Did anyone say that ? We were talking about Maserati.

In the last few decades Maserati has been raped and was leaded mostly by people who just wanted to make a (quick) buck. Kind of what happened to Mercedes during the Schrempp years, just much longer and harder.

The Quattroporte really is sharing alot with the Lancia Thesis, that's not even a joke. Skyhook, interior... Some of it is very obvious.

Apart from that it simply is a horrible vehicle. You can pretty much forget all models before the 2008 facelift. The electronics in these cars weren't just a bit faulty here and there, they were a complete desaster. Ontop of that the Navigation/Entertainment and AC was a joke, and the performance was nothing breathtaking.

It wasn't meant as a joke. But they're lovely nonetheless.

Well for one, it's a good way to get stuck in the middle of the road because your battery died in slow moving traffic and when it's cold outside. Happened to a guy from work in his 3 week old BMW.
And all those start stops can't be good for your engine.

Not to mention it is annoying.

Yep AND you don't need it. If you have enough dough for a BMW, the extra fuel won't hurt your wallet that much and you won't save the planet.

While it is a old concept, Start-Stop-Automatic in mass-productions cars has just been started in the last few years. It did have some problems at the beginning.

However, there is no reasonable damage to the engine, even on very high mileage. Certain parts (starter for example) have to be modified but in context of how much fuel you can save with such a "easy" system it does make sense.

Even Porsche and Ferrari will/are adopting this.

I'll take your word for it but I can't help but wonder if the major reason for those companies to be doing this is that they otherwise wouldn't be able to comply by the ever stricter norms and laws on fuel usage and exhaust gasses with their big and powerful engines. Basically so that they are covered legally and the numbers look good in brochures.

    It works OK on hybrids.

They (the car manufacturers) don't give a damn about how expensive, unreliable or difficult to repair something is... as long as it lasts the warranty period, looks good on paper and keeps the 'greeny' happy.

I drove a 2011 VW Touareg last week and it was just weird with the stop start auto. But the bloke who owns it said he barely notices it now and reckons its great. Does anyone know exactly what is different with the starter motor?

I would expect the ring gear would be bigger/strengthened/harder and the starter would be larger and built to 'last'... well, as well as a 'modern VW' can last.

I was guessing taller gearing and a different soleniod set up to reduce burning out the contacts. As for a 'modern VW' I took to calling it the Kombi. lol
