[*******black]India[*******black]'s most notorious fugitive, Veerappan, carried a $33,000 reward on his head and was wanted by the police in connection with 120 murders. The tall, wiry man with a fierce handlebar moustache was considered the country's most ruthless and daring bandit. Veerappan began his career in crime as an ivory poacher and killed his first elephant when he was only 14. Since then, popular legend says he has killed about 2,000 elephants. From elephant poaching, Veerappan graduated to sandalwood smuggling, kidnapping and murder. He operated mainly in the forests bordering the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, though he had occasionally struck in Kerala too. His victims included senior forest and police officials, a minister and many villagers, who he suspected of being informers. He lured his victims into the forest, tortured them, beheaded them, riddled them with bullets and blew them up with grenades. He kidnapped ministers and film stars and businessmen at will for huge ransoms, but his bread and butter came from selling ivory and sandalwood. There were at least a few thousand policemen and paramilitary forces after him. He eluded them for 20 years to be finally killed on October 18, 2004

Default Operation Cocoon!

To tackle the bandit, two state governments (Karnataka and Tamilnadu) together formed a Special Task Force (STF) consisting of Police commandos. The STF planned Operation Cocoon that saw the end of Veerappan. The operation was led by STF chief Vijay Kumar.

It was a meticulously planned operation. Prior to the operation STF successfully infiltrated Veerappan's gang and monitered the gangs activities and movements. STF men had established themselves in various villages and hamlets, posing as beggars, mendicants, bus drivers and cowherds.
Some of the men even spent time as prisoners in jails to gather useful intelligence.

Operation Cocoon' was the result of 10 months of planning and three weeks of meticulous preparation. But the operation lasted only 25 minutes. Veerappan was on his way in an ambulance to get treatment for an eye ailment. The ambulance was actually an STF vehicle which was driven by a STF commando who infiltrated in to the gang.

A 35-member team lay in wait at a nearby village. Some of the commandos were hidden in a reinforced tanker lorry parked by the road; others had taken position atop a nearby school.
When challenged the gang initially did not respond. A second warning to surrender was greeted with gunfire. The STF retaliated with stun grenades and gunfire. Before this the driver of the ambulance, an STF operative, made good his escape as planned. Veerappan died on the spot.

I think India's most wanted is DAWOOD. Verappan was oviously wanted and was among the top five but not the top most one.
Now it's good that he is dead otherwise one day he would surely have become a politician like his othe similar peers.

Default Operation Cocoon!

There is lot of confusion regarding veerappans death. Some claim he commited suicide, others say he asked his fellow gang memeber to shoot him (rather than getting killed by STF) and another group says he was shot at point blank range by the STF. Watever the claims and counter claims are, the people nor the government are interested in finding the truth. Conclusion: He deserved death!
