Tora, In the next 10 years or so how do you see the JMSDF "DDH" ships shaping up? How many? and >>> Do you think they will ever have JSF F-35B on board for operations? Or a ski ramp fitted.
This is a drawing of the 22DDH

Well, Japan's MoD by the end of the year will publish the next middle term defense white paper (5 years, 2010-2014), they will probably gave an overall view of the defense developments.
I think by 2020 number will be four, two Hyuga Class and two 22DDH.
Previously there were rumours of up to 4 Hyuga to be built, then probably a mistake or a shift of strategies by the MoD, two 14.000 and two 20.000 tons it's probably the most effective choice.
As it has been in the past the DDH always numbered in 4 units, the two Hyuga have been built for replace the two Kurama while the 22DDH for replace the two Shirane, so probably no more than four will be built.
The fleet will probably not go under drastic changes, older vessels will be decommissioned while newer classes will enter in service the number of destroyers seems will remain almost unchanged, same to be said for the submarine fleet wich will remain of 16 units.
Instead seems changes will involve the structure of the fleet and it's formations.
Considering regional developments is clear no one here will just sit and watch, Japan is interested on both the Typhoon and the JSF.
I hope Japan for it's F-X will not buy the F-35 right now as it is not extremely needed, but of course it could be very useful at the end of the next decade with the introduction of bigger vessels.
Thanks Tora. Post updates and photos as you find them!
Now that we are on the subject, let's have a visual comparison.
(I didn't make this, I don't know who did.)
btw, it is speculated that SeaRAM CIWS will be mounted.

In the first informations published by Japan's MoD the armament cited consists of two CIWS and two air defense systems.
If you look at that image you posted we can find four CIWS, two positioned on the ship's rear flanks, another one positioned in front of the island deck and one more situated forward on the left of the flight deck.
It is rumoured RAM could be installed, then it could perhaps consist of two CIWS and two RAM CIWS.
Looking at the image VLS are not visible therefore no medium-long range air defense/ASW.
If that is then seems they choosed a heavier armament for the two smaller ones (Hyuga Class) and a lighter armament for the two bigger ones.
Just to clarify, I meant SeaRAM not RAM. So my guess is 2x Phalanx and 2x SeaRAM will be installed.
Here's a datasheet: http://www.raytheon.com/capabilities..._datasheet.pdf
Indeed no VLS cells, to be honest they are not exactly at home on a carrier, that's why you have air defence escorts.
Thanks Ej, Kuddos on the pictures you posted mate, excellent, can't wait till your next post.
Hump
