There is a thing called college first that you can sign up for in your contract I believe. Basically means you are untouchable for about 4 years so you can finish college before being available for a call up. And yes you can interstate transfer. Depends on if the unit you get assigned to allows it first.

I'm doing Army Reserve plus College plus ROTC....well that was the plan. I was supposed to begin Freshman year in August, but that changed once I got orders to go to Afghanistan with another unit.

When I do go to college, I will have an advantage. First of all, I will still have my MGIB-Selected Reserve plus $350 Kicker, plus part of my bonus (deployment will give me more benefits because I will have more time in active-duty). For ROTC, it will be a good benefit to have a 2nd LT who's been deployed before earning a commission.

You should look into both Guard and Reserve and see which is best. I was going to go Guard, but found that Reserve is better for me, seeing that I know that I'm going active duty officer, plus Reserve had the MOS of my choice.

You could also look into College First options. If you plan to stay enlisted, there are currently Loan Repayment Programs for up to $20,000, but they might change in a few years.

Ok Ladies and Gents, i've recently had a meeting with my USMC recruiter and some things about what he said im not so sure about. Thus why im here asking anyone who may know.

I went on to ask him about the avaliability of the programs that are offered,(such as Tanks, Admin, Aviation Mech., etc.) And ultimatly he said that programs get filled throughout the year, that is why, sometimes, new recruits have onlly a few options when they sign up.

However, openings for the various programs become avaliable at the beginning of every fiscal year( in this/next years case, October is the beginning of the fiscal year). So then among your asvab scores, as well as any other qualifications/specifications you have, you have a broader set of program choices.

With that said, the recruitment system the USMC uses is a "first come-first serve" mentality.

Does all this make sense?sound correct?

My situation right now is that i will be done with college this time next year, but in order for me to be finished this soon, im going to be VERY busy from now until then.
What my recruiter offers is that if i sign up now, i'll be among the first to choose from the programs of the next fiscal year, (Apparently they are backed up by months, so July recruits have first dibs compared to August recruits). After telling him of my situation with college, he said he needs to talk with his CO about having my shipping out date wait until next July, a whole year of waiting essentially.(though it might not be possible to work this out)
My alternative is to not to sign up until next July and then go through the same process, the only difference is that i may ship out a few months after college instead of the month i finish college.

thanks for taking the time to read this, i appreciate all the advice i can get.

Recruiters are essentially sales people who have quotas to meet, so don't be snowed by any sort of limited time offer crap. College transcripts are set in stone, so allow yourself time to get good grades.

Serving in the military under a President who is a member of the Democratic Party is miserable. There is no hurry to subject yourself to that.

Quite easy to do...except I know guys that were supposed to be non-deployable but go orders for Iraq and Afghanistan, whereas I know others that volunteered to go with their units. In VA it works simple really, if you're in the guard and are from another state and you transfer to go to school you automatically get state tuition and state tuition assistance. And yes I'm from CA and go ahead and draw your conclusions. I just don't know how the guys do it when they go home on summer break.

There is also SMP(Simultaneous Membership Program) which you can't contract until your second year of ROTC I think...and well those guys that were just grunts in the NG get E5 pay for drill when they contract SMP(official rank is a circle), I've seen three circles before. Some guys contract SMP and don't even do BCT and AIT...but he difference is you get more money if you do. As an SGM once sid to some ROTC kids...have they told you anything about SMP over at the schoolhouse.

Also for some of you youngins that really want in NG has split option where you do BCT the summer before your senior year and AIT right after you graduate...you get drill pay so it is a nice option.

Everything you said sounds about right but im not sure about the part I highlighted. You have to choose a job while your at meps or go undesignated which is what it sounds like your recruiter is trying to make you do and if thats the case just wait until your done with college or close to it then join so you can get the job you want. I joined up in october and got alot of different jobs to choose from but the one i chose didnt ship out until july so I got put in DEP(Delayed entry program) and now im leaving tuesday. So it doesnt sound to much like your recruiter is trying to bs you.

I mentioned that it was a first come-first serve deal. However he said they are backed up with new recruits, so then lets say people who sign up in May will have first choice over those who sign up in June. I didn't think to go further into it at the time. But in hindsight, yeah, it doesnt make sense when you add in the beginning of the fiscal year and all.

i thought about it, and i've made the decision. A year is a LONG time to wait, while being commited. I've decided to wait till im done. But im glad to know that my Recruiter is keeping the BS meter low.

I would be doing SMP my 2nd year of ROTC, but I will lose my sweet bonus. I will just stay enlisted until my contract is up (my Reserve contract will end a few months before I get my Bachelor's Degree). Plus, when you become SMP, you get demoted from Soldier to "cadet" (which is what the "circle rank" is). Plus "cadet" sounds really gay.

Hey all, signed up for Army DEP last week. 11x Opt. 4 for 4 years. Tentative ship date is 22 June of next year.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about this over the past 2-3 years, lots of research and talking to people who served. I considered 13B, 19D and 68W for a while but decided to go all the way, I guess you could say. Did the research, got some good bonuses, and plan on showing up as well prepared as an 18 year old can be for infantry OSUT. Any pointers?

    Sup guys,

Yr 12 student in Australia here, currently applying for Gap Year in the Army part of the ADF. For job preferences, I've got down Rifleman, Operator Movement and then Operator Supply in that order. I know rifleman is being a rifleman, operator supply is operating a q-store and whatnot but I chose Operator Movement on the basis that I'd be learning how to drive after basic training and then just driving or maintaining vehicles for the rest of the year.

Which was all okay until I found out about another job called Driver Transport which isn't available to gap year applicants but looks really similar to Operator Movement.

What would Operator Movement entail as a job and also, anything to keep in mind for a YOU session on this Tuesday?

Congrats, you should do just fine. Show up with a positive attitude and don't let the sh*tbags get to you later down the road.

Also, try to get a few contracts or even college credits, I don't know the details on early promotion in the Army but I would imagine there's some sort of reward for doing that.

If only I was a contract E-2 I would be eligible for E-4 in December. Now I have to wait another 9-10 months.
