It is not about distance, and it is not about location. The original purpose of NATO was to stand together in defense of what was then the USSR and later WP. The situation has changed somewhat today. What would Mexico gain from joining today, it has no real external threats. If Mexico would join wat would it bring to NATO (other then basing rights)? Other then support/cooperation for drug interdiction operations in the Carribean that some NATO members are conducting I can see no real benefit for Mexico at this time. NATO today is just a name/acronim for a succesful mutual defence organisation that is more and more in demand internationaly for an ever expanding military presence against a variaty of threats. A military policeforce so to speak. So again what is the gain for Mexico?
