    hi
here in portugal in the police we only have divers in the gnr.thát´s a civilian course that the oficers take to get acesse to others functions in that police force.for exemple we have the sepna that belongs to the gnr and that is responsible for nature ralated crimes.so the divers course is used in the sepna because of rivers and the sea.
divers that make rescues belong to the fire fighters or to the navy.
that i know psp doesn´t have divers in there ranks.
    go to www.gnr.pt
    or
www.psp.pt and look the galery.maybe you find some photos,or not...

    sorry about mi english

In Portugal the only police force with diver capability is the GNR and they only got that capability recently (September 2006). Those military/police officers (24 members?) are part of SEPNA - Serviço de Protecção da Natureza e Ambiente (Environment and Nature Protection Service).

    SEPNA badge

When police autorities need to user divers, the use firemen trained as divers or the Navy Divers (Destacamentos de Mergulhadores-Sapadores n.º1 and n.º 2 - Sapper Divers Detachments no.1 and no. 2) . Note that Mergulhadores-Sapadores are part of the Navy's Operational Forces and not part of Polícia Marítima - Maritime Police, which also belongs to the Navy, but is integrated in the Sistema de Autoridade Marítima - Maritime Autority System.

Some pictures from the Navy Divers:

PS: in Portugal if you want to be a professional diver, you have to take a course in the Portuguese Navy, in the Divers School.
