Interesting, the helicopter pad is on top of the bridge. First time I see such a design.

It's not that common, but not unheard of for the utility craft, where there's often no place for it on the deck. BTW, from what I've seen about the ship, it's more of an ammo transport or multi-functional collier rather than salvage/rescue tug, which is stated to be only secondary function. That is, there would be provisions for tugging and salvage equipment, but it won't carry it in normal operation.

They usually don't, but definitely can. It's classified, though.

It's not about engines. It depends on fuel composition.

It's not "fighters", which implies that smoky engines appear on several Russian aircraft, but just on the Mig-29's engine. And the problem has already been solved in the new version of that same engine.

And on F-4 it was also due to intakes?

It depends on the engine, simple as that. Maybe little bit on quality of the fuel. But as far as i know F-15 and F-4 use same fuel (JPG-4 or something?) so again, it is because of the engine construction, service etc.

What's the difference in the colors of the numbers? What do blue numbers stand for and what to red numbers stand for? Why the different colors?

AFAIK, the colors don't really mean anything, they are just to distinguish the planes with the same number, as there's no central authority assigning them (it's usually done on the unit level) and there's much overlap -- a large airbase can easily have more than 100 planes/helos, and these numbers are 2-digit.

what does the Gvozdika stand for?

Carnation is the official symbol of GRU and reconnaissance units under GRU command.

The bat, by the way, is not official and non-regulation as are other tigers, lions, boars and other animals on different unit patches.

Back in the 90s there were no real rules about unit patches, so different units got "creative" and devised various animal patches for themselves.

Then the heraldic section of MOD finally decided to "clean the house" and banned all these unofficial animal designs, including the bat.

Unique video of Naval combat during a five-day war

Video was taken inside of Russian MRK "Mirazh", as I understand these sailors are responsible for engine etc, not missile launches. It was a surprise for them that the main complex was fired.
People, from where I've taken this footage, say that the fence was blasted by the flame from the missile. And an officer is hitting the indicators because as they say small arrows can stuck because of the backblast.

my understanding is this amount is strictly for weapons procurement...

there were also reports that Navy is going to get funding separate from this... I'll add sources later

IMHO he's no better or worse... he may have been a good man but he simply lost the power struggle and had to step down... it's very competitive and brutal up there and all these ppl this high up are acutely aware of that fact... there are no surprises there for anyone and everyone knows the stakes

Nuclear powered i presume?

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/2122/s10r.jpg

Ulyanovsk was supposed to be nuclear-powered. As long as they are not using the catapults, they could even go with gas turbines. Makes the overall project much cheaper.

In my personal opinion, nuclear propulsion on aircraft carriers is overrated. Sure, it gives carriers more endurance, but the reality is that the carrier only moves as fast and as far as the slowest ship in the battle group moves. And unless you are planning to build nuclear destroyers, the carrier battle group will still be limited to the endurance of destroyer/frigate gas/diesel turbines. Steam catapults are only real long-term advantage that nuclear propulsion gives.

As an alternative to Ulyanovsk (project 1143.7), Nevskoye PKB design bureau could resurrect their original nuclear carrier designs from the 60s-70s, Project 1153 and Project 1160.

Nuclear propulsion, steam catapults, no angled deck, 70,000 tons displacement.

Well, it sure as heck looks better and more logical design than Kuznetsov.

Nuclear powered i presume?

Hey, I have them over my head twice a week and won't be against trading places -- the thing is seriously loud. Like head-cracking-from-inside loud -- D-30s weren't really designed to whisper...

don't have any exact numbers... but rumor on forums puts it at about a 100... but that could be old news...

That's definitely wrong. There are only 100 MiG-31s in active service right now - the rest are in storage - and all the recent pictures we're seeing of MiG-31s, most are still standard versions (its easy to spot the MiG-31BM, after all - just look at the wing hardpoints and whether there's an antenna on top of the cockpit or not).

(Blue 93 is an obvious MiG-31BM, for example. I've seen five or six different aircraft that are definitely BM standard)

Well, 4 short hardpoints and antenna on cockpit are the marks of the BM. Now that picture shows a Foxhound with 4 hardpoints (two long and two short) and lacking the cockpit antenna:

An special designation for that version ? Thanks.

If it went into service I would have said Mig-31M, because of the large windows of the second cockpit, but russian aviation is not my thing, despite of the name :-)

Russian ground forces will receive first Tor-M2 systems in 2011.

looks like there were some improvements...

Krush noted that the Tor-M2U "in 1,2-1,4 times enlarged strike zone height, speed and course setting. Work is being completed to increase two-fold (from 8 to 16 units) Ammunition for combat vehicle of anti-aircraft guided missiles, as well as distance and speed of the targeted goals.

Some sources claim, that new missile for Tor-M2 9K332 have 15 km range in 9 km in altitude. Those missiles will be for domestic Tors, while export ones will use older 9K331 missiles with 12 km range from Tor-M1.

Well, 4 short hardpoints and antenna on cockpit are the marks of the BM. Now that picture shows a Foxhound with 4 hardpoints (two long and two short) and lacking the cockpit antenna:

An special designation for that version ? Thanks.

That one is standard MiG-31B/BS.

That one is standard MiG-31B/BS.

Tks metberkut. But MiG-31B/BS is commonly described (and pictured) as having only two wing hardpoints (the long ones) often fitted with dual missile-rails. So... some intermediate development maybe...

flanker7, AFAIK MiG-31M never reached active service and was noticeable by having a one-piece wind screen canopy.

Tks both of you for your replies.

There should be around 170 Mig-31s in service with around 100 in reserve. Those numbers would match up to how many PVO units are active with Mig-31s.

And wiki as well as enemyforces state that there are over 200 in active service with 100 in reserve. So it is possible that there are around 170 or more. I too would like to know the actual numbers on the upgraded systems.

Sorry for my late answer!
This is the official new GRU patch for the troops:

There is also a similar one with a sword instead of the arrow for the administration personal.

We do not need discussion. The normal person with own brain understands that...,
That... The gift! This is the cool gift! Is this gift so necessary? We know about Auctions. For example, Ministry Def of Russia spends auctions on sale of excessive property and buys the necessary equipment by auction’s money. Do you think Porsche is necessary for the Ministry of Emergency Measures? For what? This car has the huge price as ten fire-engine vehicles!

ok so I did some research and it looks like about 60 of MiG-31s have been upgraded to the BM standard so far

For some reason i remember number "64". But that is in plans, not upgraded yet, but the initial first package is of 64 aircrafts. I just remember that number for some reason. Might be totally wrong.

Ah, that makes sense then. My memory is odd. I don't remember to take out the trash, but i remember this kind of stuff...

So have approx 60 been upgraded? Or is that still a work-in-progress?

lol, is this serious? I mean it's not a joke or so? Cause dam... IVECO just stood there :|
I sure wish that they'd favour Tiger instead of IVECO.
nah.
"iveco" better than "tiger" simply because of v-hull (able to sustain explosion of 5kg TEq, which make "tigr" fly around in pieces).
i finally glad to see that our command begins to take care about personnel more.

does the fact they are going to be assembled in Russia mean they get the armor tech or no? hmm

If they manufacture it, but do not get the ability to manufacture the armor either, then there is no point for it. Would blow up to piece just like the Tigr.

the more the better) at least 100 but better yet 150... plus they can bring some out of storage... but if they got 60 so far that's a very significant improvement considering the BM package

There are a total of 256 Mig-31's (156 Active and 100 in reserve). If they can bring those out, fix them up, upgrade them, then they would have a formidable air defense system. Like F-22, 180 or less just isn't enough.

Well according to book "Russian Air Power" by Yefim , the current BM upgrade has little or nothing in common compared to the old upgrade proposed in 90's , in reality the new upgrade has no focus on ground attack with PGM ( a hallmark of previous upgrade ) but qualitatively increases the Air Defence capability of Mig-31BM , surprisingly the designation BM has been retained though this has nothing in common compared to old BM.

The potential of the new BM has been increased from 1.5 to 4 times depending on the mission and with new/upgraded weapons they have been given the capability to effectively deal with stealth target and hypersonic missile.

There are two main problems with the Tigr. First, Tigr is essentially a police vehicle -- it isn't modular, it has no V-hull and its armor is lousy, which is okay for a police armored car, used against protesters and to ferry SWAT around, but just not enough for a light army truck. And second -- it used to have imported Cummins engine, which is a big no-no. GAZ actually has a second iteration of the vehicle -- Volk, which is essentially a modular Tigr with improved armor. And they acquired the license to build the engine domestically, so this problem is also more or less solved. So it's more a matter of haggling between the army and the industry.

Tigr doesn't need to have great big armour, it's after all replacing the UAZik (at least in role) which had thin sheet metal for "armour". Imho the most it needs to do is stop light arms fire and maybe have some anti-mine protection (V-hull). If you start going much beyond that it will start to have mobility issues unless you put bigger/more wheels on it and bigger engine etc. But then it will no longer really be a UAZik replacement but closer to a BTR.

Khathi
08-20-2010, 09:38 AM
The most ironic thing is that Tigr essentially is a chopped-in-half BTR with a different hull. And it was designed to replace not UAZ, but GAZ-66 -- in other words, it's no jeep, it's a light truck.

hasn't this modernization been going on "for a while"... or is this like the Su 34 contract (aircraft "purchased" with little/no ACTUAL deliveries being made)?

by the way how many SMs are there do you think?

First is that nobody know the official requirements. Only found this video too, and rumors from 21 НИИИ МО РФ wich has tested this vehicles. They tested 4 vehicles, but not under same conditions. Klick. (http://www.stoletie.ru/tekuschiiy_moment/iveko_protiv_tigra_2010-08-10.htm) <- just example.

Second is that Marshal Taburetkin (Serdykov) had problems to drive Gaz during first and his last trial. But he had fun with Iveco Vip-version on smooth road. And his best friend works at Kamaz too.

P.S. It is photos thread, i know.

I am not sure tbh lynxy. But i am pretty damn sure that there is not 64 combat ready MiG-31BM's. Su-34 are made, slowly. It is due to factory, but they have updated a lot of toolings, so it will pick up speed as time goes. More Su-34's will be delivered at the end of the year, not too long ago i read that atleast one more airframe is assembled now. It needs to do some ground testing and adjusting, and then it will be delivered.

Regarding Su-27SM's, the list of aircrafts in service two pages back says 55. That is actually slightly more than i suspected. I also remember they ordered 12 more not too long ago.

Still building, but no new submarines will be started for now.

Also, the funding seems precarious, so one of the submarines might not be funded to completion. Nobody really knows for sure.

There were major problems with the propulsion system, sonar and the combat information system. Supposedly solved during trials, but the Navy isn't happy with the entire project.

Since we are on the topic of submarines, I wanted to share some information that I left me absolutely speechless.

http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/2159/a6sjj.jpg

I read an news article that mentioned that Yuri Dogoruki, the first Borei submarine (pictured) went on a newest set of sea trials in the White Sea (perhaps preparing for the launch of Bulava later this month?). The same article mentioned that the cost of the Borei programme was the following:

- 9 billion rubles (293 million USD) on research and development
- 14 billion rubles (457 million USD) on construction

Holy building-enormous-nuclear-submarines-on-the-cheap, Batman! By comparison, a cost of a single Mistral-class ship built in France is projected at 708 million USD. Seriosly?!

Now, this doesn't take a genius, but what would you rather have for the Russian Navy: an extra 4 state-of-the-art nuclear ballistic missile submarines at 1,8 billion USD, or 4 glorified hospital ships at 2.8 billion USD? Think about it.

Arent there 3 Project 677 subs in building (Kronshtadt, Sevastopol, Petrozavodsk)?

English Wikipedia article on Lada-class is misleading.

There are only 2 submarines under construction, Kronshtadt and Sevastopol. When Sevastopol was laid down, it was originally reported to be called Petrozavodsk, but I think they renamed it Sevastopol later on.

Anyway, whatever you call it, there is not 4th Lada under construction.

You make it sound like a rhetorical question. But its not. Its not 1975. Russia doesnt need 4 EXTRA missile subs on top of operational, under construction and planned ones. Russian navy needs Mistral class of ships more than EXTRA missile subs. (Note, that at no point I deny the need to have some missile subs though)

I disagree, but I guess it's more of a philosophical question.

Naval component of the nuclear triad is the most robust (but also the most complex) element. By having extra 4 missile subs, you can practically eliminate an entire leg of the Triad (e.g. bombers), save a lot of money and actually have MORE deterrence, not less.

Continuous At Sea Deterrence is where it's at.

That's not the same league, it's not even the same sport. Missile Subs and Helo Carrying Landing Ships are two different pairs of shoes with two different types of use and missions.

A few of them are deterrent enough, because nobody is going to risk getting his country blown into the stone age. But on the other hand, if you only have overkill weapons, you won't have the possibilities to deal with weak enemies, and they know that and it might even encourage them when they know that you don't have a lot of possibilities and flexibility to have an edge over him conventionally, because he knows that you won't nuke him, and then he'll be encouraged to skirmish your troops endlessly, even though he knows he will never conquer your country, that might not be his goal, he will just get what land he wants and that's it. The Russian "leaders" are not stupid, they know that they won't fight any superpower, but only small and weak neighbours, and a helo and troop carrier is good for that, while a (or 10 extra) missile sub(s) won't be of any use in a conventional conflict.

BTW, speaking of prices, does this sum include various sunken costs, like R&D, tooling (which might be enormous, given the generally obsolete tooling at many shipyards), prebuilt sections (first two Boreis utilize prebuilt sections from canceled 971 and 949 subs), etc? It looks for me that it does not, and if we include them it might not be all that cheap. Of course, even if that's unit cost, it's still the cheapest boomer I've ever heard. Hell, most SSH are significantly more expensive -- just look at all that Virginia/SeaWolf debacle, 3-4 bn. for a sub, doesn't someone love to eat a bit too much?

BTW, MareCar, aside from the "mere presence" concept there's another one, that of "military parity", and it historically was much bigger on the Soviet and then Russian military planners' books. That's first objection. The second is that in Russian nuclear strategy boomers are retaliatory strike weapons, so the more of them the better, as they need to survive the first strike in sufficient numbers to deal unacceptable damage to the enemy. Many analysts (okay, of an alarmist bend, but they might have a point) believe that even current number of boomers is insufficient for that, and it will go down, as 667BDRs are nearing the end of their operational lifetime, the couple of mothballed 941s look to be written off too, and Boreis are slow to build and still don't have an operational missile.

Both items are purchased from the same fixed budget, so they have to be compared on a cost/benefit basis against each other. Otherwise, you'd have to inflate the military spending each year exponentially.

9 billion rubles was spent on development. That may, or may not include shipyard upgrades. Also, Borei was conceived in late 80s, so part of the funding might have been from the Soviet defense budget. And it most definitely doesn't include Bulava development, which comes at another 15 billion roubles ($500M).

Still, consider that the Trident replacement in UK will cost upward of 20 billion pounds (submarine+missile R&D + 4 submarines + 64 missiles). I mean, holy ****, Russia makes it cheap.

That's not what I meant. You wouldn't compare a BTR-82A with a T-90, or a Mi-17 with a Mi-28.
You can't say "hey, for the price of only 4 BTR-82A I could get a T-90 or for the price of two Mi-17 I could get a Mi-28, and those do more damage to the enemy"....it is not the same thing.
And just because the weapons of one of them make a louder bang, it doesn't mean that the benefit in the cost/benefit analysis is higher, it can just as well be lower.

1 ) What is happening with Yasen SSGN test program , has she started sea trials ?
2 ) I have read that Iskander-M is capable of receiving in flight target data and can change the target on the fly is this true ?
3 ) Does Iskander-M fly hypersonic through out its flight ?

Many Thanks.

Actually there is. You can see a guy with camera making an operational footage. Then they share some parts of it with tv channels. I'd say you can find a real tape of every fsb operation reported in news. This is if you have time, of course.

I, in turn, disagree. Bombers provide flexibility and, most importantly, speed unachievable for subs. Assuming Tu-160 or 95 did fire Kh-555 at target(s) in Georgia... could a sub do it? No. It would take too much time to arrive to AO. Due to its geography, in Russia, bombers are more stealthy than subs. They dont have to pass foreign countries to reach out and touch our neighbors. Again, while I dont discount extreme importance of missile subs, they are not a replacement for bombers or land-based missiles. Mistral-class ships has a place in Russian navy. My argument is very simple, some may call it simplistic, I dont care: Russia is not "special". Russia is not "unique". If other major navies in the world have Mistral-class ships - we should have it too.

Apples and oranges. I'm talking about nuclear deterrence, you are talking about conventional weapons.

As for Mistral, my argument is not one of needs/capabilities, but rather one of cost/benefit. On a cost/benefit basis, an extra Borei offers more value per dollar spent than an extra Mistral.

Although both are useful for the reasons you stated (with which I do not disagree), a Mistral is far too expensive at $708M for the value it offers.

PS: Oh, and it's not like Kh-555 or Kh-101 are actually in service. You still have to do with Kh-55.

Oh, and it's not like Kh-555 or Kh-101 are actually in service. You still have to do with Kh-55.

I read in Yefim Gordon Book ( Russian Airforce and Russian Strategic Aviation ) that Kh-101 and Kh-555 are tested and operational specially the latter to quote from the book

The flight testing of the Kh-101 has already been completed. This missile weighs some 2,200 - 2,400 kg , the weight of warhead is 400 kg. According to press reports, the Kh-101 has a maximum range of 5,000-5,500 Km a variable flight profile at altitudes ranging from 30 - 70m to 6000m , a cruising speed of 190-200 m/s and a maximum speed of 250-270m/s. It can well be classed as a low-observable flying vehicle because the radar cross section of the Kh-101 is 0.01 m2. The missile is equipped with an electro-optical system for correcting the flight trajectory and with a TV guidance system for terminal guidance. This ensures the hitting precision with a deviation of some 12- 20m.

The upgraded Tu-95MS can carry eight Kh-101 missiles on four wing pylons. The same missile will also equip the upgraded Tu-160 which will be able to carry six missiles in each of its two weapons bays total of 12 Kh-101 or 102 missile. The highly accurate guidance system of the Kh-101 and its combined HE/fragmentation/penetrating warhead will enable one modernised Tu-160 to fulfil tasks previously achievable with an entire regiment of bombers. The upgraded version of Tu-22M3 is capable of carrying four Kh-101 missiles or six to eight Kh-SD

I am not sure where are you getting this idea that this Iranian UAV is a copy of Tu-143 Reis.

They look similar to each other that we can say that one has been inspired by the other, but they are hardly copies. In fact, they are incredibly different in aerodynamic theory.

The wing geometry is completely different, control surfaces are completely different, the launch platform is completely different. The only vaguely similar thing is the monocoque missile-like shape of the fuselage.
