Our allies the USA (Go Team) have around Half a Million of these ships lol and I'm sure they would sell one to us but our great leaders in government can't see past their personal retirement plans to realise that we NEED this type of protection. Our greatest threat is Indonesia (Personal opinion) and although we have some ships we have nothing to sustain a long drawn out battle. Our Army Navy & Airforce could really do with an injection of funds to get them up to scratch.

how many Tobruk's are there to be replaced by Canberra's and weren't the RAN given a slap on the wrist for suggesting operating F35b's from these?

and blame the Falklands, if it wasn't for that you'd have Vincy and possibly SHar's and we'd have **** all.

Good point but who can say what our illustrious leaders are thinking, I don't want to get into a slinging match but I still think we need a better representation of our forces (especially Navy). Back to enjoying the pictures.

Canada wanted since 2004 a Amphibius Assault Ship capacity, at $1 Billion each (and planing 2-4).

Nobody know if is a :
    - LPD (Landing Platform Dock)
    - LHA (Landing Helicopter Assault)
    - LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock)

Some sources said canada and Netherland work on the same project called "Amphibious Transport Ships"

The Canadian Amphibious Assault Ship Project is a project designed to give Canada a sealift, mobile command and control platform, amphibious assault capability. The program as envisioned would be a $1,000,000,000 program to purchase an amphibious assault ship that could deploy 1,000 troops. The envisaged ship is projected to be able to provide a helicopter platform. The force, which will include 800 soldiers, sailors and air force personnel, will be mainly focused on maritime operations, but will also focus on areas such as counter-terrorism.
Canada has studied the possibility of having a special force for a year, and sources told Gordon the military is now ready to move ahead with plans. No details were available about when the force will be operational. The program is to complement the Joint Support Ship Project.
Another similar project but a Ro-Ro and LO-LO Dock Landing Ship and AOR, sealift, command. He was called "Joint Support Ship" is a new type of vessels for 21th century. (CANCELED)
    Missions Joint Support Ship

    • EEZ management
    • Out of area operations
    • Joint/international exercises
    • Law enforcement and Naval presence at sea
    • International peace enforcement/peace keeping tasks
    • Evacuation and Humanitarian aid operations
    • Support of a task group

    Tasks Joint Support Ship

    • Replenishment at sea
    • Containment of international crime and terrorism
    • First line hospital treatment
    • Logistic support for the troops ashore (water, food, supplies)
    • Helicopter platform
    • Support of mine countermeasure operations
    • Sea basing operations
    • Transport of troops, rolling equipment and other equipment.
    • Transport of humanitarian goods and equipment
    • Limited joint forces command and control

    The concept

The Joint Support Ship (JSS) concept refl ects the combination of a fl eet tanker and an amphibious transport ship with all the advantages of each combined into one ship. The ship can refuel a task group or provide escorts with necessary spare parts, logistic supplies and fresh water.
In addition, the ship has the ability to support land operations by transporting troops, supplies of goods and rolling material. For joint operations, a very functional sealift capacity is available which includes the transportation and assistance of troops and transport of their material. A staff command and control functionality is incorporated on the top deck. The helicopter deck is designed for dual spot fl ight operations with two heavy land transport helicopters simultaneously.
Maintenance can be executed in the hangar which has a stowage capacity for 4 medium-
sized helicopters. The JSS is completely self-supporting in harbour or at anchor and can
disembark all cargo with its own means to shore, to landing craft or by VERTREP operations.

    Specific Solutions

Because the JSS is a combination of a fl eet tanker and an amphibious transport ship, it is possible to incorporate all specific solutions of the separate types in this ship. Furthermore there are a few specific solutions for this type of ship: one vehicle deck, or one cargo deck or a combination of both. Troop accommodation in different capacities in
combination with cargo and vehicle deck.

The Joint Support Ship isn't a Aircraft Carrier or LHD but is a new type of Helicopter Dock multi-mission who have the capacity of Lo-Lo and Ro-Ro.

It sounds like a good idea but I still think you need planes more than choppers to be an effective deterrent. I know the choppers capabilities and they are a class unto themselves but I think that for long range sorties and such you still need a flight deck.

Some Harrier carrier ops (Harrier fan here...)

Royal Navy's HMS Invincible (R05) (now out of commission) and Sea Harrier FA.2 (also withdrawn from active duty). Best time frame guess, around 2004:

Speaking of Sea Harrier, some historical pics (SHar FRS.1 aboard HMS Ark Royal (R09) circa 1980):

Armada Española (Spanish Navy) EAV-8B Matador II Harriers (AV-8B Harrier II Plus) aboard aircraft carrier Príncipe de Asturias (R11) (night ops):

USMC carrier ops aboard USS Tarawa (LHA-1):

Now that's what I'm talking about - USS Tarawa - All purpose down to earth "KICK ASS"
Even if we only hadone it would be enough. Being a small nation with a realitively small defence budget surely we could afford something like this. At a billion dollars each I think even if we could get a second hand one with low milage, only sailed to Iraq on Sundays.lol

Thanks for posting those photos ChrisBV! Outstanding.

    Great post Hump. Great!!.

I too share you skeptisim about any future RAN LHD. They simply do not have the money or the manning for such a ship. But they honestly need one.

The USN has retired 2 Tarawa class LHAs. One the Belleau Wood was sunk as a target. The other USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) was

decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on April 20, 2007, the SAIPAN was subsequently used for weapons effect testing, providing vital information on structural integrity and survivability assisting in the designing and planning of future ships. After the tests the SAIPAN was transferred to the inactive fleet and is now laid up at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard awaiting final disposal.

USS Tarawa (LHA 1) is expected to decommission March 31, 2009 in San Diego, Ca. The date of the decommissioning ceremony is Sunset, December 4, 2008. Maybe our allies from OZ may purchase this ship. Trouble is the last carrier the USN sold to another nation was about 50 years ago.

On another note LPDs LSDs are great ships but not CVs. The USN has 10 LPDs, And is building 5 to replace the older ships. Plus 13 LSDs. But I won't post pictures of them. They are not aircraft carriers. Just my opinion.

    Thanks Popeye,
maybe when she pays off the Oz government might be able to do a lease deal, it's such a waste to see these ships sent out for target practice or even sold for razor blades when they have out lived their usefulness for the U.S. navy. It would be an interesting situation and bring Australia and the U.S. even closer together. I did Rimpac 75 on the melbourne, it was a great time. I will keep my fingers crossed, maybe one day in my lifetime we might see another "Flat Top" in the R.A.N. Till then we will probably just have to shake a Big Stick and yell loudly maybe that will scare them off.

This is the F35B along the same idea as a Harrier, have a look at the rear propulsion tube, it looks like a giant vacuum cleaner. Also has a pop top for the centre lift.

My best guess is that they are sea trials, as I have not yet found record of Sea Harriers as part of Ark Royal's air wing up to her decommissioning in 1978. Here's another one (Harrier GR.1), advertised as "sea trials aboard Ark Royal":

I believe they are from Ark Royal but giving them a second look, I think they could also be from HMS Hermes (R12). Might have to re-check that out
