No they arent "just a variation of the Owen". Both weapons were designed by different people. the Owen was uniqely australian, and the AUSTEN took features off various weapons, ie: sten, MP40, and was made with the best of these features. It wasnt very popular due to the stock being too long, whereas the owen was hugely popular, and was used until long after vietnam.
BTW, fantastic pics! Cant wait to see more!

Cheers for the link Sir J. I knew we must've had one in here somewhere.
Here's something a little different, hopefully, the true military history enthusiasts will enjoy.
On 11 April 2007, Prime Minister John Howard launched “Records online” at the National Archives in Canberra. In a three-year preservation project, the National Archives digitised 376,000 service records of the men and women of the 1st Australian Imperial Force 1914 - 1918.
As a gift to the nation, these records are all available online.

Yeah, those online records are great. I've found relatives in WW1 and WW2 (but you have to wait a bit to get those ones).
Another nice find thanks for that one. Looking forward to the WWII ones coming on line.
1 of 6Australian support for South Vietnam in the early 1960s was in keeping with American policy of stemming the tide of communism.
From the arrival of advisers in 1962, until the last battalion left Nui Dat in November 1971, 50 000 Australians, including ground troops and Air Force and Navy personnel, saw service. Of these, some 500 were killed and almost 2,400 wounded. The war was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent in Australia since the conscription referendums of the First World War.

Same. Moving stuff if you happen across a photo of a digger, do a name search and it turns out he was KIA somewhere fighting for his country.
I almost bought a WW1 death plaque recently - British - purely on instant emotional attachment. 19 y.o. Brit soldier (same surname as mine), killed day 1 of the Somme offensive.
Someone else had deeper pockets than me ... c'est la vie!
P.S. Cheers Jµµso for the videos - magic stuff.

The Italian Warship San Giorgio
January 22 1941 - Tobruk, Libya is taken from the Italians by British and Australian forces. Italian coastal defence ship San Giorgio is scuttled off Tobruk by the Italian crew. San Giorgio was cited for its bravery at maintaining its position and bombing advancing Commonwealth forces, halting them for 11 hours.
