View Full Version : Polish Secret Police Broke into Finnish Embassy!

In 1970's SB (Polish Secret Police) broke into Finnish Embassy in Warsov. The order to do that was given by the KGB. The KGB was suspecting Finnish military attachč for spying. The SB photographed atleast thousands of papers belonging to the Finnish Military Intelligence. It was confirmed to Polish (and Russians) that FMI had wery close ties to the western intelligence services.
The investigation has started in Finland. Let's see what happens.
I red this from Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.
Sorry, it's in Finnish. http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/tuoreet/artikkeli/1076152485767

Nothing strange or bad in it? Yes it is normal intelligence game (goddamn you Polish jamesbonds!). Defending Poland seems to be much more difficult than defending Finland, according to history. Our geopolitical situation is pretty much the same as Poland. It's no wonder that you joined the NATO and EU. I hope we Finns would do the same with NATO.
Stratecigally more important? Wake up, man. The second biggest city of Russia is just next to Finland!

Touche, my good man, Touche.
The times are different now. We could not do **** if Russia tries to invade us with it's full military power.
I bet I'm going to anger the Russians here if I say that Russia does not pose a threat to us with it's current military power. However I'm not going to say it.
In my opinion, what the FDF needs is more funding in order to get modern weapons and in that order demonstrate that it has the power to effectively counter an enemy attacking it's soil.
If we would have top of the line weapons (or even similar equipment as Sweden) many invaders would surely think twice about attacking us.
We do not need to be allied with NATO in order to acquire modern weapons. Instead, I'd say that we should try to learn from the Swedish when it comes to acquiring/designing equipment.

BTW it's amusing how the things that happened 25 yrs ago can move some people. It's interesting how the Finnish intel figured out after this time that their embassy was raided? From Polish press... or they've just found during the cleaning a visit card left by operators 25 yrs ago saying "hallo we've been there".

fdt According to the article Finnish TV has spent some time digging in
the Polish archives. The Finnish authorities got to know it because of the reporters.
Obviously the Polish agents did a good job and didnīt leave any traces after
them. Personally I donīt see this as any big deal, because Iīm quite sure that
the Polish embassies around the world have got some unwelcome visits as well.
mack pl: If I was a Pole I would be embarassed rather, you were KGBīs
biatches, the article clearly says that it was done by order from Moscow,
Polish "intelligence" during the cold war probably didnīt do **** without getting
orders from there first.
Further I can say (based on what is written in the article) that it was done because
Soviet suspected that a Finnish military attache in the embassy, lieutenant colonel
Jouku Lintunen could be a spy. They couldnīt prove this, but of some of the documents
Moscow could see that the Finns was co-operating closely with some western
intelligence agencies. It could be noted here that the Finns also worked with
in example Soviet Union. So this is no news really, as being in the middle politically
Finland was used by both west and east and Finland used this. So Iīd say that
Moscow hardly learnt something of value, that they didnīt know already before,
maybe they just got it confirmed.
Further there is an other incident noted in the article. Finlands attache to Mexico
today, Ilkka Heiskanen was a diplomat in Poland in 1974. Once he forgot a bag
in a hotel in Poland, after a while he figured it out and returned to the hotel
and picked it up... but then Polish agents already had made wax copies of all the
keys in the bag :cantbeli: Aaaah cold war. Interesting times.

Don't You have a slight feeling that this time You've gone too far? haven't You noticed that we got rid of the commie system and russian domination 15 yrs ago...? Believe me it was not because the SB murderers have raided a Finnish embassy (regardless of we like Finns as people and Finland as a country) ... It was because all this system was imposed to us by external force (where our allies left us alone with Stalin after 1945) and caused many victims amongst Poles. Calling Poles in extenso KGB bitch*es is like spitting in the faces of millions of people who were forced to live in system that was inhuman, brutal and rejected by vast majority of people living here. Congratulations, it was very moving act of historical consciousness. maybe we shall discuss here some Hitler's bitc*hes who were selling him an iron crude and weapons (example? A Polish coastal Bofors battery damaged by Poles in 1939 was then repaired by germans with spare parts delivered by whom?) during the war?
We care because now we (the Finnish public) can determine who was our friend and who wasn't. We care because it gives us tools to understand the world and different political situations in it. We care it because history usually repeats itself.

Doesn't look like a flamewar to me.. Poles are taking accuses nicely, well done.
I have a different approach to this all together. I'd like to congratulate Polish spies for job well done. Maybe you can teach us a few tricks too in turn?
Anyway, back in 70s it was a bit different. I wouldn't say Poles were servants of KGB even if they did something they demanded. If this is true, KGB did have valid points. If they suspected our man to be a spy, hell of course they want to investigate it. Since it the target was in Poland, it would be bad to send own spies there if they get caught. Furthermore, asking Polish secret service to help was the right thing to do and shows good will and trust between each others institutions of the fine art of spying. Why not? That's how it's done and from technical point of view, it was excellent, yes?
I actually visited spy museum here in Finland couple summers back. We have had spies all over the world too and still do. To assume anything else would be naive. Maybe the activity is not near as high as with some other countries but hey we can't blame others. Sending spies is not stupid. Stupid is to be caught. Sending spies is not really a sign of distrust.. just the way things are done.
What I think is VERY important for us Finns to realize right now, is that if KGB really wanted to have information, they could have just asked one of our politicians who would have been competing who gets to help first, heels snapping together like in WWII movies. That's a fact.
Don't ask why some Polish spies did something in their own country, ask why OUR secret service said they would not investigate our OWN people who are suspected of being spies against Finland. Now that's something the public needs to know, because many of these people are in power positions right now. And anyone who has followed the news and what's happening knows I'm not throwing conspiracy theories on the table. It's been admitted. This is far more important of a question to us, and something that really needs to be investigated and traitors turned in front of the justice. We should be easy on them and maybe just low fines would be fine, but at least investigations should be launched. Wait.. I forgot that killing a person (killing, not murdering) gets old and beyond punishment in 20 years... :cantbeli: :cantbeli:

Guys, guys. Why stir up animosity 30 years afterwards? We all know who the real culprit behind **** like this was. Come on, in the ī70s many Finns were standing in line outside Soviet embassy on Tehtaankatu to spill their guts about this and that confidential matter. It was called politics. Some Finns even volunteered to snitch on Eastern European friends to Stasi and the KGB, including that dirty rat who still sits in the Finnish Parliament. Our dirty laundry is far from done. Undefeated in war, never occupied by Russia, Finland was sold cheap by spineless maggots for political favours. Makes me sick.
So, if you like, we were bitches all around, occupied or not. From Molotov and Zhdanov all the way to Viktor Vladimirov and that despicable slime Juri "Komissarov" Derjabin, Russians did their worst to undermine Finnish sovereignty, sometimes very succesfully. So let's put a sock on the blame game, hmmmkay? The wounds are still fresh and we all know that Poles suffered immeasurably more than Finns under Soviet tyranny.
There is no shame in succumbing to a superior enemy, nor is there any glory in fighting to the last man, woman and child (Adolf tried that). Nations do what they have to do to survive. Entering NATO and EU, I'd say to Poland: well done.
This last paragraph may appear like a flame bait, but it's just a metaphore. Don't take offence.
Calling Sov-Bloc countries the Russians' "bitches" is not far off the mark. Think about it: a strong, ruthless and psychotic street thug (CCCP for the metaphorically challenged) wins a bloody turf war and makes everyone his bitches. He is brutal and unpredictable, so the wise thing to do is to bend over and stfu. But one day the thug wakes up from his drunken stupor with a massive hangover, to find that the bitches have run to the other big guy for protection. Out of money and out of friends, he is still able to scare old ladies and little kids with his nasty grin and his rusty gun.

ikurinturbiini, exactly! Our own base is the messiest on this issue. We must clean it before we can go around the world accusing others, when our own hands are the dirtiest. Don't ask who ****ed Finland over, it was us and no one else.

We have simmiliar situation here with post communist agents. Even we have "new" cases polish military oficer who was spying for USA, was freed and fleed to US only because our agenices didn't wanted troubles. I don't blame USA for spying us, its normal even between allies but spies should be caught and punished .

What I think is VERY important for us Finns to realize right now, is that if KGB really wanted to have information, they could have just asked one of our politicians who would have been competing who gets to help first, heels snapping together like in WWII movies. That's a fact.

Beat me to it. Hate it when that happens. :bash:

Make no mistake, other countries has handed over their files of our own spies, working for DDR and God knows who. I don't think they were hostile, just looking for excitement. Did they give any vital information that would have risked our national security? Maybe not.
However, how difficult is it to run the list of names and check out the ones who are for example in politics right now, or sitting in high places? Might take about 10 minutes. I think, that as a citizen and voter I need this information. I would not vote a person who spied for DDR in the 70s. I would not sentence this person to jail either, but I have the right to know who I'm voting for. I have the right to know who the ones are running this country. Denying this information when it is handed to us for free is insulting. Why wouldn't they investigate it? Do they really know our national security wasn't endangered? I wouldn't be so sure, after all look at this case, they heard it from reporters what happened over 30 years ago!
Besides what harm does it do? The regular Joes and Jills should get a free pass on it, but the ones who run this country and might have this past, they should be looked into. It's like few other politicians who were praising on communism only 10 years ago who have changed their tones now, still politicians and still with the same themes, but they just call it socialism more to left now as for their part.
It's dirty and it stinks. Who runs the service? Interior ministery.... as who is whose bitch, I wouldn't even mention Poles in this thread after this.

fdt, Thanks for the compliments, but I really don't feel like I have accomplished anything here. It's that people often are blind to their own mistakes. Going after other people for what you are the worst in is hypocricy. Finlandization, what really happened after the war.. it's all in the air. Every now and then some investigative writers drops the bomb every few years. It gets few press articles, and secret service either says they will 'look into it' or 'we already know everything there is to it'. I trust our secret service, they are good at what they do. But how about letting us know what happened then? If it's so sensitive it can't be said after decades.. I say it's about the time to spill it out!!
Finlandization.. well I'm tired of blaming the Russians. I would congratulate them if the consequences to our nation weren't so severe. We disrespected our own veterans of war and still we are just waiting for the rest of them to die so we can then say how sorry we are we didn't give them anything back for their effort and sacrifices.. then we can cry our eyes out how we just forgot all about it. It's dirty and I don't like it. All this, everything is our own fault. We let this happen to us. When some communist fanboys preached long enough, we took it as truth. When you talk to older people, their reply is 'you didn't know what it was like then'. I'm sure it was bad. I'm sure the pressure was in peoples minds. However, those days are OVER and if we want to go forward, we must face our past. No matter how dirty it is.

We can take out our armoured vehicles and just go one on one bumper cars.. just like jousting. The go at it in a big street where we can all watch it and cheer for our own. The vehicles must go toe to toe as long as it takes until one of the vehicles can't run anymore. Then it gets replaced with a new one from the line.
We see who lasts the longest but I predict it will be about 6 months worth of tournament.
We can add some fun to it and have lots of booze for the drivers. I mean fighting soldiers. How much alcohol in their blood would then be multiplied with the damage they can do to their enemy. So for example if you drink one bottle of vodka and smash two enemy vehicles, it's worth more because you're so drunk. But if you're TOO drunk, you're likely to get eliminated too soon so you have to be really good at this.
We can even make bets for it. Make the DVD.. Finland vs Poland - The War of the new millenium. Something like that. Should be fun.

Tiitisen lista.. I've heard of it, but I haven't seen it
and yes I agree, it should be looked into. You know what.. I really think there is something in there because our secret service says they won't investigate. You know what that really means, right? It means they HAVE checked it out and found out people in there who they don't want to mention, because it would cause too much commotion. Of course they have checked out the list. It's not like they would just store it and say 'we're too busy'. They did investigate that one person, they sure as hell have checked out the rest of the names handed over from foreign services, for free. I bet they requested them, or the timing would be.. well quite a coicidence..
So that list of names must be really hot. There is NO other reason why they should say they will not investigate it. At least I can't think of any other reasons. LOTS of students did go as operatives plus at that time you must remember that especially many students in political fields did have sympathies for leftist radicalism. For that reason only this should be taken more seriously. Who knows what kind of information foreign governments have from us. Is our national security in danger? Of course they have investigated it, it's their job. But the list is too hot. Which makes me want to see it even more.
Would be kind of ironic, that you might be voting ex-spy and communist symphatizer in the next elections who have handed over secret documents to other countries and spied, and secret service know who they are but don't let you know it. So you are pretty much raped in the ass, right? Of course many of these youngesters back then have had change of heart. I'm not saying we should go after them with extreme prejudice. BUT if there are high ranking people there, it MUST be known OR we are not an open society we claim to be. Why are they covering someones ass and put so much effort into it? Not very patriotic p-)

(Ask americans why one of their M1A1 is in moscow since 1980's ;-) )
w00t? Can you post a link to any background story about that? Sounds interesting!
And Marmot, we have many different beer's...
I'm trying to find some info in english... but basically some M1 were transfered on transport ships in grece and polish agents menaged to transfer one onto wrong ship that was heading to poland or romania (sorry it was long and I dont remember details) and in consequence it ended in moscow...
and here is little info about maj Zacharski (mentioned earlier in this thread)
Marian Zacharski
Marian Zacharski, a Polish intelligence officer was operating under commercial cover, posing as a salesman for a Polish export firm.
The FBI arrested him in 1981. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Four years later, he was exchanged for 25 Western agents held in Soviet and East European prisons in one of the Cold Wars periodic spy swaps.
Zacharski was dubbed the "Silicon Valley spy" by the US media because of his success in stealing US defense secrets and technology.
Zacharski paid or arranged payment of $110,000 to William Holden Bell, a senior radar engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, California.
The information Bell provided on the F-15 Look Down-Shoot Down Radar, TOW anti-tank missile, Phoenix air-to-air missile, and quiet radar saved the Soviets approximately $185 million in technological research and advanced their technology by about 5 years by permitting them to implement proven design concepts.
The neo-Communist press in Poland hailed him as the "biggest star of Polish intelligence in the Communist era."
On 15 August, 1994 the Polish Government announced Zacharskis appointment as head of civilian intelligence in the Office of State Protection.
On the August 17, 1994 the US Embassy delivered a démarche to the Polish Government. It noted that Zacharski was still under a life sentence in the United States and requested that Warsaw reconsider his appointment.
Zacharski withdrew his name the next day.

We care. We the Finns care.Boring :|
No it's not boring :)Yeah, ok :) Well, its funny, poor Finns, and bad Poles :(
Couple of things....
Finland does have couple of different kids of intelligence services, they are just unlike many others quite successful IE not many knows about anything about them.....
I can name SUPO and Sotilas tiedustelu also Puolustusvoimien strategian laitos....... thats 3... and those all are public knowledge.....
Also what comes to the Poles spying on us, it was ordered by KGB that suspected that Finns were supplying the WEST with intel about the WARSAW PACTH which we were doing....
Now that would be odd if we wouldnt have fuctional intel services..
:P
Also, i can say that our airforce operates few ELINT / SIGINT convigured transport a/c.... pics of least one have been published in AirForces Monthly.. (FF-3 [Fokker F-27 Friendship type of a/c.......], which is full of different kinds of antennas and receivers that its actually comical....)

About SUPO (Finnish secret/protective police) I read a time ago that they had
officially been granted to create 150 fake identies (with Finnish social security
numbers, identity cards etc) that could be used by their undercover agents.
Well, when a thing like that comes to the public knowledge, one can probably
be sure that they had those false identities for decades probably.
I think that Puolustusvoimien Materiaalilaitos (PvMatL) should be counted in here
as well. They donīt exactly have "agents". But they probably "order" information
they want the military intelligence to find some info about. The Swedish FMV
(defence material administration) atleast have got their hands on Russian defence
technology, in example radars etc, and I assume that this has been done via
MUST, Swedish military intelligence. But of course, as in all these things, who
knows :)

I think those tests have been conducted by Porin Tekniikkaopisto. It seems
that one of the FDF Fokkers will be donated to them. They have earlier received
FDF aircraft for testing/training purposes.

How come the eagle is pointed west and not east against the Ruskies?
Hm, but itīs the same thing with the Finnish lion, maybe some heraldic rule.
http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/images/vaakeng/va_suomi.gif
Atleast the lion is stepping on a curved Ruskie sword, the
Finnish lion comes from the Swedish Folkunga-clan, that fought
for the power before Sweden was Sweden basically, they came
out on top in the late 12th and early 13th century when they
crushed their other opponents and basically created Sweden.

What comes to the Finnish SIGINT all the recruits are being recruited from technical universities (the special officers). VKL or Viestikoelaitos (Communications Experience Faculty) is the institute that provides Finland information about it's electronic threats (ie. Russia).
I swore to God, I'm going to be one of those guys.

mustamato,
What tests? The ELINT / SIGINT F-27 has been operational for years (and is about to be replaced......), and before that they had tweaked DC-3.....
all in all FAF has had three F-27:s, one as "liner or passager a/c" (FF-2), one as Paratroop "trainer" (FF-3) and one as ELINT / SIGINT.... (FF-1)
(Sorry i initially recalled the number wrong.......)
Link! (http://www.aeronautics.ru/news/news001/afm-may-2001/css/afm-may-2001_8.htm)
"Finland after new ELINT platform
FINLAND HAS a requirement to replace its ELINT configured Fokker F27 with a new and more modern platform Since 1989 a single modified F27-100 (FF-1) has been flown by the 3rd Flight of the Finnish Air Force's (llmavoimat) Operational Support Squadron (Tukilentolaivue) based at Tikkokoski. This seldom seen aircraft has been fitted with an extensive antenna farm along its underfuselage and wings, but does not have the high-altitude performance needed for optimum data collection Finland is known to have examined a Gulfstream-based solution for its next-generation intelligence-gathering platform. A decision on the Finnish competition is expected before the end of 2001.
