phased out at the moment just like all of the Armored Brigades.
But it's still a very robust, easily modified and popular platform even among the Russians. And I believe it's still in production since Rosoboronexport is advertising it for export.

I think Sweden bought some 800 MTLB“s in the mid 90-s, modified them and scrapped them all just a few years later. Now that“s how you put the taxpayers money into good use :(

Little unexpectedly FDF launched a website about Reserve officer schools' live fire exercise. So here's some photos about it. All from mil.fi.

My friend just finished a tour with the FDF. He said that he was never so cold, wet, tired and hungry before in his life. He said that he was very glad to be finished with it.

Excellent photos, too bad this winter hasn“t been a winter at all so far....

I went to see my little brother last sunday. He had just started his service in Pori Brigade at the beginning of this month. I was appalled to hear that they had not even been given skis yet. So what if there“s no snow?
