Are those really combat helmets they are wearing or only for show? Seems like an awful lot of room in there.

I didn't understand much but I suppose that in second video we can hear DDR national anthem? I kinda liked that song and judging from some german comments in youtube they like that song more than current German anthem.

The DDR was finished just a few weeks afterwards, this was ze last parade.
I finished school in August that year and in June we had a school trip to West Berlin with a day in East Berlin. At that time there was still all that commie routine. I wouldn't have thought that the DDR would dissapear so fast.

Fascinating videos. To think that the events in both videos only happened 18 years ago (Berlin Wall being toppled was one of my earliest memories being born in 1985 and all!) still amazes me. It seems unusual to me that Germany was two separate countries until relatively recently and that you still see 'Made in West Germany' on consumer items sometimes.
I wonder what the propaganda effect of those videos was, as late as 1989 - the crowds certainly didn't appear to be happy looking in the guard change video.

Hahahahaha I love how they pay their respect to the victims of fascism and militarism in the first video... With a big ass Parade of troops that see themselves in a line with the prussian army, which was, according to the Allies and the Soviets alike, the root of evil German militarism...

It's a very nice anthem, but it can also be seen as a parody of the Socialist system.
There are passages about how Germany rises up from the ruins, but in reality it took an awful long time to rebuild the DDR because the dear soviet friends took away everything they could get their hands on.
I also love how they sing about a united Fatherland and build a ****ing wall through a city!

But at the end, the anthem was right, we are united now
