My High School job was at the movie theater - box office was a favorite place to pay with counterfeit bills. I've never got one, but a few of my co-workers got duped into taking a fake 20 - reasonably well made counterfeits though (it was before the age of readily available commercial laser printers), made the old way.
Cashing in counterfeit bills is no "get rich quick" scheme - "couples" (usually) would work businesses up and down the street so I don't know what their daily take was. Now, these bills were well made - it took actual testing to distinguish the fakes - my preferred method is to "scratch president's collar" with my thumbnail, to test the pattern.
Counterfeit money printed on laser printer is a big laugh as it's not going to fool anybody outside of fifth grade.
I have confiscated/or returned with a big "FAKE" plenty of fake 50's 20's ,10's and even a fake 5$ when i had my 1st job.
And that's in developed Canada. The old bills are still in circulation which leaves room for fraud.
You need a good printer, and paper very similar to the bills. As for UV ink , cat urine is used.
The United States Secret Service have a favourite trick when they give seminars to banks in Asia. They get the bank to bring out their best counting and counterfeit detection machine, and put in a wad of US $100s. The machines clear the notes, and the US Secret Service Agents advise that the bills put through the machine are seized counterfeits. So there are counterfeits, and then there are..*counterfeits*.
The US 5 and 10 dollar bills are some of the easiest to duplicate. I have had countless numbers of them passed through to me and some you would never know.
Canadian bills are a lot harder to duplicate because of the Intaglio method of printing we use and the fact that we mix colours on our bills.
I have had some really crappy attempts at fakes come to me as well. One was printed on toilet paper.
The Australian $50 and other bills are made of durable plastic. Very difficult to counterfeit. Nothing is impossible of course.
I saw a guy in front of me try and pay at a seven eleven with Monopoly money. The clerk was tired and started counting out change before he realized what was going on.
I wouldnt want to try and forge an Australian note, thin plastic with a clear section in the corner (which has the denomination embossed in it), when held up to a light, a section reveals a seven pointed star (off the Australian flag), theres UV ink of the Australian coat of arms and on some notes, there is very small printed words, eg on the $10 the start of 'the man from snowy river' is printed
The US old $10 bill design was the most common, and easy, forgery. At two of my jobs i held it was common for us to come across forged $10 and $20 bills. $50 and $100 bills are more rare, and harder to use, as most business have a policy in place which demands they be checked.
