Sorry, my time in Najaf (July-November 04) was spent as a Fobbit, and I never left the gates of Camp Duke except to convoy in and out of there twice. The most firsthand news I got from outside the wire was when an Iraqi soldier told me Muqtada as-Sadr was finally dead (which turned out to be a false rumor), and when General Hejlik (then-commander of 11th MEU) said to me that the enemy was tough, when I asked him how things were going. I wish I could answer your question, but to be honest I was mostly occupied trying to hook up with the hot Marine and National Guard chicks on the base.
