    Default Self defense for Women.

A great book for men and women is "Armed and Female" by Paxton Quigley.

We all have choices, unless they are taken away from us. Then our choice may be one of being a statistic.

Rule Number 1: If the bad guy(s) is attempting to abduct you and get you into a van etc. Do everything and anything to fight back right then and there. Do not, under any circumstances get in that vehicle. Even if they shoot you where you stand in the parking lot. It's a whole lot better to fight and even die right there. It will pale in comparison to what will happen if they get you somewhere private and can take their time on you.

I have friends who are wary of firearms, recommend any self defense alternatives to them?

I would suggest that book, It is not a firearm only book. It covers situational awareness and other alternatives. I think most serious self defense instructors realize that a firearm is not going to work for everyone. They need to develop a personal defense strategy.

X2. A friend of my best friend was abducted along with her boyfriend out of her driveway here in Houston a few years back. She was raped and shot. He was killed too.

I suggested to my friend that she take a self defense class since they offer them at my college and she does carry a pepper spray, but how effective is pepper spray towards a determined attacker?

I am not a big fan of pepper spray. It works, but not all the time. It is better than nothing and can give you a edge. There is more to personal defense than what you carry.

EZ, My condolences on the lost of your friends.

If the spray is in her bag and gets grabbed from behind....then it's no use, if she spays it into a head wind, no use, a simple rape alarm might be better

My old wing chun instructor was also a former free style full contact chinese martial arts champion, he used to say that although he taught women's self defense courses he didn't recommend them as they were frequently far too short, but if the students at least remembered one technique or some common sense then it was maybe worth it....my opinion common sense goes a long way, some things/situations you cannot prepare for as tragically outlined in the above post but simple things you can do, avoiding situations, being alert and recognising dangers, where to park, where not to walk..etc....but whichever mate, stay safe

    Can I ask what lineage?

Personally, I would suggest taking Krav Maga. From what I have seen it's extremely violent when it needs to be.

d'you mean age?.....turn of speech I'm afraid as it was a few yrs ago when trained under him, guessing he'd be about early-mid 40s now

extremely violent when it needs to be

But, so is a bunch of keys punched into someone's eyes,....but self defense especially for women means avoiding or getting away first and foremost, fighting is the last resort when you feel your life is in danger and anything goes.....also can't speak for other countries and I'm not a lawyer but if an assailant meets 3 characteristics (they are aggressive, advancing towards you, and the catch all "you believe your life to be in danger") then you entitled under law to take pre-emptive action..ie hit them and plead self defense...but very grey area so don't quote me

IŽd pick Krav Maga over Wing Chun any day. Krav Maga is way more natural in its approach of teaching techniques and concepts which I consider to be key when it comes to acting under stress.
I know both styles and I think it takes a lot more time and natural talent of the practioner until Wing Chun is of any use.

    d'you mean age?
There are many Wing Chun sub-styles. The most common one derives from a teacher named Leung Ting.
