Hello, i am looking for pictures of MiG-29 9.13. Specifically b/n 22 from Lipetsk:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Russia---Air/Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-29.../1395564/L/

Currently i have only 1 picture in my collection of it, this one:

I am also looking for the "aggressor birds" with white *****es, ala:

My God, what an ugly modification. I've always hated that damned fuel **** on the back. Makes the plane looks like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

It boggles the mind that the same theoretical aircraft model developed by Sukhoi and perfected by TsAGI can look so magnificent on Su-27 and so fugly on many (though not all) of Mig-29 modifications.

Beauty, they say, is in the eye of a beholder. You, my friend, are blind as a bat, however. :) 29 is a gorgeous in all modifications.

Too bad about 50% of the footage is from Black Sea fleet, not Northern and the ship on 0:18 doesnt look Russian. Am I too **** about this, or other people bothered by this kind of things? I'll shut up if no one cared. Really. :)

I know that most of the ships in the video are from the Black Sea fleet but I just like the music and the firepower.

As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion MiG-29 (9-12) is prettier than Su-27 (which is my second favorite). And 9-13 while not as beautiful as 9-12 is very beautiful in its way.

Thanks for the pics Zmey! Shame i still don't have a top shot, and the other side. Lets hope...I will go through missiles.ru and Pilot's blog.

Btw: MiG-29M/MiG-35 >> MiG-29 9.13 >>> MiG-29 9.12. :D

SMT has grown on me, mainly due to camo.

Getting cloooooser:

http://spotters.net.ua/file/?id=4999&size=large

Argh, b/n 22 and 23 doesn't have same camo on the fins, so these two are not 22 and 23. Or they are, but repainted. :cantbeli:

Traditional photo report from the celebration of the 80-th anniversary of the foundation of Russian Airborne troops (VDV). This year I visited Red Square. At Red Square, as always, were the main events with participation of VDV Commander-in-Chief, special guests and veterans.

Russian Airborne troops date back 80 years and were for the first time presented to military leaders on 2 August 1930 during the Moscow District exercise where 12 paratroops were dropped from an airplane.

Yes, elite airborne detachment. About circus, VDV is not only a military branch but a culture of its own in a way, often do "demos" and shows for public and family entertainment.

That was from LifeNews, you trusty source of the best firsthand bull**** on the 'Net. ;)
The base that caught fire (which was quickly extinguished anyway) was an old boneyard that held a lot of junk written off back in Soviet times. Though, there's possibility that a lot of stuff there was already sold for scrap metal and the fires were just a bit too convenient to not to use them as a coverup. ;)

And then:

aaaand:

I know the Irbis radar was tested on a Su-30MK2 platform, but I read that the MK2 simply doesn't have the power output to make the radar operate at peak power. Is this true?.

Is this a final version of Pantsir for ground units? It have different radars and OE equipment than Pantsir for export and PVO VVS. I wonder how much their caracteristics are different, what means that measures against one could not work against the other. I hope this tracked version will soon be in production and work together with Tor-M2.

Russian Air Force is getting the wheeled Pantsir. I think the tracked version is for export to UAE.

Tor is Army battalion-level ack-ack so it needs mobility, but Pantsir is for the Air Force, to protect S-300/S-400 batteries, so it will mostly be stationary and won't require tracks for increased mobility.

The Su-35 has an engine with a slightly larger diameter, so you can't just put a Su-35 engine into an older Su-27. But in terms of driving the radar, you probably could put the Irbis into an older Su-27, maybe with an alternator update as well. But this might not be worth it, might just be better to build more new Su-35s.

Somebody can ID the ship of 18th second, please?

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=132682&d=1281058712

That's North Fleet's 956 project destroyer "Besstrashnyi" (Fearless), AKA "Admiral Ushakov" since 2004, side number 434 since 1996. How cannot you recognize the characteristic quad Moskit launchers I'm at loss, frankly.

Why did they change that ship's name, anyway?

It’s hard to tell if it is Russian or German sniper. He wears German zeltbahn (quarter shelter), helmet looks like German (especially due to typical mosquito net), sniper optics Russian but 6x30 binocular most likely is German Dienstglas. I do not think that Russians there wearing captured German helmets.

This is German sniper. Just look at his M43 cap, K98k, WH camouflage smock. Color of barrel cleaning chain is wrong; it was made from aluminum (grey/ silver, NOT red).

Did the Germans roll their smokes? I recall Kurt Vonnegut's impression of the Russian soldiers--they rolled huge cigarettes...

You have original photo with name inscription? Maybe more details are visible on it? To use German quarter shelters was common practice among Russians but helmet still looks German to me and that is VERY strange.

Anyway good job and interesting pictures, thanks for sharing.

Germans rolled cigarettes too. One of most popular cigarette paper producers was EFKA. So you need to find better argument than this.

I am not 100% sure who is that soldier due to strange set of field gear. At least three versions possible:
- ROA sniper?
- Soviet sniper?
- German sniper?

Ivan Kulbertinov van Kulbertinov, born in 1917 in the village of Tien Olekminskiy Ulus family Evenki - hunter. Learn he did not. Family Yearly wandered through the taiga, engaging in hunting.

In July 1942 (aged 25), Ivan went to the front. Fought at Moscow, liberated Orel, Course, Kiev, Vinnitsa, fought in the North - Western, Central, 1 st Ukrainian front.

His account of combat in the role of sniper Ivan Kulbertinov opened February 27, 1943. In the battle of the old Russian, he bit the well-aimed shot first enemy soldier. Total fraction of a second requires a sniper, in order to make accurate shots, but for this he had to spend hours, sometimes days on end and sit in any - any shelter, sometimes without being able to eat and drink.

Here is an excerpt from the memoirs of the Kulbertinova: "I was lying in wait for two days, every vein, every nerve was strained - looking at the barn, where Germans settled. I see - a cart drove up with ammunition. Well, I think you'll Krauts" Aurora Borealis "! Germans began unload ammunition. I waited until they removed the boxes from the wagon, loaded with armor piercing sniper - an incendiary bullet, and sent a "sweet gostinets." all went Top-turvy, rose a huge column of fire, smoke, dust. More than a dozen Germans were killed by the explosion. "

From the memoirs of NI Djatlova, commander of the unit, which served as Ivan Kulbertinov: "A German sniper straight - tortured us." Several of our men have claimed the lives of his well-aimed bullet. I turned to Ivan: "We must destroy the enemy sniper, give, take action! "He asked him to help him dig a trench at night about 20 meters ahead of the main line and lay down in it. With the dawn of a German sniper began shelling our positions, but where he was hiding, it was difficult to determine. Kulbertinov decided to wait for sunrise. As an experienced hunter, he knew mysterious properties of dew: the sunrise of the shot is always a smoke cloud. And so it happened. "In a dense crown of a tree after the next shot, the sniper was formed smoke ring, which has become a sniper for the German rock ..."

During the war Kulbertinov trained sniper art of 35 young men. Young snipers, he advised: "Less imitators, look for their own methods of struggle. Find the new positions and new ways of masking. Do not be afraid to go behind enemy lines, remember: do not cut with an ax, where you can use a needle."

The glory of Kulbertinove as a sniper - ace grew at the front with every day. Oh very formidable he was for the Germans. Behind him constantly hunted best German hands, but every once in a tense duel Kulbertinov emerged victorious. One killed near Chernigov German officer was found not sent home a letter. It was written: "Large losses of bear from the Russian sniper. He haunts us at every turn, does not raise our heads. We sat without food and water, you can not get out of the dugout." This sniper was Ivan Kulbertinov.

During the fighting on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War I. Kulbertinov destroyed 487 Nazi soldiers and officers. For courage and heroism he was awarded the Order of Red Banner of Fame third degree, World War 1 and 2 nd degree, Red Star and medals, to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union. However, a number of reasons, only many years later this title was awarded to him posthumously. He died in 1993 at the 76-th year of life, buried in the village of Tien Olekminskiy Ulus.

That's North Fleet's 956 project destroyer "Besstrashnyi" (Fearless), AKA "Admiral Ushakov" since 2004, side number 434 since 1996. How cannot you recognize the characteristic quad Moskit launchers I'm at loss, frankly.

I know Russian air force receive wheeled Pantsirs which we see in parade. UAE receive Pantsirs on MAN vehicles. Tracked version of Pantsir is meant for ground forces, not for air force, to replace Tunguska, where it works together with Tor and Buk. Fact is, that ground force Pantsir and air force Pantsir have different radars and EO equipment and with this different capabilities. I just wonder why they don't have the same equipment. Maybe because of price. Other question is, how near are they to get in production for ground units.

Perhaps you are right about cap. So he is Russian after all. It is very misleading picture. Than again strange choice of head gear, IMHO that sort of cap is very uncomfortable for sniping.

Actually, using the captured enemy equipment was something of a fad during the war. One of the most commonly used "trophy" items was Walther P-38 pistol, especially among officers. Issue TT-33 pistols were generally disliked by the officers due to shoddy wartime production quality and uncomfortable grip, while Walthers lied in the hand nicely, were rather easily available and ammo was in ready supply as well, especially in the later part of the war. Other equipment was widely used as well -- like the famous ribbed gas mask case (generally used by the both sides to hold various small items after throwing the mas out) or canteen. In fact, Soviet postwar canteen was a direct copy of a German one.

Смотр проходил в лесу в окрестностях Линца, поэтому местное население советских солдат в <таком виде> не видело, и после этого смотра немецкие каски в полку больше ни разу не использовались."

Mmmm, maybe. But Ssh-36 and M-37 look very similar to Stahlhelm, so identifying that guy's helmet in the original picture you are arguing about by look alone doesn't cut it.

Actually, Ssh-36 (if you really mean good, old Khalkhingolka) looks much, much closer to the old Adrian helmet, on which it was still, abeit distantly, based, than to the Stahlhelm. Ssh-36 has much more rounded crown and ear flaps, and doesn't have the creased rear skirt of a Stahlhelm. It also have a sort of a ridge on top, covering the vent holes, that was inherited from the Adrian helmet -- this was removed only in later versions, and a very ****ounced peak.

the ziqqurat of Russia's true Merodach aka Stalin... i was always wondering why the bolsheviks chose these assyrian symbols of power

Because it was built in 1924 during the height of constructivism, or art deco period, which drew its inspiration from Egyptian and Mayan architecture (influenced by the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922). Russia was leading in avant-garde architecture at the time because, of course, it was breaking with the past in form and content. Here is, no doubt familar, example of Soviet progressive and inspirational use of deco art:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3008/528999122.jpg
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/4449/769861349.jpg

Eventually, Stalinism put an end to this modernism, ushering an era of the so-called Stalinist neo-classism, familiar from such buildings as the Moscow University (Stalinists gothic skyscrapers).

yes sir they do, but then again, most of them are age range 18-22 I would guess. I don't remember if they are contract servicemen or not. I know a lot of the VDV regiments are. And these are Special Units of the VDV, so I would guess so.

That statue - of the peasant woman and steel worker - used to be on a plinth next to VDNK, a few metres from the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow.

It was taken down a few years ago - I was told for restoration.

Does anyone know what happened to it - and what plans there are to put it back on display ??

My guess would be increased battlefield security. Snipers and shooters of sorts tend to pick out officers first, so shoulder "pogony" could be compromising.

maybe I'm over-thinking it, maybe there really is not logical explanation...

Originally that statue was created to crown the Soviet pavilion at 1937 World Fair in Paris. Actually, recreated pedestal now mirrors the shape and height of the original structure, which, incidentally, stood just across the street from the German pavilion. Thus the Nazi flag.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/66/La_Tour_Eiffel_en_1937_contrast.png

Also, JFYI, there was mentions above of Seven Sisters being classicist, and art deco decline during the Stalin time, that's not true. While in Stalin's time classicism indeed was encouraged, all those skyscrapers were the stellar examples of the very art deco style that was supposedly in decline. In fact, what declined was constructivism, not art deco -- while both styles were modernist in nature, they has very different origins and flavor, and constructivism was inextricably linked with the turmoil and radical thought of the Twenties, which Stalin, a deeply conservative man, much disliked. Art deco in architecture and design, on the other hand, flourished, for the large part because rapidly modernizing Soviet Union looked after American examples, and US itself were in the grip of that style in the thirties.

Paintjob? *facepalm* I'll just assume you are joking. 8)

why is the sonar antenna OPSEC'd?

The same reason all the bow torpedo tubes have been photoshopped out of these two pictures. THEY don't want you to know everything.

Speaking of the Navy. Here's a cool (or not very, depending on your perspective) video of a Russian submarine (probably Kilo?) passing a fishing boat at periscope depth.

Remember, boys and girls, this is how terrible accidents happen.

Remember, boys and girls, this is how terrible accidents happen.

It's a very famous video. This ship is not a fishing boat. It's an "sudno kontrolya fizicheskih poley", SFP. In fact, normal procedure of measuring magnetic, acoustic etc... signatures of the submarine.
