Well...if you contract SMP then you become no-deployable. But I've not heard that before.

Just graduated from BCT, I am 27 with a college degree and I enlisted. It wasn't a problem for me, I was high PT for my platoon and voted best soldier in my platoon. You will be dealing with a lot of young, dumb scumbags and a handful of squared away privates. Approach it with a positive attitude and let everyone fight amongst themselves; you'll either remain in the shadows or rise above everyone. Best decision of my life so far and I am a reservist. It's like a little break from life and a chance to contribute the effort ahead.
After high school, I want to become a police officer. But before I go into police academy training, I want to become a MP for either the Marines or the Navy. Any advice or recommendations? Or should I go for a different position in the military/different branch?
Thanks in advance![]()

Out of curiosity, where in NJ do you live? Do you have a specific police department you want to enter?
That's a load of crap. You must go SMP or have it in your contract to be non deployable. Your unit will not care if you're in ROTC and are not a part of SMP. If you are SMP, you will become a "cadet" and no longer be considered a Soldier. They obviously will not deploy a "cadet."
All the cadets in my unit are not even qualified in an MOS that my unit even supports.
PT will come to you as you do BCT. The only thing to worry about if you are overweight (or close to it) is the run. Just run your ass off. Forget about push ups and sit ups, everyone passed that first time if I remember correctly. You will do too many flutter kicks, push ups and weapon PT to fail those. Most peoples' problem is the run and we didn't have a shortage of failures in the run in BCT, AIT and my Reserve unit.
MP service is different from civilian policing, so there is not a lot of valuable skills that you will transfer to civilian law enforcement. It's like when people get a criminal justice degree that doesn't give them a lot for law enforcement. If you want to go in to the military do something that you find most interest in, don't choose something like MP because you think it will help you land a sheriff's job better.
Join the Marines or Navy do your time come out be a Police Officer.
Each service under the DoD has MP in one way or another. Army and Marines have MP. Navy, I believe, has Master at Arms, and Air Force has Security Forces. Any path you take would be a good start towards civilian law enforcement.
On a post, military law enforcement is exactly like civilian law enforcement. They will pull you over for speeding, and respond to emergencies. In a war zone, they are usually in charge of detainee ops, check points and sometimes patrols, from what I've heard.

The majority of the cops I know who are prior military were Infantry. The majority of the cops I know who are in the Marine Corps reserves are Infantry. The majority of my cop friends were either active duty Marines or reservist currently serving in the USMC reserves. For such a small branch, there are sure a lot of Marines who are LEO's.
As much as it pains me to say this, if you want to be an MP don't go Navy.
Let me say that again: DON'T GO USN.
It's really hard to get a Master-at-Arms rate, most go to guys who re-enlist and are re-training from other ratings, and frankly speaking they really don't do much police work at all.
So out of those two I recommend USMC.
