Far enough not to be touch by the flames.

But I wonder why and how he was here. People are not supposed to be outside at this moment. Right?

During an exercise, everyone is to be inside the ship.

I have heard a Standard missile launch, but not nearly that close. That guy must have permanet hearing loss.

Ever heard of Douglas Brent Hegdahl. He was a sailor that fell overboard during the Vietnam war and was captured by the North Vietnamese. He spent some time in the Hanoi Hilton with McCain and other airforce pilots.

The reason he fell overboard was he went topside during a bombardment and was thrown overboard. He was told repeatedly not to do it but wouldn't take anybody's word for it.

Now he is celebrated for being a hero when he is just a stupid idiot.

My dad told me the story because he was on the Canberra at the time and was the last one to see Hegdahl before he went overboard.

You dont have to be inside of the ship during the launch, but your not suppose to be that close. My dad has a bunch of cool pictures he took when he was in the Navy of Talos and other missiles launching. He was usually on the upper decks of the ship when he took the pictures from the outside. This is the main ship that my dad served on in his 6 years in the Navy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Long_Beach_%28CGN-9%29

There's a few reasons he's being celebrated as a hero...
