Something new and different I thought I would post. They are technically aircraft carriers, and planes did operated off of them. These two were the USS Akron and USS Macon both owned and operated by the United States Navy:

The Macon's bi-plane is preserved in a meseum:

^ Ah yeah. Good call. IIRC they just found one of them on the bottom of the Pacific.

Some reason or another I like those airship PIX. Those things were death traps.... Twice in my Navy career I was stationed at NATTC Lakehurst NJ for short periods of time for instruction. As far as I know the airship hangars are still there. Those things are huge. There were also airship hangars at NAS Moffet Field in San Jose CA and a base the USMC used in Orange county CA. I forget the name.

Great job by all posting PIX in this thread!

    ivan_shermagone sez it's MCAS Tustin..

Thanks I should know that..I had a good Marine friend that was stationed there. And I drove to LA so many times from San Diego..You have to pass Tustin..jeez wadda dope....All those helos and F-18s that were at Tustin and El Toro are now at MCAS Miramar in San Diego..which once was NAS Miramar..

I do remember this..The majority of the structure of those hangars is made of wood. Why? Built during WWII it was a cost saving measure and to conserve steel for the war effort.

Sad to see Tustin going to wrack & ruin like that ^^^.
I was at El Toro for a couple months after boot, for ASOP with MAG-13, and it was still an active base (1984).
We used to hear stories (true or not?) of helo pilots flying through those hangers, one end to the other.

I guess I need to get back on topic, and find some carriers that haven't already been posted now.

    Default Ghost Ship..

Some more of the USS Hornet, CV-12 (Essex Class):

    Launching, Newport News, 1943:

    Eniwetok, 1944.
The ceremony on deck was for Adm. Marc Mitscher to honor the sailors efforts in the Marianas:

Typhoon, June, 1945. Hornet lost 25ft of her flight deck.
Unable to safely launch from the bow, the ship actualy backed into the wind, and launched from the stern!!!!!:

    Typhoon damage to the bow:

Avenger, tossed onto a Hellcat during typhoon:

The Hornet is now a museum ship, moored at Alameda, and is said to be "the most haunted" ship in the US Navy. Dozens of visitors each year report experiencing everything from spooky noises and "cold spots", to seeing actual apparitions of long dead sailors.
    Who knows???: http://www.uss-hornet.org/

For bd_popeye, and all others who served aboard her: One last look at the USS John F Kennedy CV-67.

    1968-2007. Thanks for the memories!

None of these pics had individual captions with date, etc., and I'm curious about this one. The Intruders in the forground are from my squadron (VMA(AW)-533), but I don't recall ever seeing any EA-3B "Queer Whales" (white plane behind the A-6's) aboard. The VF-14 Tomcats to the left also have full-color markings on the tails.
It must pre-date my service by a few years:

Another aircraft not normally launched from shipboard, the OV-10, onboard the Nassau.
