Sure Infantry is dangerous , but what the hell isnt? You got to take chances in life , Decide for yourself, and not worry about what other people want for you, that includes parents, friends ,etc...

If you want to do 4 years in the MC and come out with a career, do something like computer programing. But if you want to have the experience of a lifetime, infantry, artillery, armor , there aint nothing better! Everyjob in the Marine corps is important, just decide what u want.
I hope you keep up with basic infantry knowledge during security forces because all the guys that I got from security forces were worthless. It was was like teaching a boot all over again except that he is an E-4.

Not to get off topic, but I heard that before. And I know once I get to my infantry unit ill be a CPl and have to prove my worth. I aint gonna slack, and Im gonna stay mental and physically prepared and willing to brush up,even if a LCPl gotta teach me something.

Dont listen to them Aztec, they just want you to be miserable like they were!!

Naah, I often wish I had gone Infantry. I was Artillery. We got an occasional glimpse of grunt life, patrolling and the like. Thats why I joined the Marines, thats what I wanted to be doing.
But ****, I still loved it, and now I get to shoot clowns out of cannons!

Well, there are LCpl's leading infantry platoons in A-Stan and Iraq right now, so you might be given the chance to prove yourself before you know it.

I have some friends that are Lcpls that are leading the Afghan Army in a FOB. And its usually 1 marine per Afghani company.

If you do choose to go infantry, just be ready for a rough ride. As much as it sucks sometimes, it's the only job for some people. I couldn't stand doing any other job, but there's a lot of BS that comes along with it.

Yeah, I thought it was an interesting coincidence. I'm hoping to ship out sooner, but that's dependent on whether someone at my station on an infantry contract and earlier ship date drops out.

If your in a motivated battalion, count on doing that every Friday. You want to get in the hummers or LAV's, and you get that by being a heavy wpns. gunner, or TOW gunner. Not that they dont get they're fair share of ground pounding, just not during exercises and deployments.
Hmm, I was an 0311. I recall comments like yours that stopped coming when 52s had to hump a whole TOW system, batteries and tripod included, and the "mobile" guys got to hump Mk19s and M2s. Made my little M16 seem like nothing, hehe.

For the original poster - I was an 0311. It was challenging, but it could also be very rewarding, and now, 11 years out of the Corps, I still feel kind of cool. Except when my wife asks me if I had to fight a fire demon with a sword while in boot camp - she never believes me when I tell her that I did!

    Have a good one.

I would take the advice of others when it comes to the swimming part-take swim lessons now so the boot camp quals for swimming won't as tough;I almost failed the swim portion of boot camp and I was scared sh1tless the Drill Instructors were going to recycle me or drop me out of boot camp for it

I went aviation when I signed on the dotted line and it's definitely a trade you'll have for life

I went infantry, I had a lot of fun and a lot of misery.
It's my alma mater and I wouldn't trade it.
I was trained 0311 was shifted over to 0341 in the fleet and volunteered for STA later.
In boot, play the game and be hard and shut your mouth.
In the fleet pay attention and learn.
    Or something.
I grew up in Cali and swimming was easy for me, it is just one task, but a crucial one.
Practice jumping in over your head and treading water as well as swimming.
Run and do pull ups etc. You have a lot of time, use it.

    He's joking right?!

BikeWrench, how was 4thFR when you were there?

From what I've seen, I'd have never made it as a grunt for any number of reasons and AirCrewman for a helo (I don't know if they are called that on Cargo aircraft) appears to be the sweetest gig out there. Though I hear NBC specialists can net excellent Homeland Sec. Jobs when they get out.

Let me sum up my feelings this way, it's hard to know before hand but if you think for any reason you will be able to exceed the standard in whatever position you get out there then just know that if it doesn't make your superiors look good you'll be marginalized/neutralized at all costs. Call me contumacious but that's what I've observed. At least now you can get legitimate College benefits out of an enlistment.
