Currently i run the Scout light with the 6P adapter with a CREE 200lumens lamp that give good reliability, and sustain run time. 200 lumens are a bit bright for my taste, but it makes for a decent perimeter gun.
I know a few folks who swear by the M series lights for carbine use, though these individuals have them mounted on "trunk guns" that do not see serious field use/abuse. Offered as an opinion, I prefer metal body lights that have been extensively combat proven. I have a Blackhawk Legacy 12X with a quick detach mount that I had every intent of using for the same purpose as your 6P, though much to my dismay, no one makes a pressure pad adaptor for it and I prefer my light mounted at either 11 or 1.

Legacy 12x is a big light, I like my rifle a bit lighter, but that 12x will definitely take some serious beating.

SOCOM did buy into the M3x system for the next generation combat light for the SOPMOD block 2 kit, but this is a modififed M3x in compare to the standard M3x you see on the market.

Have you tried the Vltor off sit light mount? you can mount it on the 11 or 1 o'clock position and still activate the light via the rear thumb switch.

So there is a mil-spec M3 floating around, not commercially though I imagine. I love the Mseries for handguns, I own the UTL, m3 and m6...have been thinking about going to the surfire version, though after your comment on the 200 I may do some more asking around before I do.

Its a heavy piece, which is why I like having the quick mount option....put it on if I need or think I will need it... I have not looked into the Vltor mount, currently using a GG&G but Im going to look into it now, thanks for the info....Blackhawk needs to get on the ball and make a pressure pad adaptor.

As of this year, the new Scout light with the 110 Lumens are about the standard, anything brighter, you literally blind yourself in a confined area.
The new Scout light looks like it will have to replace my current setup... I just wish it wasn't as expensive, but you get what you pay for. Everything SF I have ever handled, is top quality.

Buy a Vltor light mount, its like 60.00....

Buy SureFire G2 LED with the upgraded Cree bulb...35.00 for the G2....and like 20.00 for the CREE off e-bay(get Solarforce)

LED not only last longer on one set of batteries, it will also take the abuse the rifle can dish out.

Total.....approx. 120.00... output is in the 200 Lumens and run time is like 2+ hours..

    Kind of like this

You do know who uses an upgraded version of the M3X/M6X for rifles now right? I'll shut up now.

Upgraded? Like "not commercially available" or "not what I recommended, but from the same manufacturer...” If there is an upgraded version that I am unaware of, perhaps you should recommend that…… I was merely speaking from my own personal experience, its right there in the quote. I love the M series lights but not on rifles.

For aftermarket upgrades, the G2 is a poor host because of it's Nitrelon body. G2 does not dissipate heat very well for LEDs over 80 lumens and high output LEDs tend to get damaged because of that heat build up.
SF 6P is the best host for LED upgrades because it's all metal which dissipates heat very well and the cheapest from the SF all aluminum light models.

I usually don't keep my combat light running 100% of the time, nor 50% of the time, i spot, and move, spot and move, strob some and move... my light only come on at the absoulte monent required. usually running light on is more of military style where once you bang the first house, the entire neighborhood knows you are coming.. so lights on all the time in a house is what the Marine likes to do....

so with the lights on and off in quick bursts, the heat does not build up as badly in the glass filled plastic body as you would running such set up as a handheld where you can run thelight for upto 10-20 minutes to illuminate of serach for something.

but i do agree with you that the 6P is the best host, that is why I get 6P LED and run a CREE lamp in my setup. Matter of fact that is what I have on my AK74 at this time.

but for a little more economy set up, the G2 is not a bad choice...

What type of batteries do you guys use? The disposable ones or rechargeable?

I'm worried about untested, possible low quality rechargeables on ebay.

I just bought a cree R2 for my surefire g2 from ebay. Supposed output is about 240 lumens seller says, and it is blinding bright. I'm very happy with it. There is no heat coming out from the led bulb so I'm very happy that it won't melt the plastic head unlike my worries with the p61 lamp.

I too have the G2 (just picked up a 2nd one for my AR). I have an old First SamCo light holder that fits on the rail, but I was looking at YHM's site today and saw these. http://www.yhm.net/store/rails.html (scroll to the bottom)

Pretty good price for what looks to be a solid product.
