Does anyone of you know the name of this music?

it seems almost everybody who has seen this video is looking for the music))) including me))

anyway, the guy who posted it says its Saxomania but supposedly from professional audio collection. i have asked him to post it again without conversations in it but he hasn't responded. now i'm thinking to get a software that will allow me to get rid of that talking, if such exists. :-)

Maybe not in the right thread, but I'm curious about this submarine.

I spotted it Aug 5, 2010, around 1130 GMT, from a ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. She was heading eastwards (to Sankt Petersburg ?)

It she russian ? What type ?

Thank you for your help.

Project 877 "Paltus" diesel-electric submarine, although some people would call it "Kilo class".
I think this one is B-806.

Because it was built in 1924 during the height of constructivism, or art deco period, which drew its inspiration from Egyptian and Mayan architecture (influenced by the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922). Russia was leading in avant-garde architecture at the time because, of course, it was breaking with the past in form and content. Here is, no doubt familar, example of Soviet progressive and inspirational use of deco art:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3008/528999122.jpg
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/4449/769861349.jpg

Eventually, Stalinism put an end to this modernism, ushering an era of the so-called Stalinist neo-classism, familiar from such buildings as the Moscow University (Stalinists gothic skyscrapers).

yes sir they do, but then again, most of them are age range 18-22 I would guess. I don't remember if they are contract servicemen or not. I know a lot of the VDV regiments are. And these are Special Units of the VDV, so I would guess so.

That statue - of the peasant woman and steel worker - used to be on a plinth next to VDNK, a few metres from the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow.

It was taken down a few years ago - I was told for restoration.

Does anyone know what happened to it - and what plans there are to put it back on display ??

The picture you posted was posted sometime ago. And it was more or less to show off newer equipment that they have to choose from (from kevlar and uniform). So no, they are not all equipped like that, but something as to "oooh, look at what we can choose from" aspect. Testing I believe.

That's the thing, every time I see officers on the news now they wear this uniform.

i like it.. closer to heart )

My guess would be increased battlefield security. Snipers and shooters of sorts tend to pick out officers first, so shoulder "pogony" could be compromising.

maybe I'm over-thinking it, maybe there really is not logical explanation...

Originally that statue was created to crown the Soviet pavilion at 1937 World Fair in Paris. Actually, recreated pedestal now mirrors the shape and height of the original structure, which, incidentally, stood just across the street from the German pavilion. Thus the Nazi flag.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/66/La_Tour_Eiffel_en_1937_contrast.png

Also, JFYI, there was mentions above of Seven Sisters being classicist, and art deco decline during the Stalin time, that's not true. While in Stalin's time classicism indeed was encouraged, all those skyscrapers were the stellar examples of the very art deco style that was supposedly in decline. In fact, what declined was constructivism, not art deco -- while both styles were modernist in nature, they has very different origins and flavor, and constructivism was inextricably linked with the turmoil and radical thought of the Twenties, which Stalin, a deeply conservative man, much disliked. Art deco in architecture and design, on the other hand, flourished, for the large part because rapidly modernizing Soviet Union looked after American examples, and US itself were in the grip of that style in the thirties.

Well, the same explanation is used for US (and other NATO countries) uniform's chest rank insignia, so you are right, I guess.

When I photographed it some years ago - it was on a much smaller base - with a small 'lake' in front of it.

The new display looks much better and more imposing.

I was at the Cosmos last August - before the statue was opened.

Next time I go to Moscow, I'll have to check it out.

this is more a question of discipline and whoever is in charge of that chast is not doing a good job at it... there are ways to instill it... in the Soviet army there were always hot heads from Georgia or Caucasus and various parts of Central Asia and commanders still managed...

given how upset some are about the reforms in the military I would even suspect sabotage.... but hey wtf do I know

It's really strange how only (2 million or so alltogether...) Akbar hot folks in the whole country make so much noise.. Why not just not take them in the army at all... like Tsigane/Roma.

What's more surprising is that ordinary soldiers don't stick together and "teach" them some manners. When my father and my uncle served they had similar guys around and they did what had to be done. I don't want to go into details.

Better neo nazis in the army then some 'allah akbar'-idiots

Both are equal scum and they should kill each other.

'allah akbar idiots' from Tatarstan were fighting shoulder to shoulder with slavs in both Chechen campaigns...

There's a difference between ordinary Muslims and "allahu akbar" guys.

A fight between soldiers in one Naro-Fominsk unit (Moscow Region).
Before posting stupid comments on bad/crazy russians pls note that one of the sides in the fight is shouting "Alahu Akbar" (btw they won the fight)
The other side is russians (slavs) as they don't shout such things .
A sad glimpse of reality for those watching too much propaganda on RT or Russian 1st channel .
Its not an unusual thing for those who served. Yes it is ethnic.

It's always been ethnic. Children of the mountains had been a huge discipline problem even in Soviet military. The difference is that now there is uTube and lots of recruits have access to video recording devices with them.

Recruiting our mountain friends for anything but stroy-bat and taking them out of their native regions is idiocy at its best.

It's not about sitting on your ass or waiting for handouts. It's about total lack of infrastructure to support small business and policy geared at actually suffocating any aspiring businessmen. Half of trades people in the West are self-employed business owners - plumbers, truckers, electricians and etc. - and it brings great results.

Government has no interest in strong and confident middle class in Russia. Medvedev talks the talk, but very little has been actually done - either he cannot go around Putin, or it's some kind of bad.cop/good cop type of deal.

Hmmm? How is the piss poor quality of roads and buildings the fault of self employed plumbers and truckers? And if it is the bureaucratic reasons behind it, then why is there a growing middle class? The things that I disagree with in the current situation is that they want to give incentives to people who start 'specific' businesses in specific locations. Why not just give incentives to anyone wanting to start a business period? Or why not give incentives to people who want to start businesses in regions that need the jobs? I am still at question as to how Russian government prevents people from starting small businesses and or service jobs. I never get a full answer, just your standard ones.

Interesting, the helicopter pad is on top of the bridge. First time I see such a design.

It's not that common, but not unheard of for the utility craft, where there's often no place for it on the deck. BTW, from what I've seen about the ship, it's more of an ammo transport or multi-functional collier rather than salvage/rescue tug, which is stated to be only secondary function. That is, there would be provisions for tugging and salvage equipment, but it won't carry it in normal operation.

It's not "fighters", which implies that smoky engines appear on several Russian aircraft, but just on the Mig-29's engine. And the problem has already been solved in the new version of that same engine.

I don't think that "Russian Knights" fly on a mix of piss and diesel, maybe it have something to do with his intakes closed?

And on F-4 it was also due to intakes?

It depends on the engine, simple as that. Maybe little bit on quality of the fuel. But as far as i know F-15 and F-4 use same fuel (JPG-4 or something?) so again, it is because of the engine construction, service etc.

What's the difference in the colors of the numbers? What do blue numbers stand for and what to red numbers stand for? Why the different colors?

AFAIK, the colors don't really mean anything, they are just to distinguish the planes with the same number, as there's no central authority assigning them (it's usually done on the unit level) and there's much overlap -- a large airbase can easily have more than 100 planes/helos, and these numbers are 2-digit.

what does the Gvozdika stand for?

Carnation is the official symbol of GRU and reconnaissance units under GRU command.

The bat, by the way, is not official and non-regulation as are other tigers, lions, boars and other animals on different unit patches.

Back in the 90s there were no real rules about unit patches, so different units got "creative" and devised various animal patches for themselves.

Then the heraldic section of MOD finally decided to "clean the house" and banned all these unofficial animal designs, including the bat.

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to explain. Do you have any information on the previous head of GRU who resigned because of reforms?

Unique video of Naval combat during a five-day war

Video was taken inside of Russian MRK "Mirazh", as I understand these sailors are responsible for engine etc, not missile launches. It was a surprise for them that the main complex was fired.
People, from where I've taken this footage, say that the fence was blasted by the flame from the missile. And an officer is hitting the indicators because as they say small arrows can stuck because of the backblast.

When your own missiles cause that kind of damage to their vessel of origin, it might be time to reconsider your launch system. rofl
The one sailor's continuous pounding of the gauge was reminiscent of the Russian cosmonaut in Armageddon.
Interesting video, thanks for sharing.

so 10 years? So 65billion per year on weapons procurement? That is a lot of money, but still nothing impressive compared to other countries like US and China. On the other hand, if it is directly to just weapons procurement, then I wonder how much they are spending in R&D and other stuff?

my understanding is this amount is strictly for weapons procurement...

there were also reports that Navy is going to get funding separate from this... I'll add sources later

R&D is going to be done by defense companies more and more on their own budget or with govt associated banks credit extended to them on preferential terms.. at least that's the overall goal as far as R&D is concerned

Fricking awesome! This us what was really needed to be done. All they need to do now is start loosening private business laws and start privatizing some smaller state companies.

I find it funny that ppl think that Korabelnikov is somehow belaya ovechka or a white sheep compared to everyone else in the higher echelons of power in Moscow... IMHO he's no better or worse... he may have been a good man but he simply lost the power struggle and had to step down... it's very competitive and brutal up there and all these ppl this high up are acutely aware of that fact... there are no surprises there for anyone and everyone knows the stakes

Nuclear powered i presume?

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/2122/s10r.jpg

Ulyanovsk was supposed to be nuclear-powered. As long as they are not using the catapults, they could even go with gas turbines. Makes the overall project much cheaper.

In my personal opinion, nuclear propulsion on aircraft carriers is overrated. Sure, it gives carriers more endurance, but the reality is that the carrier only moves as fast and as far as the slowest ship in the battle group moves. And unless you are planning to build nuclear destroyers, the carrier battle group will still be limited to the endurance of destroyer/frigate gas/diesel turbines. Steam catapults are only real long-term advantage that nuclear propulsion gives.

As an alternative to Ulyanovsk (project 1143.7), Nevskoye PKB design bureau could resurrect their original nuclear carrier designs from the 60s-70s, Project 1153 and Project 1160.

Nuclear propulsion, steam catapults, no angled deck, 70,000 tons displacement.
