well gents, i have come to find out that school, money, and time are a bitch when you are trying to cram it all together. So i've shifted my thoughts from Active Marine duty after i finish school, onto the Marine Reserves until i finish school, which leaves me with these questions.
there are different contracts in the reserve, such as 6*2, or 5*3 where you serve the first # of years as a active reservist(dont know the proper term) then the last year's you switch to the inactive Reserve. thats my basic understanding about contracts in the reserve. My question is, if I were to go to the Marine reserves, can i change my contract to become a full time Marine?
Im not sure how to word this question, but when does boot camp take place during the year?I've got 3 weeks left in school this semester, and i dont know if i sign up will it be to late to attend boot during the summer.?
edit: any info would be much appreciated.
thank you
Reserve contracts are most commonly a 6x2. First six years you perform you weekend drills and Annual Training (unless called to active duty). You can choose to serve the remaining time of your Reserve contract on active duty. But it can be a long an complicated process. But it happens.
Boot Camp is run 365 days a year. If you're still in school and admit about attending without interruption, I suggest you look into signing a Reserve contract as a 96 Day Reservist. Under this contract you'll attend boot camp during the summer months, graduating before the fall semester begins. You'll then go to your unit and drill as a MOSless Marine. The next summer, you'll be shipped of to SOI, then your respective MOS school.
There is a process in switching from reserves to active. My buddy did a few years back. He was a combat engineer in the reserves and went active as jet mechanic. When he did it took a lot of effort on his part. The reserves have numbers to fill as well so its not as easy as snapping your fingers.
As for bootcamp, its year round. Your attendance is dependant on what's open. You could go as soon as 1 week after you sign your papers and clear MEPS. Or, you could be waiting a while. Your recruiter will be able to tell you once your eligible to go. They usually tend to try and get you in ASAP to avoid you possibly getting cold feet.
my recruiter mentioned this, but said it was looked down upon.
you both mention that its difficult to transit from Reserve to Active Duty. could you please elaborate?
I might get a chance to talk to the recruiter tomarrow, until then im just snooping around until then. I came across this program called Icremental initial Active Duty for Training (IIADT) sounds like a plan for me. do you happen to know anything about it?
I am a 92 day reservist right now attending ASU. What happens is first off its a 6x2 contract so you have six years in selected Marine Corps Reserve then 2 in the inactive reserves. I'm assuming your still in high school what will happen is you will attend boot for 13 weeks in the summer between your graduation and commencement of the university year. Then summer after your first year you will either go to SOI or your MOS school. The new policy is for the 92 dayers you only have to attend one or the other because you most likely learn all that stuff at your unit, which you have already been with for a year. (One of my Cpls went to Iraq and only went to MOS school). Other than that you will drill once a month while in school and thats about it. You have to find a recruiter that will work with you a little bit. I changed MOS's five times to make it work (Intel-Infantry-Logistics-Bulk Fuel). Any more ?'s just post here or PM me. Good luck devil pup.
PS IIADT is the same thing as a 92 day-er. You do your increments of Active duty during the summer (Boot->SOI->MOS)
And screw that recruiter for saying its looked down upon. Its the way to go if you want to be a Marine and still have a college education.
