    There was that saper's rule of thumb I've read in some smart book. Rule was stating that if you can blow some amount of soil with given amount of explosives, to blow up n times more soil you need n^3 more explosives... So yes digging to deep may spoil the surprise...

    I remember reading somewhere that the blast is intensified the deeper you bury it as the shock from the blast has nowhere to go but up. I assume there is a limit on the depth however.
