What great pics. I'm impressed and in awe of these new ships. I served on USS ESSEX CVS9 "The Oldest and The Boldest" in the early sixties. I'm proud of that boat. I'll have to dig out my picks and learn how to post them. Keep up the good work.

    Follks,

Below is an idea that the US Navy considered in the early 1930s. They were called "Flight Deck Cruisers" and they were designed for two basic roles: 1> For the role of what is basically un-PC today "colonial cruiser" and 2> to hunt surface raiders down or be a surface raider during a general war 3> to hunt down and destroy enemy destroy flotillas . In either role they were designed to operate independently with the exception of the first role/mission. They were based on the light cruiser designs (having rapid fire 6 inch cannons) of those days which were limited by the Washington Power Treaty of 1921. Below is an artist rendering of what one would have looked like complete with a Boeing fighter-bomber.

Finally, as strange as it will sound, the US Navy considered such a concept with the mothballed Iowa class battleships -- ie they would have Harriers and helicopters and a skip-ramp deck located where the aft 16 inch turret was located. The Japanese did convert one battleship to such a design which would have carried float planes.

    Dear Member,

There would have been on elevator located on the deck next to where the folding smoke stacks are. There were also drawings with a larger deck and just one turret mounting three 6 inch cannons instead of three turrets mounting nine 6 inch cannons.

This evolution happens when those navies are operating with the USN. Which honestly is not that often.
