Saabs are OK. They can be a b1tch to work on at times but hey... so are 'lesser' vehicles. (Ever tried replace rear brake pads on pre 1988 Falcons?) My favourite example - I had to service the instrument cluster in a mid '90's 9000aero (turbo). To get the cluster out you started by removing the speaker covers on both sides of the dash. That car has some of my sockets rattling around its dash.

I hate them, damn big headaches to work on. Saab engines in Saturns and Cadillac Cateras leak oil so much you just need to change the filter. People that maintain a car well, fix oil leaks and other problems at the first sign of trouble tend to have good experience with Saab.

If you must go with a yuppie car buy a Volvo.

What is your favourite OvloV model, Shocker? I'm told that the 240series, 940 & 850 are good models. Apparently the V6 models are $hit and the 740 are OK but just not as durable as the 240. (One of my customers is a Eurobox specialist - he sees lots of Volvo models.)

They seem to be pretty tough old boxes. I've always entertained evil thoughts of stuffed a V8 (eg 1uz) into an old 240 wagon body - and then going out hunting on Friday nights.

OK... so the dash lights and the tail lights only work when I press the brake pedal... WTF?

Everything else works. Car is a 1988 RX7.

First, check all the fuses. I suspect what may have happened is a lamp or lamp socket has failed - gone short - blown the fuse and you get what you have now. I've seen it happen! Stop/tail bulbs are actually 2 lamps in the same body (usually).

I gotta get a manual for the car. Buying used cars in Los Angeles typically means you bought the car, AND THAT'S IT. I can only find two of the fuse boxes (I think there are 3-4), and one is missing the damn cover that shows what the hell is going on inside (kick panel). All of the fuses look good so far...

    Thank you Sir Wagon

Haha, I just watched this last week. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M83OHR7OLfo
It's a great old show, I hope it'll help you out.

Shocker, what is your opinion on switching back 'n forth between standard oil and synthetic.
A friend was asking me the other day and I couldn't give him a 100% answer.
I've always been led to believe that synthetic "burns smaller" than regular and will cause all of your seals to leak.
    What's your take?

Someone recently told me that the "leaks" from synthetic oil was just the old oil being drained out from putting the synthetic in...but I don't know.

Nah, I think with a lot of synthetics they don't keep your seals as "plump" as semi skinned would. Though they may have found a way around that... though it might depend on whther the manufacturer intended running with syn or not.
I would be sitting on the fence whther to run sysn on an old engine or not. I like short oil changes, some of the "long service intervals" have been shown as big time failures.

Ok here is the deal. Synthetic oil has a smaller molecule than natural oil. Thus if it is used in an engine with wear that has never used synthetic it WILL leak. If you by a new car and want to use synthetic go ahead. Synthetic has heat absorption properties that far exceed regular oil but ask yourself do you really need it?

Not one vehicle I own has synthetic except for my race car. My truck has over 300,000 miles, uses no oil, leaks no oil and runs like a champ. Valvoline 10w30 or 5w30 is my reccomendation for the average car. Of course high performance engines with very tight tolerances really should have synthetic but regular oil has worked just fine for 100 years now so I wonder why would you spend the money. Some would say you can go longer between oil changes but the same contaminants get in the synthetic oil. Engines today run much cleaner and going 5000 miles between changes is no problem so long as you avoid the ethanol blends and seek out pure gasoline.

Bottom line is if your car has wear and never used synthetic it is best to stick with the good stuff from the ground.
