    Found this article written by my Grandfather in the 30's about his trip to north Queensland. They caught the train up and back without tickets, and actually did it rough, it didn't come through in the article. Not much infrastructure back then. Included the gun prices for fun.

    ^^^ Fantastic article. Thank you very much for sharing it. I see the 'dreaded stone fish' hasn't lost its fear inducing qualities as the years have passed by. Those things really are nasty little bleeders.

    Thought i would share these photos of a mate. They went out in western new south wales, in the last few weeks, apparently the area has a plague of goats. He started out using the 223 but stepped up to 308 as the 223 wasn't always doing the job on the goats.

    Sorry for the image quality, i had to transfer it between a few different formats. Check out the size of the billy on the back of the ute.

    Adult male goats can drop some serious weight onto the scale if left to feed themselves up.

    Very envious of the catch - love goat curry with a passion - nice strong taste to the meat. As for the rifles - some nice calibres floating about for those shots where some extra legs are needed: goats are wiley creatures and make for a great days stalking.

    .25-06 isn't a very good deer gun, I've shot deer with them in the vitals and have had a bitch of a time finding them cuz they ran so damn far after the shot. 7mm-08 has been a little different, I've seen elk dropped by that caliber at 200 yards.

    @T3ngu I've shot goats in NZ with a 6.5x55 - good medicine.

    7mm-08 works on red deer pretty good according to mates in NZ. Like all these things, realistic appraisal of what the round can do and placement is the key plus the self discipline to not take a shot if you cant gaurantee a good hit. Unless you are taking long shots in open country I'd go 7mm. Its a nice round, doesnt kick much and theres a good range of pills for it.

    beautiful country Tengu, makes it look like an african safari

    I cant seem to get excited about the deer season this year, its half way done, I havent gone once yet (ususally I would have at least 5-6days done in bush by now, baiting/scouting included) only day I can make it is this Sat, the last day of gun season
    if I dont get any Ill need a new bow to try to fill the tag

    Alright, I know this isn't something that I should admit on a forum but I missed a shot at an 8 pointer with my flintlock today. About 100 yards, not much cover, he frigging turned at the last second, something in the woods to his left spooked him. Probably a goddamned squirrel. No blood trail, no nothing. I could tell I missed. That's what I get for playing Last of the Mohicans in my backyard. It is fun though...I have better luck hitting them with my truck.

    My cubicle neighbour at work was joking about the 5000 pound bullet just yesterday.

    Sorry to hear about your miss.

    How many deer have ýou taken in your lifetime, ballpark ? Just curious.
    Of course I was not there, but no blood trail means nothing. Have you had a scent hound take a look, or nose, whatever ?
    Cheers,
    IJ.
