I don't know for sure if I have already posted these pics!? Anyhow, here we go, a destroyed Sherman in the village of wibrin, Belgium. The scrapdealers had started dismantling the destroyed tank after the war, then somebody changed his mind and the carcass was left in place.

What did that destruction to the barrel and why? Was this in a retreat situation?

Could be that possibility judging by the impacts on the side.

She was a M4, or possibly an M4A3(no way to know for sure) 75mm Dry Stowage Made by General Steel, Eddystone Pennsylvania going by the casting mark on the turret bustle. Had a Welded shut pistol port which puts her in the Feb-Apr 43 timeframe
    M34A1 Gun Mount
Applique over Ammo racks, Gunner station, Drivers Hoods
Shows she went through rebuild in UK prior to Normandy by FUSAG MWO
    Intermediate Drivers hoods

The Barrel which is at full recoil was likely destroyed by Engineers putting a TNT block down the bore, typical for non recoverable Armor.

Near Houfflaize so might have been a 3rd Armored Mount.

It says here that it's an A3. Too bad the engine deck is gone. It'd help confirm the variant.

Exactly, also I didnt see any casting marks on the tranny cover or hull front that might have helped ID type. The firewall seems to partially be in place, but is there enough left to id it as an A3 or just a more common M4?

Somebody linked this photo of the Wibrin Sherman to Google Earth.

I liked it better showing her age.

Here is a link to super huge copy of the photo. I found casting numbers on the gun mantlet and on one of the bogie trucks.

190th Fighter Squadron, Blues and Royals friendly fire incident.

In the incident, the two USAF A-10s fired on and destroyed two FV107 Scimitars armored vehicles, killing one and injuring five British soldiers.

Untill I saw these close-ups I was under the impression the Wibrin Sherman was an M4A3 But after seeing them I can say it's efinetely a vanilla M4, the glacis antenna pot casting is the D50986 type only found on Sherman Is.

Most of it is just armor melting in the resulting fire from the looks of it.

Some type of RPG, markings around hole are evident for a HEAT warhead.
