Just a quick question. Do Marines continue to use their M40A3's in a urban enviorment like Ramadi or the Suni Triangle or are they issued semi-auto's like SAM-R's. I thought that since they may need to engage multiple targets at once they might sway away from the bolt action M40's. What do you know?

Thanks in advance

IIRC the SAM-R is for a Squad DM and the M40 is what the SS use. I can see what you are getting at but you still have to put the crosshair on the enemy before you squeeze off a round, bolt action or semi.

The SAMR was only issued in limited numbers. Most S/Ss will be deployed in small teams and will have M4s or M16A4s and possibly a SAW as a backup.

There's been a lot of rumors floating around about the possibility of increased procurement of semi-automatic rifles like the SR-25 but for now the snipers carry additional service rifles.

Yeah, thanks a lot. that cleared everything up.

That rumor about the SR-25s is probably false. I think only SEALs and maybe, MAYBE Recon use it. I doubt it'll find its way to Scout Snipers hands with better alternatives like the MK11/12

false, marine sniper teams do use semi-automatic service rifles in Iraq due to the urban terrain/nature of the fight. Most are SR-25 or similar, although some will use M4 with ACOG and barrel extension. observe:

edit: when that pops up, click on "SNIPER II" on the top tab and scroll through.

barrel extension = steel pipe + glue + tape ? ;)

Check out the link raph_g posted above. That particular S/S team was armed exclusively with semi-autos (MK11s and M4s), no M40A1/A3s in sight.

Am I missing the barrel extensions? There are a lot of suppressors (actually, more than I've ever seen actually used--nice to know someone does).

The military doesn't have to use civilian fake-suppressor "barrel extensions"...

the m4s on those last 2 photos are sweet, I saw quite a few barrel extensions in there

Exclusively huh? Picture 8 in that series.

Some of you need to confine your comments to what you know and not speculate so much. A lot of false statements going around in this thread.

i agree jtar all im saying is ive seen pics 'marines' (dudes wearing marpat) using m4's with acogs m16a4's with acogs, SAM-R's with ringed optics and m40a1's and a few of the SR-25 posted in the photos and videos section, if you search you'll find a whole load of pics of what your looking for, but ill just say this i dont think there is any reason to 'replace' the m40 with a semi automatic weapon, the m40 has its role and thats to hit point targets at a very long range with 1 shot, id say the semi automatic weapons are only there to supplement this.

Disclaimer: IM NOT A BTDT THANKYOU.

The TA31 Rifle Combat Optic (ACOG) is not a sniper's optic. It is the future all-purpose combat optic for the Marines.

Not sure what your post is saying about pic 8.

Eh, was in too much of a hurry to derail the flood of bad information in this thread. There's some significant gaps in knowledge here about how Scout/Sniper teams operate, and using one or two teams from 2/8s platoon to say how all units are equipped is incorrect, at best. The S/S community's weapons issue is in flux right now, with a lot of weapons in testing and usage based on how and where they were acquired.
