    Default AJ-1/2 Savage

Settling easily on the deck of the USS Coral Sea (CV-43), the Navy North American Aviation AJ-1 large attack bomber is the heaviest airplane ever to land on a carrier. Navy pilots from Composite Squadron Five (VC-5) in Aug 1950 completed landings and take offs with AJ-1's in carrier operations off the Atlantic Coast. Each weighing over seventeen (17) tons, the AJ-1's are powered by one jet and two piston engines, and have a top speed of over 350 miles an hour. The AJ-1 Savage with two turning and one burning was the only carrier based aircraft capable of delivering nuclear warheads. This VC-5 aircraft piloted by LCDR Don Runyon is shown during carrier qualifications on USS Coral Sea. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

An AJ-2 Savage leaves the flight deck of the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) from a free deck launch. The plane is from Heavy Attack Squadron Eleven (VAH-11) which was redesignated from Composite Squadron Eight (VC-8) on 1Nov 1955. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

First landing made by an AJ-1 Savage on board the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) piloted by CDR J. J. EManski Jr., Heavy Atack Squadron Eleven (VAH-11) stationed at Naval Auxiallary Air Station (NAAS) Sanford, FL. The squadron was redesignated from Composite Squaron Eight (VC-8) on 1 Nov 1955. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

1956 - Tailhooks from an AJ-1 Savage are shown. One of the tailhooks has been damaged from a crash aboard the USS Coral Sea.

Aboard USS Midway (CV-41) with Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. North American AJ-2 Savage from Composite Squadron Seven (VC-7) , Navy's most powerful carrier aircraft of its day, is launched from USS Midway during NATO operation Shield One. The huge bomber tested aerial defenses of major Mediterranean coastal cities. McDonnell F2H-3 twin-jet Panshee from Fighter Squadron Thirty-One (VF-31) awaits launch from starboard catapult. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

McDonnell F2H-4 of Carrier Group Ten (CVG-10), Fighter Squadron Eleven (VF-11), being refueled by a North American AJ-2 Savage of Composite Squadron Eight (VC-8), redesignated Heavy Attack Squadron Eleven (VAH-11) 1 Nov 1955. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

1950 - An AJ-1 Savage of Composite Squadron (VC) 5 pictured on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Coral Sea (CVB 43). On April 21, 1950, Captain John T. Hayward demonstrated the shipboard capabilities of the AJ-1, the first naval aircaft designed specifically to deliver atomic weapons, by successfully launching from Coral Sea. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

1950 - An AJ-1 Savage of Composite Squadron (VC) 5 launches from the deck of the aircraft carrier Coral Sea (CVB 43), which on April 21, 1950, was the scene of the first successful carrier launch of the airplane. The AJ-1 was the first Navy plane designed specifically to deliver nuclear weapons. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

circa 1954 - View of the carrier Coral Sea (CVA 43) underway in the Mediterranean with AJ Savage heavy attack aircraft visible on the aft part of the flight deck. Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

AJ of Heavy Attack Squadron Six (VAH-6) landing on the deck of CV-20 (USS Bennington). Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

AJ-2 of Heavy Attack Squadron Six (VAH-6) and AD of Composite Squadron Thirty-Five (VC-35) on the deck of CVA-10 (USS Yorktown). Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

AJ-1 of North American Aviation (NAA). Robert L. Lawson Photograph Collection.

Hi guys, RAY in Canada is back....first and other pages are loaded with pics but why the little boxes witn ? marks in them...do I have to click on something to get these to open up and load.....anyone?

THEY look okay I can understand the need for change, but now that negates the beautifull and collectable navy blue ballcaps with gold ship letter named on the front....caps that i have a few hundred now and make wonderfull collectors items. Now you can walk down Norfolk streets and piers look at a sailor and never know what ship they are attached to , it was always nice to see that. Disappointed, but thats life.
