I don't know why Serbia just doesn't buy S-300PMU-2's from Russia and get Russia to lend 200 Su-27sm's and just KICK NATO out of there!!
Well that's fine too but I guess it couldn't since there was a bloody civil war.
Now apparently there's going to be an independent Kosovo. So how about not arguing about if it's Serbia or Albania but making it a nation for Kosovars, the people of Kosovo?
Kosovo is no more just a NATO issue anymore. There are plenty of non-NATO countries involved and it's a major security concern for EU.There is no why this why that. NATO made a promise. And they want to deliver. NATO is never wrong. It will be a humilation for NATO to back down. If NATO backs down now then where else they can back down. It is not about serbs or albanians any more. It is NATO pride.
But sure it would be a huge disappointment for everyone if there was another war or genocide.

Those right wing parties that are for Kosovo independance are Albanian?
It's true that Kosovars don't want to unite with Albania. And this will be another source of conflict, Albania wanting to annex it. Rather complicated stuff. Now apparently there's going to be an independent Kosovo. So how about not arguing about if it's Serbia or Albania but making it a nation for Kosovars, the people of Kosovo?
The way I see it is this: huge majority of Kosovos inhabitants TODAY are Albanian and they want independence so let them have it. It doesn't help to live in the past, what is important is the situation today. It's about time the Balkans start looking at the future, and solve their differences peacefully. It would seem that Kosovo won't be ethnically Serbian in the future, so what should happen is that the Serbs stop dreaming about irrelevant things and concentrate building their own nation. There has been enough nationalism, stupidity and violence in the Balkans, and the peoples in the region should start working for better future.
IMO the situation is a bit similar with Karelia for Finns. It used to be an important and central area for Finns, but it's now inhabited by the Russians. Maybe it's "wrong", but though luck, the area belongs now to the people who live there and it probably will never be Finnish again. Instead of bitching about it it's best just to forget it and continue with what we have since there's no way all those people could or should be deported from their homes.
Declaration of independecy is (will) be unilateral step. UN, EU and NATO does not (at least so they say) will not tolerate unilateral steps. If Kosovars declare independecy, Serbs in areas with their mayority have all the same right to declare independency. But then again the same right goes to Basks in Spain, Irish in Northern Ireland, and so on.

As a matter of fact, there are only 17000 peacekeepers deployed to Kosovo at the moment. However, it took less than three months back in 1999 to send a 50000-men strong force into the province, and what I intended to say was that the armies of NATO do have a little bit more manpower than the Serbian forces.
By the way, you've just answered your question why such a deal will never be accomplished.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Sovereignty for some
But none for you
These arrogant Serbs really need to learn to be tolerant. Who are they to complain if they were ethnically cleansed from their own territory? Who are they to question the authority of the International Community, all praises be to it, if it wants to unilaterally declare Kosovo independent, thereby virtually ensuring the destruction of remaining Serbian communities in the province? Preposterous!
So,if Kosovo Albanians declare independance what will they get in reality??
Absolutely nothing,Russians will stop their efforts to become member of UN,Serbia will impose sanctions (70% products in Kosovo shops are MADE IN SERBIA) ,Kosovo citizens will have problems with movement through out the region and Europe (a lot of Kosovo Albanian diaspora helps their families in Kosovo),north Kosovo will totaly separate etc.
We must not forget that Kosovo is much more developed than Albania ,infranstructure is bad and mountain terrain makes more connections with Albania to expensive and not worthly. So from the point of free moving of people and capital opened Serbian border is very importnat for Kosovo economy.
Is U.S.A and EU ready to throw money into "whole without bottom",same mistake like ex-YU made??
There are more disadvantages for quick Kosovo independace, any stable Kosovo solution must involve Serbia, simple as that.
The trouble in Kosovo started when Serbian regime took away its autonomy in 1989, for almost 10 years Albanians tried a peaceful resistance to get that autonomy back, it seems that the peaceful resistance have been forgotten, if you people would read more about peace then for war you probably would know about that.

the Russians are not going to fight a world war over Kosovo
it's simply not important enough to them or pretty much anyone else
hell I doubt the Serbs are willing to go to war over it either at this point

I agree, the problem in a nutshell... The Russians could support independance declarations in Moldavia, Ossetia and Abkhazia (and in that last case, they would destaboilize Georgia). Certainly our (the West's) best interests are in reaching an agreement with the Serbs, and, beyond them, with the Russians. I'm asking, what have we to gain with this support for a free Kosovo? Stability? I'm already seeing the Republika Serpska splitting Bosnia, and the Kosovo Serbs declaring the independance of the province's northern part... and I won't even talk about Macedonia. I'm sorry, but if the UCK is to pay the price, then so be it.
That silly confrontational "strategy" has to stop, before we are in deep trouble... I am astounded by the shallowness of our rulers' strategical analyses.
