The US Marine Corps has selected the Golan multi-purpose modular armored vehicle made by Rafael Armament Development Authority Ltd. and PVI of the US for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Marines will initially buy 60 Golans for $37 million.

The Golan is a new wheeled armored car for transporting troops and other uses, such as a command vehicle, ambulance or intelligence gathering. The vehicle’s mix of reactive modular armor tiles and passive modular armor can handle a broad range of threats, such as roadside bombs, RPGs and other anti-armor ordnance found in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wow, I didn't even know they were looking for a new wheeled vehicle. The USMC is capable of changing so much faster than the army.

Based on the info in the above link, the USMC is buying Golans, Bushmasters and RG-31s?

We're not talking about replacing an entire fleet of vehicles. They're buying a small lot of them for a specific purpose. The US Army did the same with a series of mine proof trucks last year.

If the money is available and the specific branch feels that it's needed a limited fielding is easy enough to pull off.

It's just an order for 200 MRAP vehicles out of a total planned of 4500 ones.

60 MRAP vehicules are already in Irak. They are fitted with a V shaped hull and raised chassis to counter the IED's and mines.

This is the list of vehicules to be fielded in Irak by the USMC, Army and Navy :http://www.defense-update.com/products/m/mrap.htm

An Israeli vehicle? Not very politically sensitive to Iraqi's who would pick up on the orgin's of this vehicle. Probably doesn't matter at this point of the war.

What does it compare most with as far as features go? Regarding its hull, is it more like the german Dingo or more like the RG-series and its V-hull.

The Golan is co-manufactured and assembled by PVI (that means hundred of american jobs). For the politically correct thing, do you know that the targeting pod used to guide the bomb that killed Al Zarkawi was israeli (Rafael Litening made under license by Grunman). Also the M2A1 Bradley's external armor is israeli made... Must be plenty of exemple, Israel have sold weapons worth 1b$ to the US in 2006.

The only one missing it seems is the Dingo II. Didn't Textron offer the vehicle?

Great points. I guess from a purely symbolic viewpoint, having a whole armored vehicle (not bits and pieces) being linked to Israel may not bide well with Iraqis. Its like if the Marines bought Merkava tanks for the Iraqi theatre.

    lol how do you figure??

ever heard about the FCS project??

    how bout the XM-8/SCAR/416 debate

What about the Stryker vehicle? Or the M1A2?

New variations on the SAW and MK19 have been employed for the Army

Advanced communications systems and SATCOM have been emplaced in almost all frontline Army vehicles

last thing I heard about the MC changing was them cancelling the vehicle which was supposed to replace the AAV. (which takes an RPG and kills everyone inside)
