They appear to be the M16/XM148 variant, the foreunner to the more familiar M203 version.Originally Posted by Jelle H.
Initially trialled by the 3rd Squadron SASR in 1966 it was highly popular and adopted quickly.
This version can be seen in use as late as 1971 interestingly.

Well, he looks about 20 years older and 100 pounds heavier than all the other guys in these pictures... Other than that, sure, why not...
