Hi! I just made a visual recognition table for "Tigr" series armored vehicles:
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/1907/tigrseriesen.jpg
Generally, rule is: main models in first column, modifications of that models - to the right from them. Arrows is for the explanation of model genesis in complex cases.
Hope it would be useful.

There is almost complete interoperability between S-400 and S-300 in terms of the different components.

At 1:00, 30N6E2 appears, and behind it there is a S-400 launcher. Is 30N6E2 actually used within S-400 battery?

That's why I do not like the videos that are hard to understand without the text.
In the beginning - there show the control center S-400, and after 1.00 - the deployment of S-300.

AttilaA

But isn't the TEL which appears behind 30N6E2 an 5P85T2, on a BAZ chassis? Only S-400s are deployed with 5P85T2 on BAZ chassis in Russian army, no? And 30N6E2 itself are component of S-300PMU2, which is for export only, AFAIK.

So if it is a S-400 battery, since when are 30N6E2 used within S-400 batteries, and if it isn't, then since when are Russian army deploying 5P85T2 TEL's on BAZ chassis and 30N6E2 with S-300s?

Just wanted to let you Russkies in on something. Those armor transport trucks. You loaned us quite a few of them for Desert Storm. I asked someone what they were when I noticed the red star on the side of the door. A officer smiled and mentioned how the Russkies really like us and wanted to help. Yet, elements of your government put on a nice show and said otherwise to the media. Funny that the truth is rarely reported.

It's called Realpolitik, man. The national interests, the interests of government, the matters of internal politics and the government official line are four different things and in most cases they are definitely not the same. Take Jordan. For the long, long time the country was spouting the same hardline anti-Israel rhetorics like other Arab countries, while having generally a pretty amiable relationship and a lot of mutually profitable business deals with the very same Israel.

Funny how you try to insert politics into a photo thread.

There is a section of MP.net reserved for political threads, don't pollute this one, also not everyone who posts or contributes to this thread is a Russian or of Russian Heritage so drop the generalization: "...you Russkies..." Twice the Russian Federation helped the US in the middle east. First as you said it was in desert storm, later Putin made sure to give as much assistance as possible to your invasion of Afghanistan.

Sadly both times the US said thank you very much and continued to play harsh politics against the Russian Federation, and thus two overtures of cooperation were lost in the sands of time.

The difference between the latter versions of the 2A46 gun is mainly in increased lifespan of the barrel and better accuracy/lower dispersion. I think with the 2A46M-1 the max barrel pressure was significantly increased over the 2A46M and earlier variants, but from then on the improvements have been in accuracy and barrel lifetime.

Thanks, but i am looking for visual differences. Here is the info i have found:

"The gun is wrong.Zvezda gives the 2A46M gun (similar to the T-72). That's ok for first T-90 built in 90ies, but not for the weldet turret. Here we need a newer 2A46M-5, those have the front heatprotection cover shorten (due to the slack control system mounted on the gun head)"

As i am not a tank guy, "front heatprotection cover" doesnt say much to me.

Best thing is to compare pictures of the two models. You will notice that indeed that the T-90A has a shorter thermal sleeve at the front of the barrel, which results in a slightly longer "*****" part at the very front (the muzzle). Note that on many tanks, this thermal sleeve is missing though.

Another thing I noticed is that export tanks apparently retained the original gun. So if you want to build for example an Indian 'T-90MS' you can use the kit's barrel.

Thank you so much for the info! I had very few T-90 pics on my HD, and i was just not sure what to look for. On planes my eye is much better trained, and i know what to look for. So, to fix this issue you have to sandwich a piece of barrel between the muzzle and the gun to make it slightly longer.

Export T-90s do not "retain" the old gun. Production of welded turrets for T-90 was opened for Indian tanks before than it did for Russian. 2A46-M5 gun entered service in 2005 when T-90A was started. Newer exported T-90s (for eg Algeria) I believe are equiped with the newer gun. Not sure about India though, because of the "license production" mess.

Also, it is not T-90MS, but regular Indian T-90 "Bishma"

Export T-90s do not "retain" the old gun. Production of welded turrets for T-90 was opened for Indian tanks before than it did for Russian. 2A46-M5 gun entered service in 2005 when T-90A was started. Newer exported T-90s (for eg Algeria) I believe are equiped with the newer gun. Not sure about India though, because of the "license production" mess.

To me it looks as if the Algerian tanks have the original gun. Same for the ones that Turkmenistan got. The point I was trying to make is that Zvezda's kit is not per se wrong because there are also T-90As with the old gun. It's not about who got the welded turrets first and what not.

You are right, it's a T-90MS, not T-90S (although it's hard to see that the turret is a welded one when seen from the front). But this picture shows that the export version of the T-90A still has the original gun.

It's a T-90AS. The one with the welded turret is the T-90A, the one with the cast turret was the T-90. The T-90MS is the new one with the new turret.

Fascinating recollection of the Lunokhod program, the story of thesecret remote robots Russia built and operated on the Moon's surfacemore than three decades ago.

Thank you for posting this show.

Alex Kemurdjian and Sergei Korolev are surely two of my most favorite people.

Kemurdjian was not only responsible for the first (and still only) automated Moon rovers, but also created the first Mars rover as well. His small rover Marsokhod actually made it to the surface successfully on the Soviet 1971 Mars lander although the lander failed. He led a team that introduced the virtues of a Mars rover to the world in the Society's international testing program in the late 1980s. His work has had extraordinary influence on robotic designs in the USA and Europe as well as in Russia.

Here are some photos showing the results of 4 Tu-22M3 bombing the landing *****s at Kopitnari, Georgia. About 100 unguided bombs were used, most likely FAB-250. There were 5 impacts on the landing *****. The maximum length of undamaged runway is 1.5 km

The Link is a photo of NATO air strikes against a Serbian airbase in 1999, for comparison. They were done by a single B-2 Spirit using 6 GBU-31 JDAM. Maximum length of undamaged runway after bombing is 500m.

Just an interesting comparison of where the VVS is in comparison to the the USAF

Very interesting. Thanks for that. Have lessons been learned? Or russia did not expect to fight a conventional war at the time. Mind you being stealth gives one liberty to approach at perfect angle along runway not across runway.

When in doubt, dump them in bulk. Runway attacks are notoriously difficult to pull off without precision guided bombs, even with dangerous low level runs with things like BetAB or Durandal bombs.

I doubt the B-2 was even within visual range of the runway. At high altitude and good clip of speed, JDAM has a decent standoff range. No flying over the runway.

I understand but still stealth has time to adjust approach without fear of getting shot down. Remember one Tu22 lost prior to this attack. Still I thought jdams are dropped and falling back and adjusting during fall. Standoff implies a gliding function if not powered.

I think it was done earlier in the 5 Day war, I guess from the Russian point of view it was cheaper to use a handful of unguided bombs then high precision guided bombs, and looking at the photos they seemed to do just as good of a job.

Cheaper of course. For the targeted enemy yes like using B-52 to drop bombs in afghanistan where there was no ground threat. Naturally if USA thought there is no threat from the serbian airfield they also would have sent a b-52. Not exactly like for like comparison.

Those 6 JDAMs probably cost 10x the price of all of the bombs dropped by the Tu-22Ms on the runway. But anyway, you use what you have, and right now the VVS has thousands of tons of unguided bombs, and very few guided ones.

Marsokhod was not an actual machine but a would-be plan as its heavier carrier, Mars 4NM/5NM would have needed more powerful launch vehicle, N1(which launched itself together with Soviet moon landing program into oblivion), than any previous Soviet space rockets.

True (and not to derail the thread) but you also have to factor in things like fuel (4 Tu-22M3s vs 1 B-2), manpower, etc. As far as PGMs go JDAM kits are relatively cheap. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say the only reason there aren't widespread equivalents in Russian service is because a lack of need.

Back on topic, ISTR reading somewhere that the P-700 system was being retired. Given that the Kirovs, Oscars, and Kuznetsov all use the system is this correct? Or are they planned to remain in service for the foreseeable future?

The missile is no longer in production (the motor was manufactured in Ukraine IIRC), so the system will be retired as the shelf life of the current stock dissipates.

As for the platforms, the plan is to get rid of the launchers on Kuznetsov altogether to allow for more hangar space. On Kirov and the SSGNs, the plan is to replace Granit launchers for a new VLS with quadpacked Oniks/Brahmos or Club missiles. That's just the plan, though.

PS: sorry for no pics in photo thread. Posting from iPhone, so can insert a placeholder image of some random missile. 8)

I think it's for ECM gear.

It also now contains an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) - the new black Su-34's have it - check out the intake grille on the port side of the rear boom - plus the exhaust at the extreme rear end - above the white radar antenna.

Further forward is the brake parachute housing - and there is probably fuel in there as well.

P-700 is out of production. Admiral Nakhimov seem will be getting Onix instead of P-700. Kuznetsov perhaps also. As far as oscars I think they'll probably carry sP-700 until the end.

Excellent! Completely forgot about it, but wish i had asked you about a small request; to try to take pic of MiG-29UB 9-53 ("SMT'fied" UB) topside and cockpit. I have never seen either of that, and plane have been in service for a while... IIRC 9-53 b/n 39 did some flying during press tour.

I saw someone talking about the american police using Saiga-12 shotgun. Now keep in mind here in the USA each police department (thousands) buys whatever they want. But most carry M4's havent seen to many MP5's they seem to have died out. Some department even let you purchase your own rifle for use. But at this time, I know thats what the artical says but I have not seen one in service on the eastern seaboard of the USA. But I am sure that some department likes what they see and have bought some of them for their officers.

Uh-uh-uh... and "thermal" - what's this??? Physically?

The problem is, we need agreed-on terms to understand each other. In the current language "IR Sight" and "Thermal Vision Sight" mean two DIFFERENT devices, using different physical principles. IR sights (which were first used back in WWII, actually) typically use light amplifiers with a near IR spectral maxima, and thus require external illumination, while thermal vision sights use different type of sensors able to see an intrinsic IR radiation of an object. They are MUCH more sensitive and thus appeared only some 20 years ago. Thus it is more correct to differentiate between the two.

What issues with Poliment ?
Before I heard that there are some issues with the creation of the Poliment radar due to the merge of Almaz and Antey. The Altair department which was in charge of designing the new radar for the ship-Poliment lost many experienced personnel. As a result it lead to difficulty and delays in creating the Poliment radar for the 22350.

Well not mentioning the obvious cgi rendering which has subtle but very tattle tale signs, do you actually think they used 3 different camera planes or had the same plane in 3 different locations for the missile firing?. Look at the light, shadow effect and texture..

IR sight and Thermal Vision sight are one and the same thing, you are complicating a very simple idea, they are both IR apparatus, the difference between one and the other is one is active the other one is passive, active requires the outsorce of IR light, the passive uses a cooling chamber for imaging (and there is another way to view objects at night, in a passive way, by amplifying ambient light sources)
if you want to get technical about the terms your explenation is sufficient but like I said it just complicates a very easy idea, passive/active ;)
so which one is mounted on the MG in the picture?

Well, you're saying basically exactly what I've said only in less technical terms. ;) Shakhin sight is passive, and doesn't require external illumination, and that's what makes it so eagerly awaited. Before it, all (at least rifle-mounted) Soviet/Russian night scopes required at least some external illumination, so they either announced their presence to everyone by their IR lights, or needed a clear starry night to function. Passive sights were long used (albeit in somewhat low numbers) on vehicles, but they either used a large and heavy Russian-made sensors, or were imported. So this scope is also a proof that Russian-made IR sensors progressed to the point that they could be mounted on a gun, rather than on a vehicle.

If you look closer, you'll see that it differs noticeably from other "Redut"-armed ships, which constitute an intermediate design so to say. The most vidsible difference is the lack of the aft mast above the chopper hangar, and single integrated mainmast that no more includes separate open shelves for artillery and navigation radars. You can also see SAM launchers abaft of the boat mounts and a small radome on the hangar. It also has some internal differences, mainly for improving habitability: as such the 20380 ships are ill-suited for long missions, because, for example, they don't have a proper galley, only a sort-of "reheating station" for the prepacked meals, and the regulations limit the voyage length without the fresh meals for two weeks max, IIRC. 20385 ships will have real galleys to feed their crews freshly prepared food every day.

So the endurance is increased now ? By how much ? What about the range ?

Some sources (notably RIA) presented this ship as the first of the new cass 20385. Should it not be the second unit of this class after the "Provorvyy" laid down last year ?

There is no "Provorny". The ship laid down last year, in May 2011, is the same ship they had the ceremony for on Feb 2012.

Read what I said before, please. The ship, "Gremiaschy", has already been laid down in 2011, in Feb 2012 was only the ceremony.

Thank you for sharing this... One of the biggest concerns people on this forum always bring up is the fact that the Russian's are still plagued by have bad/slow exit-routes on their APCs... But this just shows it's all in the training of the fighting force using the equipment. Not saying the BMP-3 is the best for crew-comfort and exits, but it works well for what it is designed for. To get the troops withing firing/marching distance to the enemy in one piece and at a decent speed.

also on the video, that was 6 fully combat loaded troops disembarking in under 10 seconds... Not too shabby for an old Soviet-designed armored-can... While simultaneously firing its 30mm auto-cannon and 100mm main-gun... I don't think this is the worst solution for the troops diving into a gun-fight... Whats a better alternative? A jeep? ...

really poor specs .. Why Russians went from the great fregat to the furke ??

It's only used on small ships. It's more like a replacement for Pozitiv.

There is no replacement for Fregat yet (even Gorshkov class uses a new version of Fregat).

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/1786/irnev.jpg (http://img826.imageshack.us/i/irnev.jpg/)

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8053/n1njj.jpg (http://img684.imageshack.us/i/n1njj.jpg/)

A better question is: why is Furke used on Project 20380 corvettes? Here is the answer: 20380 was intended to be a cheap small mass production littoral missile ship. Pozitiv/Furke type radar is fine in this mode.

However, over time, it started to suffer from mission creep and capability creep. Admirals want everything to be a wunderwaffe, so now 20380/20385 is more like an undersized overpowered mini-frigate. And Furke is too weak for all the capabilities such a ship is supposed to have. That is the problem, not the Furke itself.

Since nobody really knows what the hell this new "integrated optronic mast" is going to have, I will refrain from speculating.

In any case, it is one thing to replace a fire control radar , it is another thing to replace a search radar. They might just replace FCS with some phased array, but keep Furke as the search radar. On 20380, Furke serves as both fire control and search, but it is not designed for fire control, which is why it sucks.
