It's surprisingly not SO bad

It's okay, metberkut wanted to be cool and ignore the request that I made. All I wanted to show was behind the scenes pictures, it interested me because of all the tanks, BTR's, guns, and so on.

I'll only say that these babies can **** up any enemy, without the fancy computer targetting.

That's Zvezda TV camera. they are always getting a dozen of them to any trip. in military press only Zvezda and RIA use GoPro, except of course some special events like Parade or something

Well ever tryed to wear it over ushanka? Thta's why, having "winter" and "summer" helmets are too expensive.

It is out? Personally it looks very clishe to me. Like that Georgian movie about the war, just opposite. I will STFU now. :)

It mixes Bondarchuks pretty well made fight imagery (as seen in his earlier 9 Рота) with an artsy fartsy thing involving a young boys vivid imagination (robots and space and stuff). Great visuals, a somewhat cheesy story and an odd spin on war films. I don't know, it's watchable but pretty weird. :D I am very much looking forward to his Stalingrad though.

They're so big so you can wear a hat underneath in winter. And, given that the webbing inside is adjusted correctly, they aren't loose. It's just that many commanders don't insist on prober fitting, maybe because they don't know about it themselves, or just don't care.

OMON&SOBR&Police. Real video

Lot of icebreaker pics coming up..

Amazing post, very interesting! Keep posting photos if you have more. I noticed some of them like Russia they had even 76mm gun, 30mm gutling guns in CIWS role and Fregat (?) radar. It seems not any more according to the photos..

IIRC, they still are designed with foundations for them, so they could be armed on a short notice. After all, to be able to use your nuclear icebreakers as auxiliary cruisers is always an asset. Now imagine putting a couple of sets of containerized Club missiles on the deck an instant icebreaker CGN! ;)

Indeed, it could be a smart solution! ;)

And as we speak about icebrakers, let's enjoy some videos..

Well ever tryed to wear it over ushanka? Thta's why, having "winter" and "summer" helmets are too expensive.
Thanks for the answer, but it doesn't make any sense! I do have ushanka- problem is - can't hear a **** with it and it feels like i am wearing a dog on my head. Can't even imagine what is like with helmet on it.
What about helmet winter liner, jack pyke and polar balaclava? Works well in -25 with old PASGT and MICH.
And i bet it's even cheaper to make all them than a posh ushanka as that i only spent 20 euros for that stuff(without military discount). Plus it's much more better too - don't need to have a big kastriulia. Poor soldier with that helmet has a bigger profile than t-90.

Not really. A summer suit (rightmost) costs, IIRC, some 1920 RUR or ~$64. Three more suits (rain suit, soft shell suit and extreme cold suit) will set you back maybe some 300 bucks more. Throw in a fleece jacket and windbreaker, and two sets of thermals, and you'll get $500-600 for the full set. Certainly more expensive than old ХБ, but much, much better. Have you ever tried working in cotton long johns in -30? Not a pleasant experience by any stretch. BTW, a modern synthetic socks and balaclava (which you can roll up into a beanie hat) are included in the set.

And can someone translate "шлем для защиты лица" what in hell is it? Face helmet..????
That's just an officialeze for balaclava. This means that you can roll and stretch is whatever you want, but normally it would cover your face.

Looks to me like the original BTR-80 turret but with the bigger gunner's sight and PL-1, which makes it a late production BTR-80 ("model 2008").

Looks to me like the original BTR-80 turret but with the bigger gunner's sight and PL-1, which makes it a late production BTR-80 ("model 2008").

Says the master :). Thanks for the correction.

Yes...
Now it looks even funny - "red revolutionary trousers" and bad leather jacket. But these people were able to fight much better than many of today's, in the "trendy camouflage".
People had a belief...

Cossack Konstantin Nedorubov - for the battle actions against Wrangel was awarded the "revolutionary red trousers." History of...

P.S. By the way - if it didn't correspond to reality, in the film "Officers" of it couldn't be. Censorship wouldn't pass obvious "mockery at communistic awards".
It not modern "I am an artist - I so I see".

WTF?! It's a D-44 85-mm antitank gun! This museum piece still in service?

What are you complaining about? This thing replaces hundreds of soldiers and has the firepower of thousands of rifles, not to mention the range. They probably load it with HE ammunition, and have a range of probably over 10-15km's. This thing is perfectly good to cut through and erase enemy formations, be they on foot or in APCs. Not much will be left after this unit engages an enemy formation. So, I don't see what the problem is. Would you rather have a couple of thousand soldiers run for 10 kilometers and then shoot at the enemies with their small rifles from only a few hundred meters away?

The complain is that this gun is indeed obsolete. But it is Caspain units, which is dead last of receiving new toys. I don't think it is uncommon in other armies that rear units possess obsolete equipment.

What type of bomb is this? Looks like some of 250-kg calibre, maybe FAB-250, but what year? And it has a strange marking for RUAF - never seen before a russian bomb painted in more than one color. Something new?

Well, MT-12 is obsolete equipment. But D-44 is just antique. Let's see... D-44 was replaced by D-48, which, in turn, was succeeded by T-12. T-12 was modernised into MT-12. Now MT-12 is traded for 2A45 Sprut-B and quite rare, but occasionally can be seen in some units. Yes, I know - there is still ZIS-3, but it's used only for ceremonial purposes now. And they still have the 85-mm shells to feed their guns! I think they use that guns for training purposes only, but still that's a rare gun nowadays, indeed.

I guess those guns have been rebarreled and truly overhauled since the 40/50th. I don't think that such an old barrel would be safe to operate after such a long time. So the barrel itself shouldn't be that old.

Серийные поставки в ВС России новых основных боевых танков на базе универсальной платформы "Армата" ожидаются в 2015 году, как и планировалось ранее, написал в пятницу, 13 апреля, в своем твиттере вице-премьер Дмитрий Рогозин

http://lenta.ru/news/2012/04/13/ooops/

So military have already approved armata's appearance and possible date of production.

There is somewhat of a paradox in the Russian army regarding old equipment. For example, the Marines often still have BTR-70s because they are lower priority than army units for receiving new equipment. But the army has plenty of BTR-80s in storage depots. Similarly with tanks. There were units until recently in the far east on Sakhalin island using T-55s. But the army has THOUSANDS of T-72 tanks in storage depots. And here with the arillery, the Caspian units are using antique guns despite the army probably having tens of thousands of newer model guns in storage depots sitting unused. It's weird.

D-44 was replaced by D-48

Different categories: the D-44 is a light field gun, while the D-48 is an anti-tank gun. As such, the D-48 replaced the BS-3 and was in its turn replaced by the T-12. The D-44 was the successor for the ZIS-3.

T-12 was modernised into MT-12.

The MT-12 is not a modernized T-12 but a new production type.

Now MT-12 is traded for 2A45 Sprut-B and quite rare, but occasionally can be seen in some units.

I have never seen any confirmation that the 2A45 entered service. The MT-12 is in no way "quite rare, but occasionally can be seen in some units". There's lots of MT-12s still around.

I think they use that guns for training purposes only, but still that's a rare gun nowadays, indeed.

Nope, also of the D-44 there are still many around all around the world. If we talk about Russia however then indeed mainly for training purposes but also in the Internal Forces.

Here are some links to awesome pictures of different shipyards doing their thing.

Zelenodol'sk shipyard:
http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/16237/ Includes pictures of the new Patrol boat "Grachonok" and frigate dagestan.

http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/16353/ 2 pics of new patrol craft for the coast guard

http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/16081/ Sredne-Nevsky shipyard, does composite hull structures for the new navy corvettes.

http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/15426/ Almaz shipyard, pics of a new Coast Guard ship and the buyan corvette Makhachkala.

http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/15314/ and http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/14825/ Are the best pics of the lot. They show the Yantar' shipyard. We can clearly see the hull of the Admiral Grigorovich frigate taking shape! The fact that Ivan Gren has had it's hull painted! (so they might lower it into the water sometime this summer), The Seliger research ship, currently undergoing trials, and some other fun stuff

http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/15215/ Some pics that were neat in my opinion, never knew we had a shipyard there, but this is the Eastern Wharf shipyard, mainly specializing in small ships and currently fulfilling a contract for vietnam and building a geographical research ship for our own navy.

Sorry the pictures are all in the links guys, I'd try and bunch them together in one post but I don't know how...

It reminds me of classic holywars Ka-50/52 vs Mi-28 that'd been flamed around. The most common opinion was like "bad lobbyist" from Mil successfully strive to supplant their Kamov competitors. Meanwhile the MoD keeps ordering all three (!!) different types of attack helicopters and the Progress plant (Kamov production line) has the largest signed contract atm.
Ka-52 - 140
Mi-28N - 97
Mi-35M - 49 (the second contract for additional 27 units has been signed yesterday)

Anyway 140 Ka-52 is nice number and maybe later they will order more. As I know RuAF already have more than 20 Ka-52 together with pre-serial ones. Which ATGM is standard missile for ka-52 at the moment? Ataka or Vikhr? Any news when will be Hermes ready for ka-52?

I doubt coaxial rotor could support mast mounted radar with enough small vibrations, that it could properly work.

There is some explosive at each rotor blade as far as i know , and when the pilots eject the blades are blasted off.

Major General Vladimir Sergeyevich Ilyushin (March 31, 1927, Moscow – March 1, 2010) was a Soviet general and noted test pilot, and the son of aerospace engineer Sergei Ilyushin. Hero of the Soviet Union (1960)

During his time at the Sukhoi Design Bureau raised for the first time more than a dozen aircraft:

Т-43 (Su-9) (10.10.1957)
PT-8-4 (Su-11) (21.02.1958)
Т-5 (18.07.1958) experimental (use for the Su-15)
S-25L (mod. Su-7) (02.12.1961)
Т-58D-1 (Su-15) (30.05.1962)
Т-58L (06.09.1965) experimental (on the Su-15)
S-22I (Su-17) (02.08.1966)
Т-6-1 (Su-24) (02.07.1967)
Т-6-2I (Su-24) (17.01.1970)
Т-58bis (Su-15bis) (03.07.1972)
Т-4 (22.08.1972)
Su-17М2 (20.12.1973)
Т-8-1 (Su-25) (22.02.1975)
Т-8D (Su-25) (07.12.1976)
Т-10-1 (Su-27) (20.05.1977)
Т-8-1D (Su-25) (21.06.1978)
Т-10-3 (Su-27) (23.08.1979)
Т-10-4 (Su-27) (31.10.1979)
Т-10S (Su-27) (20.04.1981)

Dialogue with Vladimir Ilyushin, recorded in 2000:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=55hnSLJjDFk

Vladimir Ilyushin about of the Su-27, which raised for the first time in the sky:

"Before this I had a chance to fly the aircraft to 142 types, and I always knew that I kind of intelligent aircraft that I can more than he can. But at the same time, 143, everything turned out differently - the machine was smarter than me. And more. When I pulled the wheel of the aircraft from the concrete, raising it for the first time in the air, I realized - this aircraft can do more than be a pilot, and to use all of its wonderful features, it is necessary to improve itself, that it is the aircraft that can be expected lifetime. For the cost of the aircraft to become a pilot"

Wow nice find, as I said, I am surprised!

I was aware of Vikhr on some Mil-24 variants, but never heard about mating Atakas with Kamovs. What's the origin of the picture? I'm guessing some exhibition to show the potential customers that any combination is possible.

The perspective of that photo makes the clearance look far smaller than it really is. The Ruskiy Island Bridge has a 70m vertical clearance. Thats enough for a Nimitz class carrier to fit under.

Khathi
04-21-2012, 11:05 AM
The clearance under the bridge is 76 meters at medium tide (anyway, Golden Horn tides are nothing to speak of), as it was designed with Queen Mary II and Freedom of the Seas in mind. There are also two tall ships based in Vladivostok harbor, Nadezhda and Pallada, so they need to pass the bridge too, and their masts are 52 meters tall. As for the seismic area — well, I keep hearing that Vladivostok is in a seismic zone, but in my 34 years I've yet to experience even a weakest tremor here, while when I was in Japan we've got a quite noticeable shake almost daily. Anyway, the bridge is designed to withstand the shocks up to 8'th degree on a Richter scale, IIRC. Just the pylons' foundations are resting on 120 77-meter long piles each, driven deep into the bedrock, and the bridge deck is free-rolling on them.

All of the important guys tested this tank . Does this means that they are going to buy it(Russian army) or they are like "i am in a tank" ??

Probably the latter. I think the MoD is looking for a large scale replacement of its tank forces, and with that in mind it makes sense to wait another couple of years until the Armata project is completed and then order 2000 Armata tanks, rather than order a few dozen T-90MS tanks now and then move to the new platform later. All of this is assuming that the Armata project comes in on schedule and is up to expectations (in terms of performance and price).

I believe the fashionable term is "morally outdated". :) Seriously, this peak of 1940s thought in personal protection was overdue for replacement sometime in the '70s (along with para soft helmet). Looks repulsive and protects only from bumping your head on the ceiling.

If I understood the statement correctly, both, though T-72 might need some additional mods for the new turret to fit. T-90s will get it almost for certain.

Well... protecting from headbumps is what it was designed for, after all. ;) Make it in Nomex and it'll also protect from fire. And a tanker doesn't exactly need to worry about bullets. ;) And I beg for differ about its repulsiveness. It's no less iconic than 1943-pattern uniforms, and these actually look fantastic, compared to baggy and formless modern uniforms like ACU or Tsifra (which in its latest incarnation is just an ACU's carbon copy). On the other hand para helmet looks like ***** indeed.

Tankers have to worry about spall fragments which pretty much act like regular shrapnel. Protecting against shrapnel is the primary purpose of any helmet. Tanker drivers have to worry about snipers as well when in opened up march mode. While I too love the almost steam punk look of late WW2 uniforms (especially the British style small VSR series hats), modern baggy stuff is comfortable, breathable, fast drying, ergonomic, and generally better in every way. Thought of having to wear itchy wool and leather trenchcoat for years of combat sends shivers down my spine. Early war tankers' uniform looked like something you'd see people wearing at an underground German techno party (minus the butt cheek cutouts).

Aren't all modern tanks (for the last 30-40 years by now) protected against spall fragments with either a spall liner or some form of rubbery paint, which is why HESH rounds became ineffective?

A Kevlar kind? And not save, but give a good chance of deflecting or mitigating otherwise fatal bullet due to speed and angle. As I recall, the new infantry mushroom helmets were being advertised as somewhat bullet resistant.

So why are the rest of the developed world using hard helmets and not those awful goblin hats?

6b28 was tested with point blank shot with a 7.62 TT round I believe, which has about the same power as a round fired from VSS.

Not to mention that you want a hard helmet that will crack and absorb the impact when rolling over
IED, as opposed to the neck and skull taking all the force.

Those helmets were made in a time when a life expectancy of an armored division was less than a day. Crew safety was shelved in favor of cost efficiency and the "good enough" philosophy. IMHO, it's long overdue to ditch that thinking - when it comes to personal protection and safety, no cost is to great.

The "soft" armor helmets Russian crew use now days are a little-bit different than what your referring to as used back in those days. I agree it's still outdated, but it's not really that terrible for what it's used for. It's mostly just a simple com-helmet for in vehicle communication and to prevent you from bumping your head on the interior. The smaller the helmet is, the easier for the tank/armor crew to maneuver inside. Actually our tankers don't wear helmets that are up to par with regular lets say infantry (NIJ IIIA) helmets either. They basically have the same as the Russian helmets in fact, they just have a hard shell on the outer skin as well. The hard shell does give us the edge though, in stopping fragments traveling at high velocities... But still not really considered a "ballistic helmet"...

What I'm getting at is, crew for a tank is more concerned with comfort, small helmet size which makes for easier use inside a cramped tank/bmp/etc. If they are under enemy fire wearing a bullet-proof helmet is secondary to CLOSING THE HATCH ;) Not that I disagree, of course their is always the exception; a sniper could catch them off guard, but in general its not a major concern for the cost...

Exactly.

The helmet's may look like ballistic helmets because they have a completely enclosed outer surface made from a hard looking material and are shaped as a "helmet", (as opposed to the soft material and the non-shell like surface of the Russian helmet) but are in fact not ballistic helmets but something akin a skadeboard helmet...they are also just an inner communications and bump/fire protection liner with a harder shell, meant to protect your head when you hit it on something on the interior, with the enclosed outer shell not offering and weak-points like between the ribs on the rusian helmet.
They won't protect anyone from enemy fire, and they won't protect one from imaginary theoretical "fragments" either (except you take a specific outer shell that is meant to do that). When you are in the position in a tank that "fragments" need to be stopped by a small pot that sits on your head, you have much bigger problems, as you are probably in the process of loosing limbs, your face, or your neck. You skull is, in that situation, strong enough to protect itself much better than any of your other bodyparts are.

Also, what is this he's wearing here: http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6209/154814723.2/0_6589b_96f70217_XL.jpg
Just an outer waterproof liner for the same old bump/com helmet?

The official name is unknown (somehow he, in description of standard, is named). There is only the conditional name "PS FSB".
My clarification touched a point: "soldier in this camouflage - not necessarily border guard".

So the Russian's are doing away with the Clamshell design and adopting a western style turret?
What Model is this, its not the T-90MS is it?

The guy on the first photo - borderguard?
Not only that - if this standard is not reserved "exclusively for the FSB", when he gets on Chinese factories...

Ah, but it is the clamshell design. They just added new ERA modules and new armor screens that protect the sides and the new ammo compartment in the back of the turret. Base turret shape is the same as on T-90A, a bit elongated to accomodate the panoramic sight.

If I remember correctly it's a Ka-50-2 Erdogan. It was a version marketed when Turkey searched for some attack helicopter.

Yes, this was the 1/72 scale AMT kit. Just google for pictures of AMT Hokum for more. The black and white pics are photos of the model, which was even mentioned in official US military publications (http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/b148401.pdf), including an issue of the US Army OPFOR Magazine, Red Thrust Star.

Very good photos Vitaly, thank you!
Is this the standard camo for all the vehicles of Russian Army, thsi green color? Or they keep specific amount of vehicles and tanks with this color for the parade?
green is just for the parade, but some vehicles will stay in that colour after the parade. BTRs for example

What is the point of painting them all green? Just to appear uniform? And what color did those particular T-90's have pre repaint?

The poster wants the artists impression of the original Ka-50 - before details were known - not Erdogan.

A few images of the Ka-50-2 Erdogan......

Ah, but it is the clamshell design. They just added new ERA modules and new armor screens that protect the sides and the new ammo compartment in the back of the turret. Base turret shape is the same as on T-90A, a bit elongated to accomodate the panoramic sight.
Suuuure. Panoramic sight took all the space in that container for shells.

The core armored part of the turret is different, it is wider in the front (note: 4 vs 3 ERA tiles, extending over the extra width added by the new sideskirts) to cover the extended lenght from wider angles (which would otherwise be exposed at less than 30), and it is higher in the center (directly after the frontal armor), which may probably allow for either a higher gun depression or thicker turret armor.

What the hell? Camera man tells them what to do. Take binoculars, watch left right. Now take the rifle.. Wtf?

Its just directions to get a good shot. They are acting for the cameras, the camera man wants to get a shot of them overlooking the countryside with binoculars, then aiming with guns, etc. For the newsreels.

That's not Borodino, that's Novik, the original project. Borodino would have been demilitarized.

Thank you for your answer and your photos (even though I reply late). So there is no ship of the class in active service?
