Hunting and Fishing

Every fall I go deer hunting with my old man, been every year since I was big enough to shoot. I hope it's something we can keep doing for a long time.



Last year, it was rainy, not too cold though, so there was lot of activity, and we didn't make too much noise.





That little bastard was tailing a decent-sized spike, which I had spotted. I aimed and grey-brown fur filled my scope so I shot right behind the shoulder. Turns out I was aiming at the wrong one. I cursed myself for that one, but it turned out delicious and tender.



The range, first day, checking the zero.





Not quite the trophy buck, but a beautiful one nonetheless. It made up for the little one, though I shot this one first. The place we have been going for the pas few years has a 2-animal limit per hunter, and does are fair game, even though I never shoot if there's a calf nearby.



By late fall, the riverbeds are almost dry and we can go pretty far upriver using ATVs.

Okay, okay!! geez gun nuts...

There are two actually in those pics.

One is a Browning .270 bolt action, stainless with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X. It's lightweight, and the optic is blinding clear. It does kick a bit.

The other is a Remington .30-06 semi-auto with a Meopta 4-10X, Czech optic. It's pretty nice, good light but the crosshair posts are a bit thick for my taste.

Oh yeah, the cartridge: I use mostly Remington Express Core-Lokt 150gr. with the 30-06. For the .270 I don't really have a favorite, every year I try a different kind, check at the range that it doesn't mess up my zero and use that. I do like the Federal Nosler Partition, "Premium Vitalshok" they call it, which sounds very deadly.... I have tried both 130gr. and 150gr. but I haven't been able to test the difference, if any, beyond range shooting.

Little in terms of bells and whistles. Slings with well-oiled swivels, lens caps, etc.

He has a Savage 99 in 300 savage. The rifle belonged to a friend's dad. She has a Win LA in 45 Colt.

I myself don't hunt (I am thinking about doing so this coming seaon), but I like to come along with my dad and uncle, when they go hunting, to a 160 acre plot of land we have near Warsaw, MO.
This is during November deer season.

Got a heart from it, which what I was waiting for like a vulture. Slice that up and simmer it in broth with onions and you are good to go. I also got its liver which is excellent sliced up, covered in flour, and fried in olive oil. I am the only one who eats the variety meats. When I was back in school during the week, my dad got a doe, which slightly flustered me because the does have better variety meats (especially kidneys).

A side note, What gets non-hunters all unhappy and wanting to ban hunting is display of "animal parts". Hunter safety and awareness classes in Orygone stresses being discreet.

Let people know there will be a little "gore" or just don't.

Sorry about that. Would have thought that hunters would have not much minded a sight like that and that poeple opposed to such things would stay away. Hell, you see stuff like that at specialty supermarkets.

Ira, No problem. Being a open forum, one never knows. Tastefully is better. It is a issue here in Orygone. The Dog hunters are unable to hunt because of urbanites infected with emotionalism. Fish and Game really tries to promote, hunters to be understanding of this.

I would rather play it safe. I have been watching the anti-hunters slowly over the years erode people's ability to hunt.

Yeah, I know that animals are often colorblind but in Europe hunting has huge historical base and orenge color would be a bit strange...

They should know that legal hunters are one of the biggest environmentalists out there that actually do something.
Here, Missouri is just not Missouri without hunting and fishing. Per year, the revenue from licenses (especially during November) actually surpasses that of all the pro sports teams in KC and STL combined, and it the primary funder of the Conservation Department. At least in KC, many urbanites actually consider deer a pest, hence a urban hunting season (practically, archery only) voted for a few years ago. Plus, as evident by the migration of cars, urbanites make a up sizable (not majority but large enough) portion of hunters anyways.
Whitetail deer are actually slightly overpopulated here due to lack of natural predators, so more seasons (most doe-only) are actually being added and November season was extended by a week.
