Delta merged with Western Airlines. It seemed a bit of bad luck for whatever reason, for in the summer of '87 a string of incidents began where a Delta L1011 nearly collided with a Continental 747 over the north Atlantic(pilot error), in 1988 a Delta 727 landed at the wrong airport in Kentucky(pilot error), also in 1988 a 727 crashed on takeoff from Dallas(pilot error). Passenger confidence dropped. In 1991 Delta absorbed Pan Am's network which floundered and DA simply got too big. Passenger service hit rock bottom in the mid to late 1990s (and is still there). Delta prior to 1987 used to be a carrier where they opened new routes very slowly, giving them time to work before starting an additional new route. In 1987/88 there were a lot of airline mergers in the US which in my view ruined the industry, created mega carriers which wiped out quality passenger care and service. Delta was one such carrier that fell victim to that and has never recovered really.
What happended to Delta in 1987?
Yes I know. I've been thoroughly brainwashed, I think it was spending all those summers days when I was a wee kid staying at Pioneer City outside of Belgrade in the old Yugoslavia. That red neckerchief left stains.
