    Default AR-15 Upper

Hey, I am building up my AR-15 piece by piece and have the lower receiver totally finished. I don't feel like buying the upper receiver piece by piece and want to order one already assembled. Can anyone with experience recommend a quality upper receiver in the $600 range. I am looking for one with a "20 barrel and a flat top rail. My lower has a six position collapsible stock, so do you think that will go well with the 20" barrel? I have a 10/30 magazine for it and the allen wrench magazine detachment feature (I live in the People Republic of California).

We're issued C7A2s here (20" upper with a 4-position telescoping stock) and the only thing I noticed different from full stocks (our old C7A1s) is that the weapon gets more front-heavy, especially if you push the stock a bit forward. Otherwise it's good to go and has more to do with personal choice.

The stocks are attached to the Lower receiver on a AR.

There are a number of companies, you can check with Brownells for one. I don't know what the Kaliforny's laws are on bayonet lugs.

I know (especially since I have to inspect and fix them), I didn't mean the uppers came with the stocks on them, just that our C7s have that setup. I guess I could have worded that better.

OK got it, Also he lives in Kaliforny, a adjustable stock could get him jail time. They have weird laws in that state.

Quite indeed. I'm not to familiar with californian gun laws, but I'm aware of the fixed magazines and the many different grips to avoid putting a genuine pistol grip on AR-15s there. I assume one can have a telescoping stock if he has those features?

You can have a semi auto rifle here with a collapsible stock, pistol grip, and all the other components of an assault rifle. The main difference is that if you are going to have all those features, you cannot have a "readily detachable magazine", which basically means you need some sort of tool to detach the mag. The allen wrench set up allows you to set your rifle to have a fixed magazine and be Kalifornia legal when it needs to be, and in less then a minute switched so that the magazine can be inserted and detached like any normal non Kalifornia AR if you ever find yourself in a situation where it was legal to do so. Every time they pass some stupid anti-gun law here, we just find a loophole in it.

I was told that lugs are legal now (the ban expired). I haven't verified it yet, but I still have a lug on my AR. It's been inspected by SWAT members in 2 different counties and they primarily look at the mag/mag well. I use a "bullet button" and haven't been harassed about it, although I know there are some jurisdictions that want the mag epoxied or welded in. Also, most LEO's I've chatted with about Cali-legal AR's say they want a 10-round or less mag. They don't want a modified 30-rounder to only accept 10 rounds. I believe the OP may also have to replace the stock A2 compensator/flash hider/whatever you wanna call it. Pretty lame stuff, but that's what happens when you get people like Boxer and Feinstein making the rules.

Thought that Cali had its own ban like Ct, NY, which meant muzzle brake(not flash hider) no lug, no collapsible stock for post 94 ban lower receivers. I was also aware of the horrible welded magazine thing. Interesting.

There is no way in hell that I am welding or epoxying my mag in.

I also have a pre ban thirty round magazine and two twenty rounders. They are all legal to own, but is it legal to use them in a new rifle?

as long as it's legal in your locale to have a detachable magazine

Here our magazines have to be "non redily detatchable", which means we have to use a tool to take them in and out. So what is the legal difference between locking in a pre ban thirty rounder and a post ban 10 round mag or post ban 10/30 mag to a new AR?
