View Full Version : How to get rid of damaged ammo?

Howdy. Last time I went shooting I got a double feed through my AR and the star chamber damaged one of the rounds to the point where I don't want to attempt to shoot it.
I've never done it before so I'm curious as to where the best place to take the round to for disposal would be, I really don't want a damaged round laying around.
I was thinking about taking it to a local gun shop, and that seems like the best place, but like I said, I don't know.

Sound like some are working for the Darwin Award for 2007,
If you have a bullet puller, pull the bullet dump the powder and add penetrating oil to the primer. If the Brass is reloadable, you can use it for reloading, after any oil is removed. or Recycle the brass.
The powder (smokerless) will burn, or you can add a little to garden (I was told this and don't know if it is true, the nirtogen in it will add to growth of plants?)
Bullets also can be removed by grabing the case and forcing th bullet to go back and force, loosening it and spreading the neck.

As HOLLiS said remove the bullet by using a leatherman pulling the round out of the case and then dump the power out.
I have always used this method with 5.56 and 7.62 with no probems.
Remember saftey first.

I don't have any reloading tools so doing this myself is out of the question. Is it possible to just give it to a gunshop?

Kinetic bullet puller is about 13-15 bucks. Ranges suppose to have special containers for ammo dump - ours looks like a bin for cigarette butts, painted in red with "Ammo" on top - drop the bad cartridge in the top and it drops inside the bin... You could also put cartridge in a vice and twist-and-pull with pliers - military ammo is a little harder to undo though. If the casing is brass - hack the body with a metal saw and trickle out the powder.
I tried boiling cartridges for over an hour once - I have no idea if that demilled them... But I've read it suppose to - just don't use any pot you would want to re-use for cooking later

Yeah my old range used to have one of those, but I live in a city now and I was out shooting on some private land. I'm not going to try to mess with it myself because I don't really know much about the properties of the powder and I really don't want to be conducting experiments with it.

I know you are meant to be humorous along with the othe jokesters on this thread, but firearms are not a joke. There are people slow enough to take you up on it, or try it to see what happens. Check out the Darwin Awards for 2006.
I am rather old school about not clowning around with firearms.
Imagine if some Darwin recipient took you up on this?
Besides the Liberal anti gun nuts love it when there are accidents with firearms. The bloodier, and the most distruction to a human from a accident is something they prey would happen so they can promote their anti-gun adgenda.

A gunshop, most gun ranges or even the police department will dispose of old damaged rounds for you.

Hollis,
I know that nitrate is added to the soil for crops to grow. However in a nutshell you will make the soil more acidic, killing soil life within ten years that took 2000 year to get this far and will take fourty for it to start recovering. If used in the quantities intensive farms do.
What happens to an acidic soil? Only weeds will grow so you will have to spray more... killin more soil life where no nutrients will be found by your crops so you will have to put more fertilizer on it.... its a downwards spiral

When I manage to come across a faulty . 308 (or whatever ) round, I use them for long range target practice.
Merely place said round on a fence post, back off 100 metres, and see how many shots it takes you to destroy it.

Wife says, "I really don't want you helping im the garden anymore."

Speaking of bullet pullers I wish they made toys out of the same plastic mine is made of. I have beaten it on an oak block for 6 years and it has not even cracked!

I have deleted a fair proportion of the posts from this thread - most were pretty damned stupid at best, some suggested extremely dangerous practices.
Think carefully before posting on this thread. I have a ten point infraction awaiting the next idiot who posts something stupid.
