    Venezuela creates own time zone

I wasn't sure if this should go in off-topic or what, so feel free to move wherever if need be.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7134927.stm

"Venezuela creates its own unique time zone on Sunday, putting the clock back half-an-hour on a permanent basis.

President Hugo Chavez says that an earlier dawn means the performance of the country will improve, as more people will wake up in daylight.

"I don't care if they call me crazy, the new time will go ahead," he said.

But critics say the move is unnecessary and the president simply wants to be in a different time zone from his arch-rival, the United States.

The new time puts Venezuela four-and-a-half hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, and out of step with all its neighbours.

The move had first been announced in August, but it has been delayed twice because international bodies and Venezuela itself were not ready to implement the change.

Science and Technology Minister Hector Nacarro praised the measure.

"I see it as a very positive thing that while there is light we can be in it," he said.

And President Chavez said earlier this year that schoolchildren would arrive for lessons with more energy as a result of the change.

"These children have to get up at five in the morning... they arrive at school dead tired. And why? Because of our time." "

Chavez should be deposed for his lack of vision.

Anybody hoping to really accomplish anything would have moved the clock back a good 3 hours, so the children could wait at the bus stop in full daylight, with the air warmed by the sun.

Also, since we don't want the sun going down too early, Chavez should have deleted 9 hours during the day - say the hours between 10AM and 7PM. The day in Venezuela starts bright and warm! And the sun is stays up many hours longer than in our imperialist Northern neighbor!

In fact, the hours of the day should have been re-named to reflect the indispensability of the dear leader Chavez to the nation. 1AM would = Chavez is the people's hero, 2AM = Prosperity follows Chavez - and 1/4 hour increments would be indexed on a table where 1/4 = and forever may he reign, 1/2 = and I am glad he's guards our shores, etc. So for example, 8:45PM would be pronounced "Chavez has saved the nation and we are all glad of it!"

He'll never get anywhere with these baby steps.

You've thought long and hard about what you're going to do when you take over the world, haven't you?
