What is with the ERA blocks and the open gap between the gun and the era? Or lack of side skirts?

Dark Avenger
03-19-2012, 04:23 PM
The skirts are often removed in training to make access to the suspension easier for maintenance and prevent the accumulation of snow, mud and debris. The gaps in ERA coverage can be partly explained by the removal of the Luna IR searchlight formerly located to the right of the gun. But still, too much of the turret front is left uncovered.

Note that the guy wears an old-fashioned high collar tunic instead of the regulation jacket. That, strictly speaking, is against regs, but still a popular practice, especially among submariners.

Some of the photographers shown in this thread should go teach Lockheed Martin how to take pictures. Go looking for decent F-35 or F-22 pics and all you get is a bunch of high res, grainy, blurry $hit. Some of the pics here are the sharpest, clearest aircraft pics I've ever seen.

My memory tells me 1 photo was from 2nd Chechen War, soldier had one leg up on higher ground, looking down sights, while hold PKM up to his shoulder. Also I had photos of training exercise of various VDV & Army units where Soldiers were in slow run mode with PKM's up at their shoulders, one photo even had the catch moment where soldier fired weapon. I just want to see those photos again, I loved them. My google searching is not giving me anything close, maybe I am not use the correct keywords.

Thanks

This is almost similar to one that I had, but I had them in full standing position.

It's because most people don't distinguish between other branches that do semi-extensive water training. Try searching You Tube for "SEAL" training you will probably run across a few videos from Army and Marines training in the water...

Great video, HRH. Even though it has been done in Hollywood style and is a great ad for the VDV, it rocks.

Hollywood style tearjerking works. That's why the ad is so good - slighly overdramatic narrative coupled with great visuals.

Now they have to come up with decent 1 minute ad videos, where the viewer is bombarded with imagery of soldiers doing cool things coupled with some CGI, topped with a manly slogan at the end.

I tried the dry rations back in 2011. It looks like since then they introduced new packaging and some new contents, but I can still recognize most of the stuff in there. There is def. some tasty food (jelly, yum yum); wouldn't rate it overall as anything too special though. Personally I prefer the British Army rations.

Not really new, as the first experimental runs started field-testing back in the Second Chechen campaign, but still a relatively recent introduction. And the producers constantly tinker with the contents, adding this, removing that, and so on. BTW, the stuff inside is for the most part normal commercial canned food you can buy in any supermarket, just specifically produced and packaged under MO's requirements.

I would like to ask about the history of 'ZSh-1' helmet. When was it introduced ? I read that it was developed in the 1990s. However I saw pictures of such helmets being used by special units of East German as well as Czechoslovakian police in the 80s. The only difference is that the Czechoslovakian ones had a transparent face cover and a communications module. Maybe these were previous versions of 'Zsh-1' ?

I'm confused about it. I will be grateful for an answer :)

SM did experience small cockpit changes, but nothing large enough to be called SM2. So, there is no real SM2 frames. There is 48 SM's, and 12 SM3's and that is it. I was referring to bort number 56 which was the original test plane for the SM version. It was also later modified to serve as test plane for SM3 modification.

Hahaha. It does that. If you cross into Greece or close to the border then SMS "welcome to Greece", if close to Albania "welcome to albania", once I had the phone on and landed in Sydney and said "welcome to Australia" and got a call from Macedonia direct.

Gentlemen, I received a lot of positive feedback and cookies after my first release of Su-34 Grey photos into public domain. I think, it could be a good tradition to release into the public domain some of the good photos took during interesting events.

This Monday I visited the first rehearsal of the Victory Day Parade. I was able to take a short walkaround of Topol-M TEL and want to share with you. All photos are in pure original resolution 5616x3744 without editing and watermarks. I release these photos posted below into the public domain. Use them for any purpose, without any conditions.

Gentlemen, I received a lot of positive feedback and cookies after my first release of Su-34 Grey photos into public domain.

Thank you very much for the photos, but is this really a good idea?

Public domain is a very broad area. People might potentially use your photos for things you might not approve of and you will have absolutely no say about it. Wouldn't something like "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike" be a smarter choice? It would have the same practical effect, while retaining you some basic rights.

You can choose whichever license suits you: http://creativecommons.org/choose/

It's up to you in the end, but I'm just saying, "public domain" can be iffy.

Agreed, you are right, there could be a problem. I'm a lawyer here in Russia, so I was thinking about that before. Usually I release my pics under CC Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs, in some cases I accept CC Attribution-ShareAlike.
According Rus Civil Code even if the work is in public domain, the author still has a right for the name and a right for protection of personal reputation. It's illegal to use the work in the way that could damage author's reputation or interests. I'm not sure, but some of foreign copyright laws could have the same thing. But still I weighed all pros and cons and realized the possible risks.

Thanks for sharing this, dzhage-dzhaga!
I agree with you. You have to make a decission to publish things from the very beginning. If you are doing it and the picture made it into the Internet every aspects of "copy right" are simply ridiculous in my opinion because within an hour you have hundreds of print screens or downloads. And then people handle it different. Some mention the original source some not. Some start to manipulate or work with the picture. What to do? To follow every user in the world? He would argue that he found it slightly "manipulated" "somewhere" and forgot where.
If (!) someone decides to publish it in Internet he simply give it to everybody. That's a fact. So your decission was to share it. And thank you for that. There are hundereds of pictures of SS-27 stuff but this is really high quality! Thanks

Can't speak for the poster of the pics, but it's not always about money. Sometimes it's just the desire to put something interesting out there for people to enjoy.

Aye. I agree with free usage of pics, but I think his work at least needs some degree of protection. I'm just worried about the event of someone trying to mark those pics as taken by him, and sell with some **** watermarks on them as vitaly released them 'for any purposes without any conditions'.

Agreed. All these copyright rules don't work in the web, but that doesn't care me much. Chinese web is a clear example. So when I posted something in the web even with the watermark on the photo, I already said goodbye. I understood that and accepted the consequences. After all I'm fully for free sharing in the web.
So I only expect and set hopes upon users honesty in attribution of my work.

Probable, but it could happen with all my photos even with logos.
I really appreciate you care about my work. Seriously, that's great you liked my pics. But we can't protect the images on the Web. Maybe then it's better to share them for own free will and receive respect points :) and 80-lvl of military photographer

Hi all,

I was just wondering, if I'm going to reenact the Spetsnaz Alfa Group, which was under FSB, in action in Dagestan, which flag patch should I use as flag patch on my left shoulder?

This one?

176106

Also, I found this

176107

The Cyrilic on the seal read 'Sluzba Bezopasnosti' (pardon if my spelling was wrong, I'm still a basic russian learner) which is supposedly the 'SB' part from 'FSB' so, I assume that it's worn by the FSB so I hereby ask where do the FSB officer or operator place this patch on? Left or right sholder? On which uniform, field or office? And in what occassion?

Why do I ask it here, not some airsoft-reenactor fan site? Well, first, I have no membership there, and second, I can expect a more precise and accurate answer here where military analysts and even actual operator gathers.

Thank you all in advance.

Not really. The current vehicle platforms in the works:

Tracked:
* Heavy (up to 65 tons) Armata
* Medium (up to 25 tons) Kurganets

Wheeled:
* Medium (up to 25 tons) Boomerang
* Light (up to 10 tons) (Boomerang-10?)

All four of them are independently developed, though supposedly designed from the ground up to be compatible that is, use the same parts and combat modules.

Okay, twower's to the rescue. The armored car of the above is not, I repeat, IS NOT from any MoD vehicle programs. It is most probably an Internal Ministry light squad car, codename Ansyr, four tons loaded weight. 120 kph top speed, amphibious, armored against 7.62 AP round and .5 kg TNT under the bottom/wheel. Another possibility — a somewhat heavier car codenamed Antigradient, eight tons, protection from 12.7 AP and 7 kg TNT.

Doubtful at very least. 'Ansyr' supposed to be amphibious. That thingy clearly not.

Not project Ansyr, but probably Antigradient, same characteristics as Ansyr, but heavier - up to 8 metric tons

March 19, 2012 was the first rehearsal for the Victory Day Parade at the training ground in Alabino. Since the end of February troops and vehicles from various units and formations of the Armed Forces began arriving to Alabino training ground. The first rehearsal included only military vehicles. Parade participants have group training for the event in a fairly rigid schedule, three times a week before lunch with breaks for parsing errors. In mid-April, troops will be relocated to the Khodynskoe pole in Moscow for rehersals on the streets of Moscow.

During the ride the average speed of vehicles is 12 km/h, the distance depending on the type of vehicle from 12 to 15 meters.
This year almost 95 vehicles of different types are involved in the Parade: GAZ Tigr, BTR-80, T-90, Msta-S, Buk-M2, Pantsir-S1, S-400, Iskander-M and Topol-M. Compared with last year we won't see Smerch MLRS.

Where did you find brass here? That's no brass, that's typical Russian mild steel case with olive drab laquering.

A battalion commander who died after acting as a human shield to protect a soldier from a grenade blast on Wednesday probably saved dozens of lives, an army officer has said.
Major Sergei Solnechnikov pushed the soldier away from a grenade and threw himself over it after it bounced off a trench during training exercises at a Far Eastern military base in the town of Belogorsk.
"I shudder to think about what could have happened had he not done this. There was an entire battalion there; more than 100 people," Sergei Frolov, an officer at the Belogorsk base, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai.

The negotiator tried to reason with the suspect[An Old Grandpa] asking him to drop his weapon, going inside to talk, even so far as telling the rest of the SOBR/OMSN team to back off when the suspect did comply. However looks like there was a bit of a communications issue as the negotiator was calmly talking with the suspect and establishing himself as the leader while the front officer in the group was yelling at him to get on the ground. It appears like the suspect had another weapon, wounded the negotiator and got himself killed.

I am not getting the principle of it.

Hisroyalhighness
04-01-2012, 03:36 PM
I am not getting the principle of it.

I'll try to explain with my limited knowledge.

It's a missile designed to be retrofitted to both surface ships and submarines(As indicated by the ship launching the missile from a port normally reserved for torpedoes.) The ship obviously doesn't have a lot of anti-barbecue measures such as heat pads nor space around the torpedo launchers so they launched the weapon in a torpedo canister away from the ship to avoid the extreme heat from the exhaust.

Now why don't they launch the weapon like a regular missile? The concept of this entire weapon is that if you have torpedo tubes but no infrastructure for Anti ship missiles, you can still launch ASMs without having a separate ASM launching complex.
