The frigate SPS 'Méndez Núñez' left its base at Ferrol on 17 March to participate in the SIRIO-12 Air Force exercices.
This year is the most important of spanish armed forces whose aim is to achieve air superiority in our air space, to prevent their use to a potential enemy. In this framework is particularly relevant use of the AEGIS combat system of the frigate, which makes it an invaluable tool in this type of operation.
For this, she was deployed from 20 to 22 March south of the Balearic Islands and in the Alboran Sea. During this period was fully integrated into the Air Defense System and worked with the Air Operations Center Air Force in maintaining a complete presence at the national airspace through the detection, classification and identification of contacts.
During simulated hostile attack she was able to fight against fighter jets F-18 and Harrier AV-8B PLUS, acting as enemies that threatened the country.
This navigation also allowed collaborations with the Coast Artillery Regiment nº 4 during the passage of the Straits of Gibraltar and with the HNLMS 'Van Amstel' in back transit.

Organized by the Air Combat Command, in the same involved the aircrafts of all combat units and combat support Air Force and many of the auxiliary forces. The Command and Control System has been instrumental in developing the exercise, in which Armed Forces units implement different forms of employment of airpower. This is the most important exercise conducted by the Air Force throughout the year, both the number of aircraft, facilities and resources involved, as affected by the geographical size.
During the SIRIUS are implemented Air Defense plans that are not activated in time of peace. The purpose of this phase is to increase the level of training of Air Combat Command in the areas of command and control both fixed and deployable facilities.
