BAGAN DATOH, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- KD Seri Inderapura, the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN)'s biggest landing craft, burned on Oct 8 at the RMN base jetty in Lumut due to a short-circuit, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the investigation team had identified the source of the blaze as being due to a wiring fault given that the vessel was 40-years-old.
He said his ministry had the option to either make the vessel a RMN Museum piece or have it sold for used parts.
"We will get advise from the National Audit Department on what to choose," he told reporters after a 1Malaysia Programme here Sunday.
Ahmad Zahid said there were efforts to replace the ship and his ministry was evaluating vessels from Korea, France and Germany.
Ahmad Zahid said besides that his ministry was also evaluating similar ships from other countries but emphasis would be on a new ship.
He said the purshase of a ship would be done by the Finance Ministry based on a request by the Defence Ministry to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the Finance Minister.
As the building of a new ship will take a period of between 48 and 60 months, work on the matter had already begun.
During a working-visit to South Korea recently he had discussed the matter with the country's prime minister and defence minister and
they had agreed to supply a ship with the same functions for the time being before a new ship could be got, he said.
"That is a sign of the close friendship and relations between Malaysia and South Korea," he said.
A proposal to sink the KD Seri Inderapura as an artificial reef off Pulau Sembilan was abandoned as it was too big and was considered to be dangerous to passing vessels.
