Here's a few more from the ESSEX archives. Quality not the best but they are photos of photos.

The first three are a series. I think I posted the first one before but it fits the series.

A TBM returning from the battle of the Phillipine Sea with a damage landing gear.

The TBM hits the deck, but does not flip or burn.

The flight deck crew rushes out to get the flight crew out of the plane. No one was unjured.

A bomb explodes just off the stern of ESSEX during the first battle of the Phillipine Sea, June 1944.

A F6F Hellcat ready for catapult take off from ESSEX, WWII

A TBM just launched from ESSEX, WWII.

ESSEX fire crews work on fire from F4U that crashed into planes forward while landing.

ESSEX crew works loading aircraft magazines with 50 caliber ammo for aircraft. WWII

For Hump - this shows the bomb cart that was previously loaded in the hangar bay.
ESSEX crew works loading bombs from carts to an aircraft. WWII

One from the 50's or 60's.
ESSEX CV9 or CVS9 being fueled by ALLAGASH AO-97, with Destroyer USS FISKE DD-842 on the other side.

    Thats all for now

Nope..That cat is on the bow. It's hydraulic. The USN did away with hydraulic cats after an unfortunate catapult explosion on board the USS Bennington CV-20 on 26 April 1954 which killed 103 shipmates and injured 201.

On 26 May 1954, while cruising off Narragansett Bay, the fluid in one of her catapults exploded setting off a series of secondary explosions which killed 103 crewmen and injured 201 others. Bennington proceeded under her own power to Quonset Point, R. I., to land her injured.

Nope. That was the forward stbd cat. Essex was actually commissioned with NO cats, as there were none available. The track was installed before commissioning and one forward Stbd cat, an H4B, was installed, in that track, just stbd of the forward Deck elevator, after her sea trials. The hangar bay athwartships cat that was installed on #10 thru #15, was never installed. She was also originally set up to retrieve aircraft from the bow with arresting gear - removed in 1944. Her first and only wartime refit was in April 1944, when she got her second H4B cat. During SCB-27A refit in the 50's, these were replaced with H-8 hydraulic cats capable of launching jet aircraft. She had these when I was aboard in the sixties and kept the hydraulic cats until decommissioning in 1969.

PS - Didn't see your post Popeye, I must have been researching for mine.

    Thanks Popeye, EJ. Very informative.

Does anyone have any photos/info on the stern catapults used in WWII carriers?
