A battalion commander who died after acting as a human shield to protect a soldier from a grenade blast on Wednesday probably saved dozens of lives, an army officer has said.
Major Sergei Solnechnikov pushed the soldier away from a grenade and threw himself over it after it bounced off a trench during training exercises at a Far Eastern military base in the town of Belogorsk.
"I shudder to think about what could have happened had he not done this. There was an entire battalion there; more than 100 people," Sergei Frolov, an officer at the Belogorsk base, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

The negotiator tried to reason with the suspect[An Old Grandpa] asking him to drop his weapon, going inside to talk, even so far as telling the rest of the SOBR/OMSN team to back off when the suspect did comply. However looks like there was a bit of a communications issue as the negotiator was calmly talking with the suspect and establishing himself as the leader while the front officer in the group was yelling at him to get on the ground. It appears like the suspect had another weapon, wounded the negotiator and got himself killed.

I am not getting the principle of it.

I am not getting the principle of it.

I'll try to explain with my limited knowledge.

It's a missile designed to be retrofitted to both surface ships and submarines(As indicated by the ship launching the missile from a port normally reserved for torpedoes.) The ship obviously doesn't have a lot of anti-barbecue measures such as heat pads nor space around the torpedo launchers so they launched the weapon in a torpedo canister away from the ship to avoid the extreme heat from the exhaust.

Now why don't they launch the weapon like a regular missile? The concept of this entire weapon is that if you have torpedo tubes but no infrastructure for Anti ship missiles, you can still launch ASMs without having a separate ASM launching complex.

I may be wrong but is the RPK-6 Vodopad not an ASW. That carries either a 406mm ASW homing torpedo or a nuculear depth bomb like the US ASROC system.

It can serve dual roles as the RU-100 can be also used against surface warships.

I am not getting the principle of it.
It's the outcome of the onetime move to unify the armories of subs and surface ships. RPK-6 Vodopad, also known as PRK-7 Veter and SS-N-16 Stallion, is an ASW missile system, suitable for installation on both surface ships and submarines. RPK-7 is a submarine version, which consists of the 650 mm missile with either 406 mm compact ASW torpedo (which, in a pinch, could also be used against surface ships) or nuclear depth charge. It's normally ejected out of one of the sub's torpedo tubes, gets a target fix, then launches itself towards it, where it drops the warhead on a parachute. RPK-6 is a surface ship version, which uses the same principle, but because few surface ships, if any, had 650 mm tubes, the designers were forced to use 533 mm first stage, which limited the missile's range from 120 km to maybe 40. The strange logic of dropping the missile into the water first was used both to utilize the same parts from RPK-7 (the only difference between them is the 1'st stage diameter, and thus range — you can stuff much more solid fuel into 26" barrel than into 21") and to equip lighter surface combatants with at least some standoff weapon: a torpedo tube is generally a much simpler and more compact device than a missile launcher, as it doesn't need the proofing against hot exhaust etc.

I don't get it.. This video looks fairly new, so I cannot think of Chechania and the foes appears like regular Russians to me! can anyone please give some info about it?

The operation happened over 12 years ago in the general North Caucasus region. Basically rear area operation where MVD troops were tasked with preventing the bandits from sabotaging transportation links. The bandits were blocked in a mountain gorge, however when the troops attempted to assault the criminals, they were met with heavy resistance. The asshats(bandits) used the geography of the terrain to their advantage but the troops found another way to the gorge through a neighboring valley, and sent the bandits to hell.

Heavy Yak 130 certification for combat ?

http://i.imgur.com/7HqIv.jpg

An interesting picture from the National Flight Test Centre of the Ministry of Defense of Russia in Akhtubinsk - it passes the test on the combat use of aircraft Yak-130 (one of the pre-production aircraft, built in 2008, tail number "04 white", serial number 00-04), with impressive combat load of four series of corrected air bombs KAB-500.

Because Yak-130 is quite small/light... therefore 4 KAB-500 (FAB-500 ?) is quite heavy load for such small platform ? Even looking at the picture the bombs look large on that plane.

I think the point is it clearly shows an intention by the Russian Airforce to use the Yak-130 as an attack aircraft. This isnt Yak doing some marketing and photo ops, this is at the Akhtubinsk airforce testing base and using an airforce owned aircraft (rather than a Yak owned testing airframe).

So maybe it will replace some Frogfoot ?

Following Georgia war experience maybe they think Yak-130 would have been better (with better ECM/Jammers/Electronics etc) in complicated SAM environment.

Yeah, looks like that Future CAS aircraft that was minced in the news not long ago will be based on the Yak-130 but I don't think it'll out right be the Yak-130 as we know it now.

The Su-25 is heavily armoured and is meant to get down and dirty with unguided rockets, cluster bombs, and 30mm cannon. The Yak-130 in its current form is simply not able to do this, it is too vulnerable to HMG fire, probably even small arms fire. It is more for dropping guided bombs from medium altitudes. Im not sure that the Yak-130 can be made into a true CAS aircraft. If they just slap on additional armour it is unlikely to be better than the Su-25 which was designed from the outset to be armoured. Yak-130 doesnt even have an inbuilt cannon.

^ But Su-25 loss(es?) in Georgia were due to SAM only no? No so much due to HMG or even AAA fire.

Maybe the new priority even for CAS is better SAM resistance (in a passive way, through modern electronics, ECM suites etc...) more than pure "platform resistance to bullets".

ECM isnt going to save you from an IR guided MANPAD. Better imo to put some DIRCMS on the Su-25. The Su-25 is still more likely to survive a hit from a MANPAD. I remember one got home with a single engine, Yak-130 with a similar hit would have been toast.

Because itself is only 4600kg empty. That means it can carry 65% of its own weight just in weapons. Call me again when the Mig-29 can carry over 7000kg's in weapons. Actually, it carries as much weapons as the Mig-29 can. The Mig-29SMT can also only carry 4 KAB-500 and has less hardpoints for weapons than the Yak-130 (6 vs 8). That means it will be much cheaper to train pilots in precision strike ground attack than before, when you had to use an actual fighter plane, which costs easily 4 times as much for an hour to fly. It also reduces the amount of expensive fighter aircraft needed for smaller airforces. Airforces which 5 years ago may have needed 24 multirole planes could now come by with 12 multirole fighterplanes and 12 light attack trainers. 4 KAB-500 bombs is not a small payload, that's as much as the F-16, Gripen or other similar sized multirole fighters have been carrying in bombing missions for the past 20+ years.

The F-16 already carries an impressive 88% of its empty weight as weapons (altough it has no space to actually hang that much stuff onto one, in reality it can carry as much as a Mig-29K).

Both of those aspects are needed. Ability to absorb a SAM hit and make it home is just too juicy to let go in favor of purely active protection suites. Sitting in a titanium bathtub is mighty nice as well, so is the cockpit glass that stops 23mm shells in their tracks.

Which begs a question of why Su-25 needs to be replaced with a lighter and more fragile aircraft, as opposed to simply updating its avionics package, updating the airframe with newer composites whenever possible, and maybe tweaking the engines for more economy. It's one of the few aircraft that just doesn't seem to age, partially due to the excellent design with 20 years of refinement through real combat and partially due to the types of missions it does.

Single-seaters were built at Tblisi, two-seaters were built at Ulan-Ude.

With the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia lost its Su-25 production and had to re-instate it inside Russia.

Same with Antonov in the Ukraine - although not as critical.

Yak-130 share with its diverse twin Airmacchi M-346 the fact that is probably they are the only possible choice when it come to train pilot for 4,5 and 5gen fighters as Golden Eagle is waaay too expensive on that matter.
About its use as an attack aircraft, it is quite clear it can't substitute Su-25 in its actual role, like F-16 can't make same things A-10 usually do , but Yak can make about same things F-16 or Rafale usually do in A2G mission, expecially if it would have Jdam bomb and laser guided bomb.

I'm not an aesthetical guy. It looks shorter when collapsed, while the one on the AK-12 prototype seems to be full lenght even when collapsed, and can only get longer. I don't think I have to explain what this means in the end. It also looks more ergonomical overall, and probably has better controls/buttons than the one on the AK-12. I also like the material better than the harder, glossy plastic, which at least to me looks more ****e to cracks after harder exploitation.

Ah yes, that is why they have ordered 48 of them and will order 48 or so more. Good job at failing.

I also like the material better than the harder, glossy plastic, which at least to me looks more ****e to cracks after harder exploitation.

well, for starters, Zenith make pretty sturdy and solid stuff, and a fact that specialist spent more than 300 bucks (price of that particular stock is 10000rur) on this one is good enough of recomendation for me.

Fair enough points gentlemen. I appreciate the awnsers i have received from the both of you.

Pig Vomit, nothing more, move along. Also there is no "Best" that's just a label fanboys of all creeds make to attempt to justify "Supremacy." There are Aircraft that are advanced with a myriad of incredible attributes that fit into the doctrine of their nation's armed forces, best is so childish.

Russia says alot of things.

You made the statement that the Russian MoD can not afford to get more SU-35s, however according to this:

The head of Vnesheconombank (VEB), Vladimir Dmitriyev, announced at the air show on Tuesday that the national development bank would grant Sukhoi a 3.5 billion-ruble ($109 million) loan to start mass production of Su-35 jets.

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20090818/155845491.html
Russia has payed Sukhoi for the manufacturing of the fighters with a single Bank Note, which means they can afford to buy so many SU-35s upfront and now Sukhoi has to be able to meet that quota, so ergo your statement that they can't afford to buy many more SU family planes (particularly SU-35s) is total rubbish.

Not to mention already delivered brand-new Su-27SM3s, Su-30M2s and MiG-29SMTs, Russian MoD has currently ordered around 300+ combat jets, to be precisely.

Su-34 - 124
Su-35S - 48 (plus 48 more coming after 2015, to be delivered along with PAK FA's T-50)
Su-30SM - 30 (with an option contract for 10 more)
MiG-29K/KUB - 24
Yak-130 - 62
Su-25UBM - 16 (with an option contract, to be operated along with modernized Su-25SM/SM2s)

Of course there will be more contracts signed. It's just the beginning.

Actually they didn't say BTR could destroy tank, but that operator could destroy tanks optics, additional fuel cans, radio antennas. Maybe they want to say, that good operator with its new FCS could hit vulnerable object on tanks.

Tanks have plenty of weak spots that could be pretty damaging if hit. Optics, fuel tanks, engine bay, the main gun, Obviously a 30mm cannon cant penetrate into the crew compartment, but it can cause enough damage on the outside to take the tank out of combat. You may need some luck and for the tank to be looking the other way/catch it my surprise though.

Hi friends. I thought I will make a post about this in off-topic, but because this is movie about Russian armed forces involvement in Georgia war, I thought instead I would post here.

This is the making of the movie 8th of August. The Russian story. In Russian his film is called "
Август. Восьмого"

PLEASE. ***Do not discuss your opinion of war or movie here***

It's okay, metberkut wanted to be cool and ignore the request that I made. All I wanted to show was behind the scenes pictures, it interested me because of all the tanks, BTR's, guns, and so on.

Sorry, i misunderstood your request. Thanks for posting anyway.

It's surprisingly not SO bad

It is out? Personally it looks very clishe to me. Like that Georgian movie about the war, just opposite. I will STFU now. :)

It mixes Bondarchuks pretty well made fight imagery (as seen in his earlier 9 Рота) with an artsy fartsy thing involving a young boys vivid imagination (robots and space and stuff). Great visuals, a somewhat cheesy story and an odd spin on war films. I don't know, it's watchable but pretty weird. :D I am very much looking forward to his Stalingrad though.

is it 6B7-1? And why the hell russian helmets are so big and loose? Doesn't it defeat it's purpose ?
They're so big so you can wear a hat underneath in winter. And, given that the webbing inside is adjusted correctly, they aren't loose. It's just that many commanders don't insist on prober fitting, maybe because they don't know about it themselves, or just don't care.

OMON&SOBR&Police. Real video

Lot of icebreaker pics coming up..

Amazing post, very interesting! Keep posting photos if you have more. I noticed some of them like Russia they had even 76mm gun, 30mm gutling guns in CIWS role and Fregat (?) radar. It seems not any more according to the photos..

IIRC, they still are designed with foundations for them, so they could be armed on a short notice. After all, to be able to use your nuclear icebreakers as auxiliary cruisers is always an asset. Now imagine putting a couple of sets of containerized Club missiles on the deck an instant icebreaker CGN! ;)

Well ever tryed to wear it over ushanka? Thta's why, having "winter" and "summer" helmets are too expensive.
Thanks for the answer, but it doesn't make any sense! I do have ushanka- problem is - can't hear a **** with it and it feels like i am wearing a dog on my head. Can't even imagine what is like with helmet on it.
What about helmet winter liner, jack pyke and polar balaclava? Works well in -25 with old PASGT and MICH.
And i bet it's even cheaper to make all them than a posh ushanka as that i only spent 20 euros for that stuff(without military discount). Plus it's much more better too - don't need to have a big kastriulia. Poor soldier with that helmet has a bigger profile than t-90.

Not really. A summer suit (rightmost) costs, IIRC, some 1920 RUR or ~$64. Three more suits (rain suit, soft shell suit and extreme cold suit) will set you back maybe some 300 bucks more. Throw in a fleece jacket and windbreaker, and two sets of thermals, and you'll get $500-600 for the full set. Certainly more expensive than old ХБ, but much, much better. Have you ever tried working in cotton long johns in -30? Not a pleasant experience by any stretch. BTW, a modern synthetic socks and balaclava (which you can roll up into a beanie hat) are included in the set.

That's just an officialeze for balaclava. This means that you can roll and stretch is whatever you want, but normally it would cover your face.

Just saw a transit column of various TELs (St. Petersburg, probably some parade rehearsal or whatever) and noticed something never seen before by me - Tochka-like vehicle with something large covered on it's "****", looked like a bigass radar turret or Pantsir assembly. Couldn't photo it, and google didn't yield anything either. What's that could be?

Most likely. Not exact but very similar, as if this "turret" was in "transportation" mode, collapsed and moved forward a bit (inbetween first and middle axles, not straight above the middle)
