Machine-gun shaped liquor bottle leads to arrest

EDMONTON -- Edmonton police say they've arrested a 24-year-old suspect after a man pointed what turned out to be a machine gun-shaped liquor bottle at an officer conducting a traffic stop Friday night.
Around 11 p.m., police say a second officer noticed a man in a nearby house pointing what looked like a long barreled gun at the officer doing the traffic stop.
More officers were called in and the home was surrounded.
Several people inside the house eventually surrendered peacefully.
Police then discovered that it wasn't a real weapon that had been pointed at the officer - it was a liquor bottle made in the shape of a gun.
Jessie Shamarchi Petrin, 24, was charged with possession of an imitation weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Wow.....What a retard. It never ceases to amazes me that people seem to never know how to talk to or act around the police.
You point a weapon, even imitation at an officer, he's gonna flip out on you.

I actually find the officer to be more retarded.... and this retardness appears to be the latest fad these days...
How the hell you cant make a difference between a weapon and a glass bottle?!
And why the hell the officer was looking into the windows? isnt thats peeping and invasion of privacy?
Or a campus was on a lockdown because someone saw a guy in a green coat and a bag with a tripod under his arm.... OMG he is in camo and got a weapon! quickly call the SF!...

This paranoia gone too far already...

Shoot everyone who has anything that resembles a gun shaped object then? Do you really wanna open this can of worms?
What if it was a gun made out of lego? or a giant gun shaped cookie? or a wooden stick held as a gun?

I repeat, what gave the officer the right to look into someones house?

Besides im the last person to blame the police, as im all for extra powers for the police to combat crime... but i cannot notice the fact that the police lately began to be less professional in order to bow to various PC pressure groups...

First off, as I understand it, whenever a window is open, the issue of privacy is kind of thrown out the window. In a situation when anyone walking by can look into the window and see a weapon, it doesn't matter if it is inside the house or not. It just happened to be a cop looking in.

I can totally see where the police officer is coming from here. When your job is to deal with tough situations where you can be killed, you will do everything in your power to protect yourself. It's human nature.

Also, when your job is to protect people, why should you not take every precaution necessary to avoid a situation that could possibly result in someone's death. If as an officer if you observe this suspicious individual and do nothing, and something does end up happening, you could most definitely be held responsible for it.

ok big fella... take it easy on the copper.
Police are supposed to be vigilant.. and by doing that they look into windows, down alleys and all that.. what if a violent crime is occuring inside a house and someone is in danger of being killed?
point 2, shilouette: the bottle looks like a weapon, and at a distance, through a window and possibly in poor light it would look like a weapon, it certainly looked like a weapon to a bloke who has it pointed at him cos he took cover and then called in back-up, rather than standing up and having a good hard look, risking his neck. the world has gone a little paranoid, but that cop did the correct thing. you cant knock him for that. he's not paid enough to get shot on the off chance that what looks to be a weapon isnt one...
and with the campus situation, well, not all civvies know what weapons look like from a distance.. some people just dont have alot of sense.

in my line of work, cobber, thats a perfectly legitimate option- if a kid points a weapon at us, we slot the poor little bugger.
if that weapon later turns out to be a woodern toy or a water pistol, thats tragic, but the action taken is legal and necessary in self defence.

Then i should be arrested every time i step out of my place, because i too wear a green coat, and carry a tripod...

Where is the exactly the line between being vigilant and overzealous?
A professional should be able to identify a suspect weapon, both for his safety, the passerbys and the culprits...
after all this is not a warzone...

I cannot disregard the fact that the guy was charged, which is beyond ridiculous...

if you carry a tripod and wear an overcoat you may raise suspicion, and someone might get worried enough to call the cops, they have no right to arrest you unless they believe you are endangering the public. they will come take a look at you to make sure your not dodgy though.

We have had several similar incidents like that here in Oz, not with bottles mind you.
One that springs to mind was a man who was shot and killed by the police at Adelaide University a few years back because he pointed a cigarette shaped lighter at the the police, the police rightfully so got off with justifiable homicide.

I've carried a firearm on a daily basis as part of civilian employment (Not as police) and have had to deal with dickheads just like this guy and let me tell you when you are presented with a threat that resembles a firearm you take it seriously every time, you don't wait to find out if its real or a replica before reacting.
