Well, let's say I emphasize on mastering when I'm talking about learning a programming language. Most of the seasonal C++ programmers are content with less than half the features therein, and they don't feel the need to learn more. Find me a coder who has mastered ISO C++ 2003, knows his STL and Boost and still is sane. :P

I would compare learning a language and being proficient in it with learning English--not only the alphabets and basic grammar--and being able to read, comprehend and write something like Ulysses or Lolita. But then, I'm a perfectionist.

Are you a programmer as well?
