They were probably sold to Iran pre-revolution.

I was just wondering, does anyone know how easy it is to reverse engineer something as complicated as a weapon or weapon system? Because a lot of countries seem to be doing it.

There is nothing "complicated" in reverse engineering firearms.Even a monkey wit engineering BSc can do it.
The question is,are they using the correct materials?

I never said it was complicated So, basically, all you have to do is get a hold of a m16, take it apart, and with the right equipment, you should be able to build copy, except ofcourse the material issue. Seems easy enough.

It is based on the Chinese CQ rifle, which in turn is allmost identical to the M16A1 Model 613.

It is know as the S-5.56 in Iran and is used by higher quality infantry units, including airborne and recon forces.

I believe there was a video about it some months ago showing airborne soldiers equipped with it boarding helicopters / aircraft.

Oh, I forgot you also asked for an opinion. The M16 is a good weapon, but it creates a resupply problem (different ammo) and has no real use. The AKM and G3 which are currently in use are a little more reliable / need less maintainance. The G3 already has the range and accuracy the AKM lacks and the AKM is cheap. Producing the Chinese 'high quality' AK's, the Type 81, in Iran would've been a better choice in my opinion. However the M16 is cool and says 'In your face!' to the US and that may also count in Iran.

A Norinco Model 311 - I bought two of them a while back. They're identical to this rifle - right down to the ****ty plastic grip - an original AR grip fits right on though!

Copycatting the copycat? Cool, cool... Does that make them, like copycopycats or doublecopycats?

It has wild-west touch on it with that revolver-type handle and rifle-buttstock.
