30 Nov 2006] /АRMS-ТАSS/A Mi-17 helicopter pilot training center outfitted with Russian-made unique equipment opens in Mexico on November 28.The Centre providing the personal training of pilots with training results being entered into a computer has been created in especially built premises in the territory of a Mexico AF base, Veracrus state, on the shore of the Mexican gulf.Speaking at a ceremony arranged on the occasion, Navy minister vice-admiral Marco Antonio Peirot Gonsales highly appreciated the new training centre having all conditions necessary to ensure integral training of personnel. Under a contract with Rosoboronexport, St. Petersburg-based aircraft repair plant 'Spark' carries out repair and maintenance of Russian-built helicopters.Minewhile, on November 28 there was held a parade of Mexican Navy units with the involvement of Russian- made helicopters. At present Mexico has about 60 such aircraft in service.
Can any one confirm this info about the plant in mexico that will repair the Mi-17s.

The Mi-17 represented great value when compared to earlier acquisitions of far more expensive uh-60 or second hand UH-1 hueys. now if we could only get some MI-35...This is great, great, news. It can even serve to train south american pilots.
i like the commitment to the Mi-17 and Russian vehicles, making the acquisition of the SU27/30 that more plausible.

Gunmen ambush soldiers: One dies, another hurt

NUEVO LAREDO – Unknown attackers ambushed two officers in the Mexican Army Intelligence Service in the southwest part of the city, killing a captain and injuring a colonel, officials said Thursday.The attack occurred near 7 p.m. Wednesday night as the two Army officers were driving on the highway to the airport near its intersection with Avenida Dr. Mier.
Civil authorities identified the deceased as Capt. Agustín Moisés Salazar, but did not give the officer’s hometown. Meanwhile, the injured colonel was taken to a military hospital in Mexico City. His name was not released.
A rare official report of the attack came from Nuevo Laredo city police, who responded to the initial call about reports of gunfire in the area. Officers said they arrived to find a Ford Explorer with Veracruz license plates crashed into the fence of a school building.
Inside, according to the police report, officers found the two soldiers. The driver was dead, and his injured passenger was in the front seat next to him.
The injured soldier asked police officers for help, asking them to call for reinforcements from the regiment stationed at the Army fort in Nuevo Laredo, according to the report.
Once they were told about the attack, Army officers and soldiers in three Hummers promptly arrived and cordoned off the area, gave emergency treatment to the colonel and took over the investigation. They also attended to the slain officer.
“Our police officers arrived at the scene, but didn’t touch anything. They only provided assistance and asked for reinforcements,” said one city police official.
In the city police report, officers said they saw official documents and tags inside the vehicle, as well as weapons, a radio and other equipment. There were also numerous spent .223-caliber shells scattered around the area; that’s the ammunition that is usually used in semi-automatic and automatic weapons.
Federal preventive police officials said they were told about the attack, and said the Army is investigating.
“They have the case, but we can assist them,” the official said.
No one ventured a guess about the possible motive for the attack, but soldiers have been in the area as part of the federal government’s efforts to battle drug trafficking. Army helicopters have been seen patrolling Nuevo Laredo skies in recent days.
Neighbors in the ambush area, who did not want to give their names, said they heard the report of machine guns and then the screech of tires on the pavement as vehicles sped away.
Not everyone thought it was gunfire.
“We just heard loud bangs and then someone taking off,” said one boy. “We thought they were firecrackers.”
Groups from the Special Forces Battalions arrive in search of the aggressors.

Luego de la emboscada a dos militares, donde uno murió y otro fue herido, en la noche del pasado miércoles, elementos de los Batallones de Fuerzas Especiales, implementaron operativos en esta ciudad.
En caravanas de 10 a 15 unidades, entre camionetas y hummers, los soldados prácticamente tomaron las calles de esta ciudad fronteriza, realizando rondines por diferentes rumbos, así lo ha revelado la propia ciudadanía comunicándose a este vespertino.
En cada vehículo viajan por lo menos de 4 a 8 elementos de las fuerzas armadas. Fue el jueves cuando llegaron los elementos de las fuerzas especiales para apoyar el operativo, en busca de los responsables de la emboscada a dos militares, un capitán y un coronel, del Ejército Mexicano
Este vespertino, observó parte este operativo en la colonia Hipódromo, en el crucero de Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez y Coahuila, donde cerraron la circulación para revisar a algunas personas y vehículos, cabe decir, que no hubo detenidos.
De ahí siguieron su marcha hacia el poniente de la ciudad, desconociéndose los lugares donde aplicaron los retenes, y dado el hermetismo con el que opera las fuerzas armadas de la milicia, se desconocen los resultados de los demás operativos realizados durante el día de ayer.
the attack happened on boulevard colosio which leads to the airport , its a sparsely populated area so i am not surprised that no one heard anything , the army presence is being concentrated in the southern part of town , primarily in colonia infonavit, hipodromo, and maestro.
