Does anyone have any experience or good info with the SMP program with the Army Reserves? I think basically a program which college students enrolled in ROTC, who enlist in the Army Reserves and they become quasi-officer with your reserve unit and get the pay of an E-5. I've already gone through MEPS, MOS and have a ship date. Thanks

I was prior enlisted (11B, E-5), then signed up for the SMP program after a CONUS deployment. I'm in the ARNG, but I think the reserves program is identical. I'm only in SMP in name only to allow me to be contracted through ROTC. I still wore my enlisted rank and retained my old position with my unit. (which is a recon unit)

I really can't speak that much for the program traditionally because I think most of the participants act as cadets within their units, maybe even as PLs, and most are cadets that havent gone to BCT/AIT.

heh, the reason i enlisted was not be such an ROTC cadet when i get my commision. What specific jobs, positions, etc. within your unit effect your standing if your in the SMP program? Is it relative to your MOS?

ive heard of some cadets being coffee ferrets and some just doing paperwork and some that are actual PLs. I think its your COs perrogative on which task youre assigned. In an actual combat unit I doubt theyd give a cadet a platoon leader assignment, but then again I could be wrong. My unit is stepping things up for our pre deployment training to the Stan. I'll be commissioned and probably be transferred to a different company when that happens to maintain integrity.

My unit was a 13B(155 Towed) turned to 21C(Bridge Crew) (f**king reformations) and we now currently have 8 SMP cadets...they basically relieve the PL of some of his paperwork, and do other BS around the armory...as a team leader i have to round everyone up for details, training, etc. and can ALWAYS count on half of our cadets asleep in one of our upstairs offices...but this weekend is my last NG drill...active army here I come!

I think you should be able to join the ROTC at whatever school you go to (provided they have one) - once you get back from BCT and/or AIT.

Yup i'm already taking ROTC at a school nearby. I'm split-op so i'll go to BCT during the summer and AIT will come next summer. The only issue i have right now is trying to get my ship date renoed, as the grad date is 4 days before school starts again, this also depends if i get out of reception on time if i can't change it.

Talk to your Dean and relevant school officials.

They will make it work. I know this to be the case at the University of Mississippi.

The last thing a school wants is a bad newspaper article about how they won't work with their students.

Default REQ: Marine Security Forces info

I have just signed up as 03xx Marine Security Force and would like to know if anyone has personal experience with this field. What I do know is that I will be involved in the MSG for 2 years then after that I join the fleet as an infantry Marine. What I want to know is what MSG is like and what a typical week is like. Another perk of the job is that I have a shot at joining FAST, but from what I understand it's luck of the draw. Any insight would be appreciated.

Are you going in as Marine Security Forces, or Marine Security Gaurd. Two different units. If you're going to one of the Security Forces or FAST Companies I can ask a couple of the guys I work with as they've been in various Security Force Companies, FAST, and the Security Force Training Company. I've also got a guy i my NG unit that was a MSG at the US Embassy in Haiti.

I signed my contract in July for MOS 13F(fire support specialist). I ship out in three months.

Anyone know much about the training of a 13F?
