Folks,

When I see photos of La Legion, I think that US soldiers are now fighting the battle of the mountain posts like the braave La Legion did 8 decades ago in North Africa -- ie including a post that almost got over run. History repeating it self. Only a different country and different soldiers and a different time.

    Uniformity of the Legion

Millán ASTRAY, excellent psychologist, was concerned from the outset to equip their legionnaires martial of a uniform, attractive and comfortable at the same time. Already announced in the first poster hitch: "The uniform is striking

A O.C. dated September 4, 1920 provided that the garments had to compose the uniform of the legionnaires. They specified: ... "mainly tend to be practical, comfortable, colourful and economic." Here is the list of garments that were to compose this as OC:

-- As head of garment, hat and Teresa, being allowed to test the straw hat in summer.
-- The warrior is khaki green, with neck and back pockets.
-- The pants of the same color and shape breeches.
-- Leggings, bandages, the same color as the dress.
-- Shoes, hazelnut color, using two types, one for field and headquarters or to another camp.
-- The correaje, backpack, bag side, and so on. Shall models used by the Infantry.
-- A pledge of shelter will be the capote-blanket.
-- The head of the body, listening to the economic board will propose the appropriate uniform to adapt as definitive.
-- The chiefs and officers serving in the Third, the use of this body.

On these proposals as garments regulations, practice and careful study, introducing some changes that will complete the silhouette of Legionary flying colours. So the straw hat is replaced by canvas pespunteada, much more practical, comfortable and durable. The boot espadrilles, taken from the Regulars, becomes general purpose and moves to the sandal, proposed by the founder as "shoe rest." For the first campaigns adopting the English correaje canvas, type "Mills", which had given such excellent results in the great European War and, above all, gives entry to the immortal legionnaires shirt that was introduced on a proposal by the Commander D . Adolfo Vara del Rey, sports shirt open only until half the chest and neck with open collar that practice makes legionnaires lead back over the warrior, thus solving two problems: the convenience and the cleaning. Another garment legionnaires par excellence has to establish the gorrillo of borlita, also known as "Elizabethan" by recalling the old cap barracks of the troops of Elizabeth II, the founder told him: "is a classic and castizo who used the Spanish military Luengo years. It has a special attraction, is funny, and very successful martial. It is, of course, infinitely more aesthetic that Bonet circulars.

In campaigns from 1921 to 1925 the legionnaire consolidates its silhouette and must remain so until 1938, when adopting the pants bombacho; up our time little has changed its appearance; hat alternating with gorrillo, bandages with pernera abotonada; warrior with the shirt. Towards 1927 is introduced correaje leather, in an identical manner to canvas, and portfolio-backpack, both garments change its color to black, as well as footwear, with the reforms of 38. The gorrillo is adorned with the emblem legionnaire in classes and ranks, and conclude shortly after the war, adopting the barboquejo in gorrillo, this seems barboquejo which was introduced by the motorized units of the Legion (to prevent them M) and subsequently adopted by the rest of the Corps, always alert to changes that shape "spirit de corps" of elite troops.

The detailed rules for uniformity of the Army published in January 1943 specifies only, referring to The Legion, that "the only special garment used by the Chiefs, Officers and NCOs of these troops is" Teresa "and later ,

adds that the uniform of classes troops will be equal to that of troops on foot. According to this must be thinking that in the minds of the legislature was to equate the uniform legionnaire to the rest of the Infantry, probably for economic reasons, given the shortage of means of the time, not appearing in that regulation even gorrillo. Either way it had met only in part, because the Legion returned to their garments green, and even introduced some new, as the loneta light green uniform for officers and monkey instruction color similar to the troops . But certainly for some years (1943-44) officers brought the khaki uniform with neck capotes were closed and all of this color, both at official and in the troops.

This was governed by O.C. - November 26, 1923. For Official Heads and the emblem would be embroidered in gold thread in the center of the right pocket of the warrior, and under him, could carry a red bar for each completed year of service at The Legion, for every 5 years would be replaced many other bars by a golden red (red bars are 2 mm. browned and 5 mm.) placed in the first place. Shortly thereafter approve the use of this distinctive classes and ranks, but instead go embroidered in gold thread should go in their natural colors, and bars for every 5 years would be yellow.

As prerequisites to this distinctive look of antiquity, it was necessary:

-- A year and spent 20 facts weapon.
-- Two years and spent 10 facts weapon.
-- Being hurt, being useless or invalid.
-- A year of permanence and wounded in an act of weapons.
-- Being injured in two facts weapon.
It follows that this could only lead distinguishing those who had taken an active part in the fighting

The campaigns Ifni-Sahara and the garrison of those territories impose the adoption of new clothes, taking some of them large roots. It takes the hat visor to campaign, with the addition of siroquera; re-sandals ( "Nail"); introduces the boot "Chiruca" canvas with rubber soles to replace the boot-espadrilles; adopting Campaign mimic the dress, the diamond-door emblems ( "Pepito"), etc..

The various changes of uniformity arisen in the Army also affect the Legion, but always with some delay, because the legionnaire very attached to their old clothes uniform. That was in 1952 authorized the use of long pants to ride in 1958 was abolished the high boots, short breeches and leather ceñidor, although The Legion continues with them until 1966. In 1955 the long capote "riding" is replaced by another shorter and with lapels and, for the troops, the Tabard replaces the capote.

The uniform campaign, adopted by parachute troops in 1955, (camisoles and pants) is copied by The Legion, and although in 1968 declaring the regulatory environment for Army, The Legion had been using it since 1966.

The eighties was a time of great changes in the uniformity of the Spanish Army. In May 1886 an order for the overall Army uniforms substantially amending existing ones; many reforms are introduced. All these reforms, tailored to the Legion, are contained in an order April 1987, it changed gala uniforms and walk. The currencies disappear from the garment head is Teresian, gorrillo or beret; warrior in the currencies cease to be in the cuff and become carried on the shoulder, these disappears emblem legionnaires' in the liner carried shoulder color uniform (green legionnaire) except the components of BOEL that carry green of the COE in the neck-flap of the jacket is, in cash, the emblem legionnaires' but are retained shields arm (distinguishing Third destination) these are modified, as well as the distinctive flag or destination in unit (so-called "nuggets"). All these changes must be observed from June 30, 1988.

In November 1991 adopting a belt for gala, this must be embodied to live with golden heads and official and black patent leather for NCOs and other ranks in the plates over and over has to bear the emblem of the Army.

On February 7, 1994 was issued a new General Instruction that specifically regulates uniforms legionnaires. In this regulation uniforms are grouped into two types: Representation and Functional.

In the first (gala, walk, etc..) Accommodates peculiarities of legionnaire traditional uniform, respecting own clothes and colors of this body. In the second (mainly uniformity campaign) seeks assimilation to the rest of the Army, so that in case of war, the enemy does not have data to identify units, and at the same time, our uniforms are as similar as possible to those of other NATO countries.

In the aforementioned General Instruction uniforms are grouped in several categories or chapters: Gala to walk (including acts of Special Match); Journal learners; Gala in training; Campaign and Labour.

Under that title been grouped an ambitious group of chapters ranging from the uniformity until songbook legionnaire passing his scripts and banners, on Saturday Legionary, and many other contents that invite you to discover.

In 1938 he had given a regulation for the Legion of uniformity, since the Corps Subinspección there is a collection of photographs that represent a legionnaire, front and back, dressed in a different series of garments.

The detailed rules for uniformity of the Army published in January 1943 specifies only, referring to The Legion, that "the only special garment used by the Chiefs, Officers and NCOs of these troops is" Teresa "and later ,

It was during the decades of the 40's and 50 when the uniform legionnaire acquires its biggest Vista and elegance: gorrillo with barboquejo; high boots with spurs and flexible canopy; lighter colored long war; wide black leather belts with buckles emblems of draughts; crackers varied and vibrant colour; galas of gastadores, cornets and drums, and so on.

An interesting point is the clarification of the use of the emblem on the uniform of legionnaire tour, added to the bars stay in the Corps.
