Combination switch yo!
Special thanks to wagon for minding the shop.
Well I know we still have some older Ford Taurus drivers out there. Those cars had an array of transmission issues. Well fixed one today for $500 that most shops would have just recommended replacement. These old things are not worth that so I took a stab at this one. It was a 96 Taurus 3.0l VIN S with a 4XAN transmission. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear shifted fine no slip and fluid level was proper. 4th(OD) was out, as a matter of fact it would not shift into 4th at all only 3rd. Had some codes can't remember the exact OBDII number at the moment but the definitions were; Shift solenoid c performance and 4th gear ratio incorrect.
Long story short, I removed the side trans pan and then removed the valve body. Fourth gear shift valve retainer was broken as the TSB said due to the incorrect size retainer being used. It did burr the out portion of the bore but this is were the retainer is located so no circuits run to this area. Updated retainer, spring and gaskets finished the job. Car runs great and saved the customer from buying a transmission.
Nope, I was a first year apprentice automotive technician with a Ford Canada dealership. Lots of LOF's, tire mountings/rotations, interior work, brake services/replacements etc. Lot of the Tauruses that came in were quite corroded (likely from all our road salt) and it was difficult working with anything threaded.![]()
Yeah I was being paid minimum wage ($6.50/hr?) and poundin out LOF's in .7-.8...thats a lot of oilchanges in a day. These were full LOFs too, 32 point inspection +TSB's +full brake service/tire rotation if I remember correctly...id have to dig out old timesheets to be sure. One thing that really bugged me was that they would pay the mechanics $35 to do a PDI, but they would make me do them for free(and in less time) when the day was slow. On top of that they expected me to go thousands of dollars into debt with the SnapOn truck that showed up once a week.![]()
I buy something every week off the Snap-On truck, can't help myself. Been doing that for over a decade.
ok i am back, same car with the same old ****
the 92 civic dx decided it still isn't going to start even after throwing a new battery, fuel pump and fuel relay. I am banging my head against the wall on this one I have checked the car, there is no spark and the pump does not kick on when the ignition is turned. the only things i found yesterday were a popped fuse (the "backup" fuse) and a burnt out light bulb. I have not replaced the distributor nor have i messed with the ecm or ignition control module...frustration with the car is running high being i have already spent over 200 dollars trying to fix this problem. I could really use your guys help on this one
^^^Hondas can be a pain... they are reliable but can be complicated. Is your car efi? Does the computer control fuel and spark? It might be time to chase a workshop manual and start poking around to find what has died. That should stop you throwing bags of parts at it.
Looks like I may be getting an FC3S RX7... anyone here do rotary (13B) rebuilds before?
